The paper presents an attempt to identify methodological problems in the research into the processes of globalization. Originally globalization was treated as a homogeneous process, leaving its impress on the ground of economic and social sciences. Later, however, scientists realized that globalization triggers a lot of processes, part of which are known, but many of which we are not aware of. In this context, it is more proper to write and talk not about globalization but about the processes of globalization. The author understands the processes of globalization as a whole of the processes which occur on the social- economic and political plane. The processes lighten mutual connections between countries, regions or single people, and their consequences. According to the author, the main problems in the research into processes of globalization are: problems with defining the subject of research, lack of proper methodology and methods of research, interdisciplinary problems and problems with objectivity of facts. The selection of proper research methods to conduct the research into the processes of globalization poses a lot of difficulties. They result from the fact that geography has worked out a lot of detailed research methods, used to describe quantitative phenomena, which are the essence of globalization, using qualitative methods. At this stage of research, the essence of globalization can be captured by using systematic approach in an idiographic sense.

It is necessary to create new knowledge for the development of the economy. The source of new knowledge are research: basic, applied and industrial, which complement each other to form one whole. Each of these research has other sources of financing and other purposes. Due to the large influx of foreign technology to Poland industrial research is not growing as we would expect. To balance this deficiency the Research Institutes may provide services on the world market. It would be advisable to seek the provision of services on the global research market so that it could became a Polish smart specialization. This specialization would include the sale of intellect, which should never run out of customers.
Dla rozwoju gospodarki niezbędne jest tworzenie nowej wiedzy. Źródłem nowej wiedzy są badania: podstawowe, stosowane i przemysłowe, które wzajemnie się uzupełniają tworząc jedną całość. Każde z tych badań ma inne źródła finansowania oraz inne cele. W związku ze znacznym napływem do Polski zagranicznych technologii badania przemysłowe nie rozwijają się tak jak można by oczekiwać. Dla zrównoważenia tego niedoboru może być świadczenie przez instytuty badawcze, usług na rynku światowym. Byłoby celowym podjęcie starań świadczenia usług na światowym rynku badań tak by stało się to polską inteligentną specjalizacją. Specjalizacja ta obejmowałaby sprzedaż intelektu, na który nigdy nie powinno zabraknąć klientów.

Economic transformation processes in Poland, taking effect under the influence of advancing globalization, trigger extensive changes in the functioning of particular sectors of the national economy, industrial and service enterprises, and institutions. As a result, industrial structures are rebuilt, which is due to changes in functioning of industrial enterprises regarded as the basic elements of the spatial forms of industry concentration. These changes condition the participation of the national industrial enterprises in the global economic processes, and the integration of the Polish industry with the global industry, especially through forming organizational, financial, and technological bonds, and through entering the already-formed market networks of international corporations. Therefore, from the point of view of the analysis of the economic transformation process in Poland, and especially transformation of industrial structures, the research area of functioning of enterprises, which is the focus of this paper, seems an important issue. In the first part, the author makes an attempt at showing differences between approaches to research problems concerning functioning of enterprises in geographical and economic sciences, and points to the necessity that researchers pay special attention to the conditioning of changes in functioning of enterprises and the sources of financial means for the restructuring. Further, the author presents a modernized questionnaire investigating functioning of an industrial enterprise, outlines the criteria of selection of enterprises for the research, and discusses the range of analysis of changes in enterprises functioning basing on results achieved from empirical studies conducted in south-east Poland. The paper is concluded with a discussion of access to data, and data quality evaluation. These considerations appear to prove the validity and significance of the undertaken research problems concerning changes in enterprise functioning, to show advantages of a comprehensive approach to this problem area, which includes all important aspects of enterprise functioning, and to point out to the necessity of more extensive inclusion of economic issues in research work conducted in the field of industrial geography, as processes of change are not a goal, but a means that should lead to an increase in efficiency and competitiveness of an enterprise, expressed by economic indexes.

In the development of every field of science, we observe a sequence of stages connected with more and more precise perception of the research area, resulting from making new hypotheses, setting new goals, and perfecting the research methodology. These stages are reflected in the gradual transition from descriptions of the object of research and explanations of its formation processes to the creation of models and construction of theories. Thus, a need emerges to take up efforts to create the theory of industrial geography. It results not only from the willingness to intensify the elementary research, but also from social demands that use the results of scientific research in practical application, e.g. in building developmental strategies for national, regional, or local systems. Basing on the above assumptions, the author of this paper attempts at determining selected research problems in industrial spatial structure. The presented idea refers to the general assumptions of scientific methodology and the theory of systems, to a series of theoretical works that focus on building the theory of geography, to the basics of building the theory of industrial geography, and to numerous empirical studies. The research problem area outlined in the paper is not exhaustive, as it does not include all issues vital in theory development and empirical studies in the field of industrial geography. Its further development should be oriented at explaining and evaluating diversities observed in the industrial spatial structure, but also at proposing rational directions of its further transformation. It seems that adopting this line of development will make industrial geography more competitive in comparison to other fields of science, and will enable the realization of practical application goals.

Globalization as the drive of socio-economic and political transformations shapes the new order of the modern world. The imperative of constant economic growth forces the search for new sources of optimization of industrial activity, e.g. through extensive division of labour, searching for cheap labour, specialization of activity, tightening the bonds between particular sectors of the national economy, using new technological achievements and new organizational solutions (production fragmentation), and political activity (systematic reduction of barriers in goods, services and capital global flow). Globalization also causes far-reaching changes in the functioning of industry. As a consequence, the object of research in industrial geography changes, as well as the theme- and research range of industrial structures (systems). Traditionally the analysis of structural systems was conducted on the planes of: divisions (branches), ownership, size, and space. In the globalization era, as a result of strong influence of science and technology on industry, especially in organizational, technological, but also logistic spheres, individuation of each of the above-mentioned structures becomes highly problematic. In the light of the above, the author of the present paper examines the applicability of the spatial auto-corellation analysis in identification of patterns of spatial dependencies and spatial heterogeneity of industrial activity, on the example of the Kujawsko-pomorskie voivodship. The main assumption of auto-corellation analysis is based on the claim that the intensity of phenomena in a spatial unit depends on their level in neighbouring units. Experimental analysis of auto-corellative dependencies with respect to the industrial activity development and spatial influence of this activity seems to be a helpful method in identifying industrial spatial structures. It enables determination of patterns of spatial heterogeneity and other patterns of spatial dependencies. Using this method enables to diagnose a low degree of spatial dependency of units with respect to industrial development, and to notice the tendency of polarization of the industrial activity distribution.

Currently, there are many premises which invite a debate on the role and position of the geography of industry among geographic sciences, and – possibly above all – among the sciences researching the economic processes, especially those focusing on economic structures. It should be emphasized that, owing to the research subject, the scale of the research itself and the methodological framework, there is strong resemblance between geography of industry and economy of industry. There is, however, serious divergence of perception of both sciences by the society and the scientists themselves. Meanwhile, geography of science, if widely underrated, can offer a range of research possibilities very similar to that of economy of science. What it lacks is a certain fresh perspective and its own – not adopted – research methods. Thus, the future of the geography of science seems uncertain, because maintaining the status quo means the state of temporariness, and in a larger perspective – its scientific non-existence. There is a possibility, however, that consolidation of geographic sub-branches might occur under the name of economic geography. As a consequence, economic geography will be accepted as a legitimate science in the area of economic research.

This paper discusses the phenomenon of alkali reactivity of aggregates. The types, mechanism and symptoms of alkali-aggregate reaction are discussed. A potentially reactive minerals and rocks are listed. The methodology for alkali reactivity identifying is discussed. The current state of testing rules for alkali reactivity in Poland is presented.
