Opis:
The article discusses the problem of the avant-garde in Croatian poetry during the second half of 20th century. It supports the thesis about the continuity of the avant-garde before and after World War II, and perceives the artistic and literary experiments of the neo and post-avant-garde as a part of a long avant-garde tradition. The analysis brings forward the different perceptions of avant-garde in the works of Radovan Ivšić and Josip Sever, and post-avant-garde poets of 1970s and 80s.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to discuss the crucial difference between the notions of ‘avant-garde’ (from Lyotard’s or Danto’s essays) and Perloff’s or Bolecki’s ‘modernism’ and to suggest a new, exclusive rather than inclusive, approach to literary studies, based on the experimental theory and poetics of Surrealism. This so-called “surrealist attitude” could be applied in the literary and cultural studies as a twofold paradigm: on the one hand, it focuses on the verbal or textual aspect of the avant-garde experiments (utilizing Bürger’s or Barthes’ theories), on the other hand, it gives an opportunity to acknowledge their anthropological or sociological character marked by Baudrillard, Danto, Foster, or Krajewski. In this perspective, the substantial process of abandonment of reality (Lyotard), which stands for the dominant element of the avant-garde aesthetics, could be connected with the crisis of represetation and with the binary nature of the objects (simultaneously, the textual/internal and contextual/exteral forms).

Opis:
The article aims to highlight the most important rhetorical strategies used by some avant-garde poets to write about the social problems of the Second Polish Republic. The author shows that the references to religious language appearing at the turn of the 1920s in the works of avant-garde poets served the purposes of persuasion: to evoke emotions (such as ira, timor, despectio), to visually comment on the socio-political situation after the May events and the economic crisis, and finally to express anxiety over the specter of imminent crisis. When discussing selected works by Julian Przyboś, Anatol Stern, Bruno Jasieński, and Jalu Kurek, the author focuses on rhetorical means and figures taken from religious discourse by constructivist poets and former futurists. This article contributes to the post-secular considerations and rhetorical analyses of contemporary Polish poetry, shedding new light on the influence of biblicisms and religious language on the socially engaged avant-garde poetry.

Opis:
The poetry of Joan Brossa (1919-1998), because of its complexity and size, testifies the adventures that has lived the Western literature in the second half of the twentieth century: from the depletion of traditional avant-gardes, going through the movements of neo- or transavantgarde, up to the manifestos of the “literature of exhaustion” or postmodern. The present study aims to discuss the collection of seven volumes of poetry of Joan Brossa, written between 1969 and 1975, and published between 1983 and 1989 under the general title "Els entra-i-surts del poeta", which we consider as one of the most consistent editorial and lyrical author’s projects. We put emphasis on the issue of continuation / break up between the modernist concepts of language and the postmodern plurality, treatment of reality as text or writing, free play of imagination: all this not as a picture of disintegrated world but as positive reflection of a polymorphic reality.

The author presents a glossary for Wanda Melcer-Rutkowska’s biography, which draws on her social and literary activity in the context of cultural trans-formations at the beginning of the 20th century. Moreover, the author clearly outlines Melcer Rutkowska’s active engagement in a variety of initiatives intended to revolutionise the realm of customs and art. The article draws on the literary output of the author of Miasto zwierząt, indicating the impact it had during the interwar years. Special attention is paid to the forgotten poetry which was eventually included in a compilation of previously printed volumes and those poems which had been formally scattered throughout the press. Two aspects of Melcer-Rutkowska’s literary work were primarily analysed: feministic and avant-garde.

Ewa Maria GoczałThe Faculty of PhilologyPedagogical University of Cracow  Exits: Avant-gardisation as an Incentive to Canonization (the Case of Różewicz the Poet) Abstract: The article aims at determining the specificity of canonical character of the poetry of Tadeusz Różewicz – one of the most important writers of the Polish literature of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century, whose just recently finished work – although there are already numerous studies – is only now subjected to all-embracing summaries. The discussion has been submitted to the concept of continual canonization which corresponds with the diagnosis of multiplicity and dynamism of modern canons as well as conforms with, the basic to the author of Faces of Anxiety, the movement of transgression – constant avant-gardisation, going beyond individual and non-individual norms and established models. The study is divided into four parts corresponding with four aspects of Różewicz's excesses. The first one is a general description of the postulated category of canonical character in the context of the work of the author of Exit; the second one describes a type of avant-garde specific to the author; the third one concerns negative poetics. The fourth part sums up the issue by discussing the newest selection of Różewicz's poetry – Znikanie [Disappearance] edited and commented by Jacek Gutorow, poet and literature scholar. The problem of paradoxical continuation based on variability, poetic tradition, and the strategy of external canonization of the writer will be discussed – through the creation of a new canon of his poems which will be potential, alternative, personal and explicitly submitted to the subject of the sense of writing and the autotelic nature of poetry.Keywords: avant-garde, canon, contemporary poetry

Opis:
The article examines the relation between Tuwim’s poetry and modern colloquial language. The avant-garde artists for whom in the beginning of the 20th-century art was an elite occupation, treated every-day speech as a mass form of communication. Tuwim’s poetry was frequently criticised for banality. Matywiecki presents the poet as a hero fighting with the demon of commonness. The crucial thesis of the article is that banality which is modified in a creative way says more about the epoch than elitist visions. In his poetry, satire and cabaret work Tuwim transformed triviality into dialog and a common human being into a creative person. Transition of the street talk into original speech is the defence against reducing individual being to cliché which means the fear of 20th-century killing ideologies.

Opis:
The aim of this article was to present a comparative interpretation of the selected poems by Tymoteusz Karpowicz (the poem alfaŚWIATŁOWSTĄPIENIE and a few accompanying poems) and Ezra Pound (The Cantos: LXXX, LXXXI and LXXXIII). The texts have been selected because of the theme of light, sun and visual perception. The comparative method is supposed to show 20th-century Polish poetry in the context of Anglo-American modernism. The relationship between the two poets seems to be hypothetical and one-sided. It has not been established so far whether the writings of Karpowicz were inspired by Pound’s texts. Thus, the article realized a model of contactless, comparative literary study, where comparisons are made on the basis of a typologic relationship. The first part of the article presented the theme of light in some non-poetic texts by Karpowicz and Pound and in their conception of art. The next two parts focus on the interpretation of poetry. The last chapter contained the conclusions drawn from the comparative analysis of chosen texts. The motif of light became not only a link between the selected poems, but also a reason for the comparison of the poetical techniques, specificity of style and the functions of linguistic experiments. The philosophical, Biblical, literary and even scientific contexts were evoked. A theoretical background was represented by the notion of reading/interpretation by Wolfgang Iser, transtextuality by Gérard Genette and the category of a model reader by Umberto Eco. The literary projects of Karpowicz and Pound impel readers to consider several issues. The most significant are: the limits of interpretation, obscurity or inexplicability of modern poetry and the problems of literary communication.
