    Opis:
    The successively introduced legal regulations as well as social changes make it possible for people with visual impairments to live a more independent life, which also includes participation in culture. As a result, a reflection arises: What can be done to ensure better access to museums and their resources to people with visual impairments? POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews has developed a programme and implemented a series of activities that allow diverse groups of visitors to get to know its exhibitions and participate in events. Among solutions dedicated to the visually impaired one will find typhlographs and audio descriptions for the exhibits as well as educational walks and workshops with employees trained to work with visitors with disabilities and adapt the museum space to let them move around it independently. This article focuses on activities that engage people with visual impairments – a population that faces the greatest barriers in terms of access to visual arts, who, however, is being increasingly included in visual arts events. Such activities give the visually impaired the opportunity to participate in situations previously inaccessible to them, breaking down barriers between different social groups.

    Opis:
    Audio description, i.e. verbal description of images and visual content, enables people with visual impairments to have wider and more adequate perception of a film, theater and fine arts. Audio description through short, precise and objective descriptions of the scenes enables visually impaired viewers to interpret the visual content themselves, allows to follow the developing plot of the story and to hear and understand what is happening on the screen. In film and television presentations, audio description takes the form of an additional soundtrack slipped in between portions of dialogues. This is a supportive technique and it does not replace the ability of blind and visually impaired people to make their own observations. It helps to develop the imagination of blind people, facilitates understanding of art, participation in cultural and social life. Creating a good audio description is an immensely difficult, time-consuming and expensive undertaking. Despite the large variety of needs, expectations and the life experiences of audio description recipients, it is necessary to set universal standards and principles for creating a description to optimize the perception of art despite sensory difficulties. Audio description is a great value and chance for the blind, for it enriches the process of verbal compensation, the essence of which consists in a greater use of the cognitive function of speech.
    Audiodeskrypcja, czyli słowny opis obrazów i treści wizualnych, umożliwia osobom z niepełnosprawnością wzroku pełniejszą i bardziej adekwatną percepcję sztuki filmowej, teatralnej, plastycznej. Audiodeskrypcja poprzez krótkie, precyzyjne i obiektywne opisy scen umożliwia widzom z niepełnosprawnością wzroku samodzielną interpretację treści wizualnych, pozwala podążać za rozwijającym się wątkiem historii oraz usłyszeć i zrozumieć, co dzieje się na ekranie. W filmie, audycjach telewizyjnych audiodeskrypcja przybiera postać dodatkowej ścieżki dźwiękowej umieszczanej między dialogami. Jest to technika wspomagająca. Nie zastępuje ona umiejętności obserwacji osób niewidomych i słabowidzących. Pomaga rozwijać wyobraźnię osób niewidomych, ułatwia rozumienie przekazu sztuki, pozwala na udział w życiu kulturalnym i społecznym. Tworzenie dobrej audiodeskrypcji jest niezmiernie trudnym, czasochłonnym i kosztownym przedsięwzięciem. Mimo dużej różnorodności potrzeb, oczekiwań oraz posiadanych doświadczeń życiowych odbiorców audiodeskrypcji konieczne jest wyznaczenie obowiązujących uniwersalnych standardów i zasad tworzenia opisu, aby optymalizować percepcję sztuki mimo utrudnień sensorycznych. Audiodeskrypcja jest dużą wartością i szansą dla niewidomych, gdyż wzbogaca proces kompensacji werbalnej, której istota polega na większym wykorzystaniu poznawczej funkcji mowy.

    Opis:
    People with visual impairments have become regular guests of the National Museum in Warsaw in recent years. For us, museum professionals, this has been the time of discovering new ways to present works of art. This article discusses possibilities offered by art workshops that do not refer to participants’ visual perception. Without sight, which of the other senses becomes the transmitter of the aesthetic, emotional, and symbolic content of the works? What can you do when the original work of art cannot be touched? Are typhlographics, tactile drawings of paintings, always necessary? The text tries to provide answers to these questions. Its theses are based on the experience from the preparing and conducting of workshops for people with visual impairments. The study also shows the impact that meetings with the visually impaired audiences have on the Museum’s employees, building their awareness of visitors’ needs and expectations.

    Opis:
    This article presents accessibility challenges faced by cultural institutions in the case of visually impaired visitors. The paper starts by highlighting the perception differences in people who are blind from birth, people who lost their eyesight but were once sensitive to visual stimuli, and people with partial vision loss, and consequently, the differences in the preparation of audio description narratives. Outlining the latter in terms of challenges related to the exhibition content (audio descriptions at exhibitions with and without facilities for the visually impaired) and navigation (extremely diversified needs in various groups of visually impaired visitors), the author argues that audio description cannot be the only solution implemented by cultural institutions, although this is often the case. Without undermining the necessity, relevance, and the educational and informational value of the verbal description of visual content, she emphasises the need for other solutions and a greater open-mindedness to the diversity of this extremely heterogeneous group of visitors. Such an approach is crucial while the solutions dedicated to the visually impaired can prove beneficial for all visitors.

    Opis:
    Theoretical and search considerations, and tyflopedagogic practice above all, make us see the culture of people with visual disabilities as an important way of educational and rehabilitation activities implemented in the spirit of inclusion, i.e. social inclusion in important communication links whose one of the areas is culture. Based on a descriptive and critical analysis of small literature on the subject, as well as participant observation and personal experience of the author, the subject of the specific nature of the reception of works of culture by people with visual disabilities and the conditions and possibilities of nonvisual ways of sharing them have been considered. Tactile and auditory ways of providing visual arts: Braille system, typhlography and audio description have been presented as corresponding to the specificity of cognitive processes of visually impaired people. The importance of the Internet for participation in the culture of visually impaired people has been marked, recalling selected exemplifications. Based on the considerations undertaken, the postulates of practical and research actions have been drawn up in the field of interdisciplinary issues of inclusive participation in the culture of people with visual disabilities.
    Rozważania teoretycznobadawcze, a nade wszystko praktyka tyflopedagogiczna, każą upatrywać w partycypacji w kulturze osób z niepełnosprawnością wzroku ważnego kierunku oddziaływań edukacyjnych i rehabilitacyjnych, realizowanych w duchu inkluzji, czyli włączenia społecznego w istotne powiązania komunikacyjne, których kultura jest jednym z obszarów. Na podstawie analizy opisowokrytycznej nielicznej literatury przedmiotu, obserwacji uczestniczącej i osobistych doświadczeń autorki poddano refleksji problematykę specyfiki odbioru wytworów kultury przez osoby z niepełnosprawnością wzroku oraz uwarunkowań i możliwości ich pozawzrokowego udostępniania. Przedstawiono – odpowiadające specyfice procesów poznawczych osób niepełnosprawnych wzrokowo – dotykowosłuchowe sposoby udostępniania sztuk wizualnych: system Braille’a, tyflografikę i audiodeskrypcję. Zwrócono uwagę na znaczenie Internetu dla partycypacji w kulturze osób niepełnosprawnych wzrokowo, przywołując wybrane egzemplifikacje. Na podstawie podjętych rozważań, wyprowadzono postulaty działań praktycznych i badawczych w zakresie interdyscyplinarnej problematyki inkluzywnego uczestniczenia w kulturze osób z niepełnosprawnością wzroku.
