    This article presents the role of architecture in the process of making the landscape of the Western and Northern Territories of Poland in the late 1940s more familiar to new inhabitants. The topic is analyzed on the example of Wroclaw city guidebook from 1948 by St[anislaw] Sevatt. In his work, special focus was given to gothic churches in order to emphasize close relations between Silesia and the other regions of Poland in the time of the Piast dynasty.

    The end of the Second World War and subsequent change of European borders were important demarcation lines in the history of many cities. That was also the case of Opole – a city that had been a part of Germany until 1945, became incorporated into Poland, co-creating so-called „Recovered Territories”. New Polish authorities had to rebuilt the city destroyed by war’s aftermath, discover and understand it, as well as create new narratives about Opole as an indigenously Polish city, brought back to its „Motherland” after Second World War. The city’s post-war identity was to be based on changed interpretations of preexisting heritage (such as architecture) as well as certain events in Opole’s post-war history. The aim of those actions was to create a brand new identity, alligned with the politics and propaganda of that period, and to foster the proccess of acclimating new inhabitants with the city. The issues relating to Opole’s post-war architectural and urban development have not yet been researched by art and architecture historians. The aim of the chapter called The case of a city „in-between”: architecture and urban planning during first postwar years is to fill this gap by presenting on a group of examples the issue of Opole’s development in the first five years after the end of Second World War (1945-1950) as a byproduct of tensions and tractions occuring between antagonistic pursuits, ideas and attitudes. Among those aformentioned binaries, which affected the city’s image and development, are: Wrocław and Katowice; Lower and Upper Silesia; big and small city; Polishness and Germanness; interruption and continuation; negation and acceptance. Tensions rising between those oppositions, which can be seen in Opole’s post-war history, turned Opole into a curious case of a city „in-between”.

    Opis:
    The article is an anthropological interpretation of the monument White/Wash II – a Memorial for the Victims of the 1946 Pogrom designed by Jack Sal and erected in Kielce, the town where the pogrom took place. The analysis includes functions and communicational relationships of the monument in the urban architecture and artistic space. The cognitive process revealed that the image of a house is an axiological center of the artist’s architectural narrative. Thus, the polymorphism and polysemy of the monument are perceptible. The monument allusively invokes the archetype of a house, the symbol of the Jewish “shtetl”. It also assumes the form of a symbolic memory sign – a medallion – with an outline of the house and the backstreet where the pogrom took place in the postwar history of the Jewish nation. Jack Sal’s monument develops an innovative language of public discourse, and being a cultural text, it creates a code that indicates the values which are manifested in the urban space – living and building – representing the idea of a family nest, an existential expression of a human community. The artist’s symbolic narrative refers to the subjective, personal consciousness of viewers and their hermeneutic intuition which allows for recognizing the values common to people of different nations, times and cultures.

    This article attempts to shed more light on the issues of historic values possessed by industrial architecture. Its source base results from the ethnographic research carried out by the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography in Łódź in the selected districts of the Lublin Voivodeship, i.e. Łuków, Parczew and Radzyń in the years 2004–2013. This research is also a continuation of the work on the Catalogue of industrial buildings of historical value in Poland. The article focuses on the values of industrial facilities to be seen in their style and architectural details, the dangers to their existence and the examples of the undertaken initiatives for the preservation of the industrial architecture – a vital element of our cultural heritage.
    Niniejszy artykuł jest próbą prezentacji problematyki walorów zabytkowych posiadanych przez architekturę przemysłową. Jego bazę źródłową stanowią wyniki badań etnograficznych przeprowadzonych przez Muzeum Archeologiczne i Etnograficzne w Łodzi na terenie wybranych powiatów województwa lubelskiego, tj. łukowskiego, parczewskiego i radzyńskiego w latach 2004–2013. Badania te stanowią kontynuację prac nad Katalogiem zabytków budownictwa przemysłowego w Polsce. W ramach artykułu skupiono uwagę na atutach obiektów przemysłowych w postaci np. posiadanego stylu czy detali, zagrożeń związanych z ich istnieniem oraz przykładami działań na rzecz ich ochrony jako elementu dziedzictwa kulturowego.

    Opis:
    Celem artykułu jest uzupełnienie biografii Gizelli Gryczyńskiej (do 1936 r. używającej panieńskiego nazwiska Margulies) - polskiej architektki pochodzenia żydowskiego. Analiza źródeł archiwalnych oraz materiałów zgromadzonych w Zbiorach Fotografii i Rysunków Pomiarowych Instytutu Sztuki PAN umożliwiła zaprezentowanie aktywności Gizelli Gryczyńskiej na polu inwentaryzacji zabytków. W artykule omówiono jej udział w akcji inwentaryzacyjnej w Kazimierzu Dolnym, prowadzonej w latach 1933–1934 pod egidą Towarzystwa Opieki nad Zabytkami Przeszłości w ramach rządowego Funduszu Pracy. Jednoczenie dzięki kwerendom w Archiwum Państwowym w Kielcach oraz Dziale Ewidencji Studentów Politechniki Warszawskiej udało się ujawnić szereg nieznanych dotąd materiałów źródłowych, rzucających nowe światło na działalność zawodową i życie osobiste Gizelli Gryczyńskiej po 1936 r., a tym samym ukazać dorobek życiowy bohaterki artykułu w odmiennej perspektywie, z uwzględnieniem kontekstu ekonomicznego i społecznego tamtych czasów.
    The aim of the article is to supplement the biography of Gizella Gryczyńska, until 1936 Margulies, a Polish architect of Jewish origin. An analysis of archival sources and materials from the Collections of Photographs and Survey Drawings held at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences has made it possible to present her activity in the field of inventorying historical monuments. The article describes Gizella Gryczyńska's participation in the inventory-taking action conducted in the years 1933–1934 in Kazimierz Dolny under the aegis of the Society for the Protection of the Monuments of the Past in the framework of the governmental Labour Fund. At the same time, search queries conducted in the State Archive in Kielce and in the Student Records Division of the Warsaw University of Technology revealed a number of hitherto unknown source materials that shed new light on Gryczyńska's professional activity and personal life after the year 1936. Thus, it has been possible to present her achievements in a new perspective, taking under consideration the economic and social context of the era.
