Opis:
The article presents a novel method that allows measurement of thermal conductivity that is based on Stefan-Boltzmann law. The developed method can be used to determine thermal conductivity of ceramic investment casting molds. The methodology for conducting thermal conductivity tests of ceramic material samples is presented. Knowledge of the value of thermal capacity and thermal conductivity as a function of temperature enables computer simulations of the process of cooling and solidification of liquid metal in a mold.

The modern designing techniques and development procedures requires the use of advanced integrated methods. That kind of approach requires the involvement of series of steps which leads to the logical work stream known as Integrated Computational Material Engineering. The steps involve the design and evaluation process in the virtual environment of CAD/CAE and simulation software. The use of simulation software allows for online optimization of the shape and properties of designed part. The publication presents a design and manufacturing process of a component of the larger assembly of the chassis of heavy-duty machine. Established methodology includes the analysis of the initial geometry of the part of the heavy vehicle used in difficult wetland environmental conditions.

Opis:
Tensile strength of aluminum castings has been improved by employing surge and filter in a conventional non-pressurizing gating system. For this purpose, three non-pressurizing bottom-gating systems were designed where the first design was a simple design with no filter and no surge, in the second design filter and in the third one surge was added to the end of runner. Tensile strength, Weibull module, scanning electron microscopy, chemical analysis, and melt pattern during the mold filling were thoroughly analyzed to compare these three designs. it was observed that employing filter and surge in the gating system reduces flow kinetic energy and consequently avoid surface turbulence and air entrainment, which leads to castings with fewer defects and higher reliabilities. Finally, it found that appropriate use of surge in the running system can be as effective as employing a filter in reducing melt front velocity.

Opis:
In this study, rubber seed/shea butter oil was used to formulate core oil. The formulated core oil was characterised. D-optimal mixture design was used for multi response optimisation of the functional properties of rubber seed-shea butter coil oil. Desirable values for some responses might be obtained from a factor combination while for others responses not so desirable values. Through multiple response optimisations, a factor setting that gives the desirable values for all responses was obtained. The selected optimum mixture setting for the formulated core oil is 65.937% Rubber seed and 34.063% Shea butter oil at desirability of 0.924. Under the optimum condition the functional properties of the core oil was found to be 39.57KN/M2, 626.85KN/M2, 36.63KN/M2, 593.906KN/M2, 412.605 and 167.309s for Green Compressive Strength, Dry Compressive Strength, Green Tensile Strength, Dry Tensile Strength, Permeability and Collapsibility respectively. The optimum conditions were validated with less than 0.2% error. The functional properties of the formulated core oil was compared to the functional properties of linseed core oil. It was found that rubber seed-shea butter core oil can be used for producing cores suitable for Aluminium casting.

Opis:
The objective of research is to define aluminium and its production wastes melting modes in electric unit while applying protective fluxes layer. This article cites the results of researches on development of flux structure for melting of aluminium production wastes. Melting unit diagram and results of research defining aluminium production wastes melting temperature regime are exemplified. Modes of metal charging, heating-up and melting of aluminium and its production wastes are exemplified for the electric unit with movable upper and immovable lower electrodes. The article describes the results of researches and recommendations that smelting chamber temperature to be maintained in the range of 1000-1100 °С, with melting zone temperature at 1400-1500 °С. It is recommended that charging of production wastes slag was carried after flux melt and reached 700-750 °С. Tables cite fluxes compositions that allow conducting aluminium melting process in various units. In the conclusion it is stated that application of a corresponding design of melting unit in aggregate with graphite electrodes and protective fluxes provides: - reduction of irretrievable metal burn-off losses; - savings on energy expenditures; - quality upgrade of liquid smelt due to decrease of oxide inclusions and occluded gas concentration.

Opis:
The objective of this work is to gain a deeper understanding of the separation effects and particle movement during filtration of non-metallic inclusions in aluminum casting on a macroscopic level. To understand particle movement, complex simulations are performed using Flow 3D. One focus is the influence of the filter position in the casting system with regard to filtration efficiency. For this purpose, a real filter geometry is scanned with computed tomography (CT) and integrated into the simulation as an STL file. This allows the filtration processes of particles to be represented as realistically as possible. The models provide a look inside the casting system and the flow conditions before, in, and after the filter, which cannot be mapped in real casting tests. In the second part of this work, the casting models used in the simulation are replicated and cast in real casting trials. In order to gain further knowledge about filtration and particle movement, non-metallic particles are added to the melt and then separated by a filter. These particles are then detected in the filter by metallographic analysis. The numerical simulations of particle movement in an aluminum melt during filtration, give predictions in reasonable agreement with experimental measurements.

Opis:
Throughout the casting process, mold filling plays a very significant role in the casting quality control. It is important to study the effect of gating system design on ingate velocity of the metal which affects the mechanical properties of casting. The effect of varying the design of four gating system elements namely pouring cup, sprue height, runner and ingate design on the multiple responses like tensile strength and percentage elongation is studied using a Taguchi’s L9 OA. The Taguchi technique was coupled with a Grey Relational Analysis (GRA) to obtain a Grey Relational Grade (GRG) for evaluating multiple responses. ANOVA has been applied to identify the significance of different parameters and it was found that the pouring cup design and the runner cross-section along its length collectively contributed above 76% of the total GRG value. Finally, the confirmation tests were performed to validate the predicted optimized results and it established an improvement of 9.90% from the initial design.
