Opis:
The samples of particulate matter (PM10) were collected at five sampling sites of various character situated in the Moravian-Silesian Region (Czech Republic). Concentrations of heavy metals bound to particulate matter were determined by the method of ICP – optical emission spectroscopy. The contamination of heavy metals was expressed as the pollution load index – PLI. Human health risk assessment was performed by U.S. EPA method – using the hazard quotient – HQ, hazard index – HI, and excess lifetime cancer risk – ELCR. The pollution and resulting carcinogenic risks increase during the winter season. The potential non-carcinogenic risks are not significant.
Próbki pyłu zawieszonego (PM10) zebrano w pięciu miejscach o różnym charakterze w regionie Morawskośląskim (Republika Czeska). Stężenie metali ciężkich związanych z cząstkami stałymi oznaczano metodą ICP - optycznej spektroskopii emisyjnej. Zanieczyszczenie metalami ciężkimi zostało wyrażone jako wskaźnik obciążenia zanieczyszczeniem - PLI. Ocenę ryzyka dla zdrowia ludzkiego przeprowadzono metodą US EPA - z wykorzystaniem ilorazu zagrożenia - HQ, wskaźnika zagrożenia - HI i zwiększenia ryzyka wystąpienia raka w całym okresie życia - ELCR. Zanieczyszczenie i związane z tym ryzyko rako-twórczości zwiększa się w sezonie zimowym. Potencjalne zagrożenie nierakotwórcze nie jest znaczące.

Objectives The objective of this study was to present a technique for estimating the effect of ambient air pollution mix on health outcomes. Material and Methods We created a technique of indexing air pollution mix as a cause of the increased odds of health problems. As an illustrative example, we analyzed the impact of pollution on the frequency of emergency department (ED) visits due to colitis among young patients (age < 15 years, N = 11 110). Our technique involves 2 steps. First, we considered 6 ambient air pollutants (carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone, and 2 measures of particulate matter) treating each pollutant as a single exposure. Odds ratios (ORs) for ED visits associated with a standard increase (interquartile range – IQR) in the pollutants levels were calculated using the case-crossover technique. The ORs and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were also found for lagged exposures (for lags 1–9 days). Second, we defined a Health Air Study Index (HASI) to represent the combined impact of the 6 air pollutants. Results We obtained positive and statistically significant results for individual air pollutants and among them the following estimations: OR = 1.06 (95% CI: 1.02–1.1, NO₂ lag 3, IQR = 12.8 ppb), OR = 1.04 (95% CI: 1.01–1.07, SO₂ lag 4, IQR = 2.3 ppb), OR = 1.04 (95% CI: 1–1.06, PM lag 3, IQR = 6.2 μg/m³). Among the re-calculated ORs with the HASI values as an exposure, the highest estimated value was OR = 1.37 (95% CI: 1.12–1.68, for 1 unit of the HASI, lag 3). Conclusions The proposed index (HASI) allows to confirm the pattern of associations for lags obtained for individual air pollutants. In the presented example the used index (HASI) indicates the strongest relation with the exposure lagged by 3 days.

This study focuses on the influence of motor transport on various indicators of park ecosystems and Taraxacum officinale Web., as well as on their applicability to the bioindication of the urban environments in the largest megalopolis of Ukraine, namely, Kyiv. Our investigations were carried out in 14 park ecosystems exposed to different levels of aerotechnogenic loading: low pollution level in Pushcha-Vodytsya (park) and outskirts, average pollution level alongseven roads with medium traffic and high pollution level along eight highways. Pollen indication, integration and statistical methods were used to identify the most sensitive indicators of the impact of air pollutants. The aim is to assess the impact of vehicle emissions on the state of park ecosystems in the metropolis using bioindication and GIS technologies. The effects of air pollution on green infrastructure at the level of cells, organisms, groups and ecosystems in time and space are revealed. Under the influence of aerotechnogenic pollution, there is a deterioration of trees, their drying, defoliation of crowns and deterioration of integral indicators of park ecosystems. Using QGIS (Free open source geographic information system, version 3.12.3 „București”, May 15, 2020), we have created maps for the spread of air pollutants. The highest levels of air pollution and damage to parks were concentrated in the central part of the city with dense buildings and near heavy traffic roads. The average daily maximum allowable concentration (MAC) of phytotoxicants exceeded 1.5 MACa.d. and depended on the terrain and directions of the prevailing winds. We registered degradation of the megalopolis ecological state by 19.3% for 7 years.

Air quality is closely related to people’s health and life. In addition to being directly affected by social activities and atmospheric emissions, the impacts of meteorological factors are also significant. Based on daily Air Quality Index (AQI) data and various meteorological parameters in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), this paper summarized the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of AQI over YRD, and quantitatively analyzed the contribution of different meteorological elements to air quality. We also evaluated different spatial interpolation methods to produce surface distribution of AQI, and noted that the Ordinary Kriging outperformed other methods. The spatial distribution of AQI in YRD showed seasonal and annual variations. However, the days with AQI over 100 (level ii) were mostly observed in winter. Generally, more severe air pollution was observed in the northern part of YRD than in the southern ones, for example the air quality of the Ningbo metropolitan area was the best, while in Hefei it was the worst. It was found that meteorological parameters have spatially varying effects on AQI. For instance, pressure has a significant positive effect on AQI, and others showed negative correlations. We also predicted AQI by exploiting different machine learning-based models. Through model comparison, it was found that the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average Model – ARIMA (0,1,2) has higher prediction accuracy for AQI than Multiple Linear Regression (MLR). The findings of this research can be used in future forecasting of air pollution, and also in air pollution controlling programs.

A novel infectious corona virus disease (COVID-19) was identified in the month of December 2019. It has now been announced as a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization. COVID-19 pandemic has positive impacts on the environmental pollutants. In present work, Coalfield areas of Jharia Coalfields (JCF), India have been taken as a case study to evaluate the effect of the lockdown on air quality at 10 locations. This study had been selected to estimate the reduction in concentration of pollutants likePM10, PM2.5, SO2, and NOx during 3 Seasons (summer, Post-Monsoon and winter season) in the year 2019 in comparison to the concentration during the lockdown period i.e. from April 2020 to June 2020. The study areas selected was as fire affected and non-fire affected areas of Jharia Coalfield to identify the contribution of pollutants in the mining area to establish the baseline concentration of Business as usual (BAU) vs. the lockdown condition. The average reduction in concentration of PM10, PM2.5, SO2 and NOx was observed as 18%, 14%, 22% and 26% respectively during the lockdown period in comparison with the annual average concentration. As observed, the AQI value at the selected monitoring sites in JCF was 1.5 times higher in comparison to the lockdown period. This study will provide the confidence to the regulatory body for strict implementation of the applicable air quality standard/policies in the mining areas. The study will also provide confidence to the regulatory body in making emission control strategies for improvement of environmental conditions and human health.

Ditlenek siarki jest jednym ze wskaźnikowych gazów, które decydują o jakości powietrza atmosferycznego, zwłaszcza na obszarach aglomeracji miejskich. Pochodzi on zarówno z emisji przemysłowej, jak i ze źródeł lokalnych (tzw. niskiej emisji). Celem pracy była analiza rozkładu przestrzennego ditlenku siarki na obszarze Bielska-Białej oraz opracowanie mapy jakości powietrza z uwzględnieniem indeksu jakości powietrza dla badanego polutanta. W pracy wykorzystano materiały z przeprowadzonych w 2012 r. badań własnych, zrealizowanych w oparciu o japońską metodę Amaya-Sugiura w modyfikacji Krochmala. Materiał badawczy pochodził z ekspozycji próbników pasywnych na 30-50 stanowiskach pomiarowych, rozmieszczonych z uwzględnieniem zróżnicowanej topografii oraz form zagospodarowania terenu w granicach administracyjnych gminy Bielsko-Biała. Na podstawie miesięcznych stężeń ditlenku siarki, wahających się od 5 μg/m3 na obszarach pozamiejskich do 20 μg/m3 w centrum miasta, oraz przyjętych klas indeksu jakości powietrza opracowano mapę bonitacyjną sytuacji aerosanitarnej.
Sulphur dioxide is one of the indicator gases that affect the air quality, especially in urban areas. It comes mostly from industrial emissions as well as from local sources (so-called low emission). The aim of this study was to analyze the spatial distribution of sulfur dioxide in Bielsko-Biala area and to develop maps of the air quality taking into account the air quality index for the pollutant tested. The paper includes test results obtained by means of a Japanese method (the Amaya-Sugiura’s method) modified by Krochmal. The research material came from the exposure of passive samplers located in 30-40 measuring stands in administrative boundary of Bielsko-Biala. The samplers were distributed taking into account a diversity of topography and a land development plan. On the basis of month concentrations of sulfur dioxide ranging from 5 μg/m3 in non-urban areas to 20 μg/m3 in the city center and accepted classes of the air quality index, a bonitation map of air quality situation was made.
