Opis:
The article focuses on the behavioral component of attitudes towards health and more specifically, on pro-health behaviours of women. The analysis shows that there are differences in health behaviours between women who represent different age categories. With age women change they concerning about health and the way they take care of this resource, which are influenced not only by biological factors. Cultural concepts of sex (gender) and age (gendered age) which exist in specific cultural model of society are also crucial.

Background: Hereditary haemochromatosis (HH) is an inherited disease in which gene mutation leads to excessive iron absorption and accumulation in different organs, including the heart, which causes damage. Whether the age of patients with HH at the moment of their first diagnosis has an additional effect on the standard echocardiographic parameters was the aim of the study. Material and methods: We prospectively enrolled 20 HH patients, and 20 healthy age- and sex-matched volunteers. Analysis of standard echocardiographic parameters was performed and compared in subgroups of ≥50 and <50 years old (yo). Results: Comparing HH patients with healthy volunteers in ≥50 yo subgroup, significant differences were found in parameters regarding diastolic function (IVS thickness, LVM index, Em, E/Em, PV S/D, LAA index and LAV index). In the <50 yo subgroup we did not find the abovementioned differences, however LVEF appeared to be lower in the HH patients. Conclusions: Despite the lack of clinical symptoms of cardiovascular disease and the lack of deviations in the standard echocardiographic examination, there were a number of differences regarding LV diastolic function parameters in HH patients ≥50 yo, whereas differences regarding LV systolic function were more prominent in HH patients <50 yo when compared with healthy subjects.

Opis:
In recent decades, a substantial demographic changes in the structure of Polish society. The decrease in growth, changes in family patterns, lengthening the duration of life, resulted in an aging population. According to demographic projections, the number of people of retirement age will increase by 2050. Globally and 25% in Europe, up to 51% of the entire population. These changes can also be observed in Poland, where declining number of births and marriages, and a shift in the average age of reproduction. In 2002 he was reached level 14% of people of retirement age in the total population of the country which is considered the limit for the completion of the aging population. GUS expected number of people of retirement age will increase from 6, 5 million in 2010 to 9, 6 million in 2035, which would represent 26, 7% of the total population. The aging process has a multifaceted dimension; medical, psychological, social, ethical and deserves special attention in the era of political and socio-economic. From the point of view of gerontopedagogiki, old age is a period of life in which man can live actively pursuing their interests, participate in social activities, educate and serve their knowledge and experience. Already Helena Radlińska (creator of special education in Poland 1935.) And Aleksander Kaminski emphasized the need to take action care centers for the elderly. They believed that social pedagogy must take issues such as the implementation of elderly people to new behaviors and accept old age, and the launch facilities intended for the elderly, where they could spend their free time actively.

Zalicza do nich fragmentaryczną wiedzę o cielesności, psychiczności i duchowości człowieka starszego, trudne tematy egzystencjalne, m.in. doświadczenie śmierci i osamotnienia, zagadnienia wymagające „weryfikacji”, np. kult młodości i zewnętrzności, potrzeby osób starszych, opieka i pomoc w starości, rola rodziny, odniesienie do rozwoju i aktywności, zmiany i pośpiechu, przewidywalność i przygotowanie do starości, a także tzw. gerontologiczne tabu: zaprzeczanie starości i duchowości, odsuwanie kwestii przemijania i transcendencji, towarzyszenie w drodze człowiekowi starszemu. Ukazuje potrzebę traktowania starości jako wartości.
In the text the authoress has reflections on the state of scientific knowledge and social awareness of the topic of ageing process and old age. She particularly pays attention to the issues which are shown in an incomplete way and which should be the subject of further scientific studies and analyses. They include fragmentary knowledge of corporeality, mentality and spirituality of an elderly person, difficult existential topics, among them the experience of death and loneliness, issues requiring “verification”, e.g. the cult of youth and outsideness, the needs of the elderly, care and help in old age, the role of a family, the attitude to development and activity, change and hurry, predictability and preparing for old age and also the so called gerontological taboo: denying old age and spirituality, pushing away the question of passing and transcendentalism, accompanying an elderly person in their journey. She shows the need of treating old age as value.

Opis:
Background: Atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia (AVNRT) is the most common paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. The relatively ineffective antiarrhythmic drugs and the predominant young age makes the catheter ablation the therapy of choice in many patients. This results in predominance of this arrhythmia in electrophysiological labs. The aim of the study was to analyze the gender-related differences among patients undergoing the radiofrequency catheter ablation of slow pathway entrance to the atrioventricular node. Material and methods: The study group comprised of 147 consecutive patients with diagnosed atrioventricular nodal reentry tachycardia, who underwent the radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) of slow pathway. Patients have been divided into 2 groups, based on sex. Results: The overall 97.3% of effectiveness of RFCA was observed. Women were significantly younger than men (53.7+/-17.2 vs 57.7+/-9.8 years) with lower radiation dose (2383.5+/-1993.2 vs 2891.6+/-2377.1 cGyxcm2). Conclusions: Younger age of women in comparison to men during RFCA of AVNRT reflects earlier onset of symptoms in women. Gender does not affect the time of fluoroscopy, but the higher rate of inducible tachycardia after RFCA in women may suggest the existence of anatomical difficulties or the operator’s apprehensions. Sex-related difference in radiation dose that we have observed may result from the greater volume of the men’s chest.

A number of complex challenges that are irreversible in the short term are faced in the management of modern organizations. One such challenge is the aging population. The answer to it is strategic age management as an important element of diversity management. A strategic and deliberate approach to aging workers implies transition from exclusion to inclusion. This paper begins with a discussion of diversity management and its evolution, which is followed by a presentation of the worker exclusion–inclusion continuum. This serves as that background for presenting possible approaches to age management in organizations.

Opis:
The laws associated with aged women in the New Testament usually refer to widows. Two authors of Pastoral Epistles are trying to fill this gap, formulating generic imperatives. What is suprising in these imperatives is the terminology connected with aged women: presbytis (Tit. 2:3) and presbytera (1 Tim. 5:2). The morphological similarity of these terms with the well-known word "presbyter", preaches in a way that one suspects indicates not only age but also function. By analysis of preserved inscriptions - from Ephesus, where Timothy exercised his ministry, and from Crete connected with the Letter to Titus - we come to the conclusion that in local Jewish communities the office of female-presbyters is well known. These monuments shed a new light on the more difficult verses of Pastoral Epistles and pave the way for new interpretation, assuming that groups of aged women were part of the community of elders, or they were leaders. The existence of this practice is also provided by Epiphanius and the 11th Canon of the Synod of Laodicea.

The attitude to corruption and the perception of it (as well as the acceptance or rejection of corruption) depends largely on the customs and traditions in a particular country, with the causes of corruption deriving from the political, economic, social conditions of a particular country and from the historical development, customs and culture. However, the demographic indicators must not be ignored. The existing researches thus show that the perception of corruption, at least to some extent, depends on gender (women are supposedly less corrupt and perceive corruption more; age and education). For the purpose of this article, the influence of demographic indicators (gender, age) on the perception of corruption in Slovenia was researched. The results were compared with the already known researches and it was determined that there are no statistically significant differences in the perception of corruption with regard to gender and age, which shows that Slovenia, in view of the specifics of the corruption perception (although the corruption perception is high in Slovenia), differs from other countries in which researches took place.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is the evaluation of how the decline of cognitive abilities caused by aging is moderated by biologically determined personality dimensions: Neuroticism (N) and Extraversion (E). Materials and Methods: The research was conducted with the participation of 160 men in good physical health, professional drivers, aged 20–70 (Mean = 40, SD = 11). Personality traits were measured using Eysenck’s Personality Questionnaire — Revised (EPQ-R), while Ravens Progressive Matrices, Go/noGo Task and Peripheral Perception Test were used to evaluate cognitive processes. The score of Ravens Progressive Matrices was treated as a control variable. Results: The results of the study, based on a Hierarchical Multiple Regression Analysis, indicate that besides the intelligence level, age is the best predictor of cognitive functioning level and that this infl uence is additionally moderated by the N trait level as well as, less frequently, by the interaction of age and E. Conclusion: This means that high N trait level increases the infl uence of age on cognitive functions decline. When the N trait level was low, the age differences in measures of cognitive performance were not signifi cant. Thus, the level of N trait may play an important role in the process of cognitive aging. The results are discussed in the context of a driving safety research.

The left hemiface expresses emotion more intensely than the right. Because emotional expressions contract the facial muscles and wrinkle the skin, theoretically the left hemiface’s greater expressivity should prompt more pronounced expression lines and wrinkles on the left than right side of the face. As wrinkles are the most salient age cue, we investigated whether the left hemiface consequently appears older than the right. Two hundred and sixty participants (F=148; M=112) viewed booklets containing pairs of left-left and right-right chimeric faces of eight models (M=F). For each trial participants were asked to make a two alternative forced choice response indicating which image looked older. Results confirmed a left cheek bias, with participants more likely to select left-left than right-right chimeras. Whilst participant gender did not influence perceptions, model gender predicted cheek selections: responses to female models drive the overall left cheek bias. The left cheek (56.8%) appeared older than the right cheek (43.2%) for female models, whereas there was little difference in perceived age between male models' left (50.8%) and right (49.2%) cheeks. Given that youth influences perceptions of female beauty, these findings complement previous research and offer a potential explanation for why the left side of females’ faces are judged less attractive: the right cheek appears younger.
