Opis:
Ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi and their symbiotic associations with forest trees are among major drivers of key ecosystem functions such as carbon and nitrogen cycling, plant nutrient and water uptake from soil, plant-plant facilitation/competition and diversity regulation via common mycorrhizal networks. Through their functional traits and interactions with both abiotic and biotic environment, they also significantly affect the process of open land colonization by trees as well as vegetation succession coupled with soil and ecosystem development. Here we review the role of ECM fungi in the early primary and secondary succession following major anthropogenic disturbances. Based on the examples of mine spoils and post-agricultural lands, we demonstrate key ecosystem services provided by ECM fungi in the processes of forest restoration. We point out ecological mechanisms and adaptations which underpin ECM fungal community successional interactions, particularly life histories, dispersal, spatial structure, host preferences, and sensitivity to environmental filters. We emphasize the need of better understanding the role of ECM fungi in the forest restoration practice as it seems crucial for afforestation success and biodiversity rehabilitation. Thus, ectomycorrhizal traits should be a prime consideration in afforestation and carbon sequestration polices, sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation practices.

Zbiorowiska obydwu kategorii powierzchni różnił skład i budowa. Zbiorowiska z sukcesji, ze względu na większą różnorodność, powinny stanowić uzupełnienie rekultywacji leśnej.
The soil and vegetation in area reclaimed and left the succession were re-searched on the post-mining areas KS Grzybów. There was not detected the phytotoxic sulfation of soils. Plant communities composition were different for both categories. The communities appeared in the way of succession should be complementary in the forest reclamation process because of their bigger diversity.

Opis:
The studies on the assessment of forest reclamation on post-mining areas of the Osiek Sulpfur Mine were carried out on 24 experimental plots (10 × 10 m), sixteen of which were located in the area where the full cycle of reclamation treatments was conducted, whereas eight of them were the lands where the existing secondary biocenoses were used. The ongoing forest reclamation on the post-mining lands of the "Osiek" Sulphur Mine was assessed as generally appropriate. The trees that entered the area under the evaluation through succession displayed lower quality, though considerably higher viability when compared with those introduced in the scope of reclamation treatments. While the initial soils in the areas subjected to the full cycle of reclamation treatments were characterised by more favourable granulation, higher pH value and higher carbonate con-tent in relation to the soils where the biocenoses formed through succession were left.

Zmiany w zbiorowiskach roślinnych z Molinia caerulea, Festuca rubra i Deschampsia caespitosa opisują wskaźniki różnorodności gatunkowej Shannona, odrębności florystycznej oraz walor florystyczny.
Studies were carried out in 2004 and 2005, in village Wiersze in the Kampinos National Park . The paper shows the results of studies on changes of five groups of plant communities. They occupied a mown meadow, meadow abandoned for 10 years and meadow overgrown by 15 years old oak. There were significant changes in communities with Agrostis canina, Deschampsia caespitosa and in Magnocaricion alliance. The results were checked with Wilcoxon test, based on the comparison of mean number of taxa in syntaxonomic groups. On mown meadow the succession of plant communities was hampered by mowing. Their similarity was higher there than on other meadows. Floristic individuality O f ; floristic value W f and Shannon diversity index were smaller. Secondary succession was noted on abandoned meadow and afforested meadow. The first forest plants which appeared there were trees and shrubs. Their localization depended on habitat conditions. The area occupied by meadows was not flat. Elevations differed by even 80 cm. Communities with Agrostis canina and Magnocaricion alliance grew in depressions. Sites of higher elevation were overgrown by communities with Festuca rubra, Deschampsia caespitosa and Molinia caerulea. Communities with Molinia caerulea grew particularly at the border between wet and fresh habitats on abandoned meadows. Trees and shrubs appeared first at the border between wet and fresh habitats. Generally, floristic individuality O f and floristic value W f decreased in communities of abandoned meadow. Unstable communities with shrubs and trees on the whole surface were noted on the afforested meadow. Differences in altitude faded there due to afforestation. Plants of wet habitats grew in ploughed strips. Plants of fresh habitats were noted between the strips. These artificial conditions caused a higher number of taxa in communities with Agrostis canina and Deschampsia caespitosa. In these communities Shannon diversity index and floristic individuality O f increased. In communities with Festuca rubra, Molinia caerulea the indices decreased. Individual species of grasses started to dominate there. Stenotopic species disappeared. Floristic individuality decreased in communities with Magnocaricion alliance due to spreading of common plant species of fresh and wet habitats.

Opis:
Secondary succession is a long and complicated natural process returning forests to post agricultural lands, whereas afforestation is an attempt to speed up this process by planting trees. Massive afforestation in the twentieth century brought an increase in forest area in Poland along with management problems in these areas due to disturbances caused by root diseases. Therefore it appears necessary to employ successional processes more fully in order to create sustainable forest ecosystems.

Research on the effect of birch regeneration on changes occurring in the environment on former farmlands included a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the biomass growing on the research plots. Five experimental plots were selected in the Mazovia region: two in Dobieszyn and the Kampinos National Park and one in Kozienice. The analysis performed on each plot was concerned with the amount and chemical composition of biomass in four patches of vegetation, characterised by the different ages of the birch trees growing there. The vegetation patches were classified according to age group, i.e. I: 1–4 years old, II: 5–8 years old, III: 9–12 years old and IV: over 12 years old. Biomass samples were collected in the field and determined in kg DM/ha using the following components: roots, stem, bark, branches, assimilation apparatus, litterfall and the total biomass of the other (except birch) plants. For all the above-mentioned groups, the content of the elements N, C, S, Ca, K, Mg, Na, P, Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn, Pb, and Cd was determined. This allowed us to obtain both the values of the concentrations of particular substancesand their allocation in both the organic matter and litterfall. The aim of theresearch was to discover whether the allocation of elements changes with the age of birch growing on former farmland.

Opis:
The paper analyses the production and allocation of biomass in young, spontaneoussilver birch afforestation occurring on post-agricultural lands in the Mazowszeregion (central Poland). We investigated 114 sample plots of age varying from 1 to 19 years. During the first 15 years after their establishment on abandoned farmland, the naturally regenerated silver birch stands produced on average approximately 75 tons of dry biomass per hectare. The major (50–70%) part of this biomass was stored in the tree stems and this share increased with age. The fractions of biomass in the foliage and roots decreased over time, while the share of biomass in the branches remained rather constant. The significant age-dependency of the allometric relationships suggested the need to use age-sensitive biomass expansion factors to estimate the biomass from the stem volume.

Opis:
The paper deals with the structural diversity and production of a less frequently studied type of alder stands originated on former agricultural lands in the 1950s, established partly by plantation and partly by natural succession in the area of the Krkonoše Mts. and the Orlické hory Mts. (Czech Republic). Four permanent research plots (PRP) were established at sites where Black alder (Alnus glutinosa L. Gaertn.) and Grey alder (Alnus incana L. Moench.) naturally occurs, each plot of 0.25 ha in size. The aim of the study was to evaluate the structure and development of the alder stands with respect to biodiversity, horizontal, vertical and species structure, diameter increment with emphasis on climate factors, and the quantity and quality of timber production. The results document low diversification of the studied stands in the PRPs. The horizontal structure is defined as random and clumped at sites at the highest altitude with high water table. The number of living trees with DBH ≥ 4 cm ranges between 556 to 828 trees ha-1 with the relative stand density index (SDI) 0.67–0.77. The stand volume ranges from 247 to 393 m3 ha–1, and decreases with higher altitudes. Low temperatures is limiting factor for radial growth in the high mountain areas, respectively low precipitation in the middle lands. Owing to a rather specific site character, as especially the spring area, the stands exhibit only average production, but the production quality is generally high. The quality timber is suitable for industrial use; the rot-affected trunk base parts usable for fuel represent only approximately 16%.

Investigations were carried out in 2000−2001 on the succession of carabid assemblages accompanying the spontaneous succession of pine stands on former agricultural land. Observations concerning changes in the number of carabid individuals and species, proportion of individuals in the groups: developmental, ecological, trophic, geographical, moisture preference, wing differences, as well as the mean individual biomass (MIB) indicated that the development of carabid assemblages during the spontaneous succession of stands can be compared to the regeneration process of the carabid fauna that accompany afforestation and that the direction of this development is similar to the development of carabid assemblages that accompany afforestation of farmlands.

Opis:
The main purpose of the study was to compare carabid beetles assemblages from recultivated and spontaneously regenerated forest of post−industrial areas. The survey was conducted in southern part of Poland in three environmental types: recultivated (afforested) dumping grounds, spontaneously re−vegetated dumping grounds and reference forests. In total, 2036 specimen belonging to 36 Carabidae species were collected. GLM analysis indicated that carabids assemblages structures (abundance, species richness, Fisher alpha index, general biomass and mean individual biomass) decreased on recultivated dumping grounds in comparison to areas with spontaneous succession and reference forest. Analysis of redundancy showed a wide variety of species composition and life traits parameters in respect to environmental types. SIMPER analysis showed that species characteristic for recultivated dumping grounds included e.g. Harpalus rufipes and Calathus erratus (small body size and herbivore strategy of feeding). C. erratus was the most dominant on spontaneously regenerated dumping grounds, while species typical for forest ecosystems included representatives of Carabus and Pterostichus sp. (brachypterous large or medium size predators).

Opis:
In Central Europe, deforestation led to a reduction of forest area by almost 80%, compared to the original area, by the beginning of the 20th century. At this point in time, a period of intensive reforestation began in an effort to restore forest areas. This process of reforestation, especially on post-agricultural land, continues to this day. This article examines reforestation and natural regeneration on former farmland and the factors that influence the current state as well as the future growth of the forest. Ancient and contemporary views on the functioning of stands on post-agricultural land created by both, natural and forced succession (i.e. afforestation), are recalled. In Poland, this issue primarily concerns managed state forests, which cover an area of over 2 million hectares. We discuss the differences in the development of these stands resulting from the history of agricultural cultivation, the type of afforestation, the influence of environmental factors as well as biotic threats to their development. Furthermore, the need to change the silviculture-, protection- and endowment-based approach to forest management in stands on post-agricultural land is highlighted.
