Opis:
This paper investigates the flotation behavior of Cyclohexyl hydroxamic acid (CHA) and benzhydroxamic acid (BHA) on cassiterite under lead nitrate activation conditions and elucidates the adsorption mechanism of CHA on the cassiterite surface. Microflotation experiments were performed to compare the capturing efficiency of CHA and BHA at pH values ranging from 4 to 12. Results showed that CHA exhibited superior capability in capturing cassiterite compared to BHA. The recovery of cassiterite in the hydroxamic acid-based flotation system correlated positively with the adsorption of hydroxamic acid on the cassiterite surface. Adsorption experiments revealed an increase in adsorption quantity with an increase in hydroxamic acid dosage, with CHA exhibiting significantly higher adsorption amount than BHA on the cassiterite surface. To analyze the adsorption mechanism of CHA on the cassiterite surface, both infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis were conducted, both before and after lead nitrate activation. IR spectra and XPS results indicated that lead ion activation enhanced the adsorption of CHA on the cassiterite surface, resulting in an increased number of active sites for CHA interaction. Additionally, chemisorption of CHA occurred on the cassiterite surface.

Opis:
Clay from Udi in Nigeria was mined, ground, and acid-leached at different concentrations of hydrochloric acid to produce adsorbents of varying properties. The raw and acid-leached samples were characterized using x-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Fourier transforms infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) to examine the structural modifications in the clay as a result of acid-leaching. The analysis showed that the acid-leaching process caused several modifications of the clay samples. The surface area, Si/[Al + Fe + Mg] ratio, adsorption capacity were found to have increased in the acid-leached samples. The acid-leached samples were tested in order to ascertain their performance in bleaching palm oil and it was observed that the bleaching efficiency increased from 29.8% to 66.7%. The acid-leached sample prepared with 7M hydrochloric acid yielded an adsorbent that was efficient in bleaching palm oil under the experimental conditions. The isotherm analysis showed that the bleaching process followed the Freundlich equation.

Opis:
The adsorption of lead ions onto a zeolite bearing tuff (stilbite) from synthetic acid aqueous solution and acid mine drainage taken from Sasa mine, Macedonia, is elaborated in this paper. The results present that adsorption occurs efficiently in both of cases. The physical and chemical properties of the used natural material, zeolite bearing tuff, are characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy. The concentration of metal ions in solution before and after treatment is obtained by AES-ICP. The effectivity of zeolite bearing tuff is determined through a series of experiments under batch conditions from single ion solutions, whereby the main parameters are the effects of initial pH of solution, mass of adsorbent, initial metal concentration in solution, contacting time and competing cations. The maximum capacity of zeolite bearing tuff for removal of lead ions from solution is determined by equilibrium studies. The experimental obtained data are fitted with Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models. The experimental data are better fitted with Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Zeolite bearing tuff is effective adsorbent for treating acid mine drainage. The results showed that 99% of lead ions are removed from acid mine drainage, i.e. the concentration of lead ions from 0.329 mg/dm3 decrease to 0.002 mg/dm3. The pH value of acid mine drainage from 3.90 after treatment with zeolite bearing tuff increases to 5.36.

Bacterial adsorption on mineral surface is one of the key steps in bioleaching process. The bacteria adsorb on the mineral surface via the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) layer. In this paper, the behavior of glucuronic acid, one of the key substances in EPS layer, adsorbed on the pyrite surface is studied using DFT and electrochemical methods. Adsorption capacity of glucuronic acid is stronger than that of water. Glucuronic acid adsorbs on pyrite surfaces and it follows a mixed type of interactions (physisorption and chemisorption). Adsorption of glucuronic acid on pyrite surface followed Langmuir’s adsorption isotherm with adsorption standard free energy of –27.67kJ mol-1. The structural and electronic parameters were calculated and discussed.

The successful acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment needs site-specific installation and implementation, as well as the deployment of technology that is compatible with the pollutants contained in the AMD. If key by-products of the AMD can be recovered, the financial sustainability of the AMD remediation method may be greatly improved. Additional research into novel and innovative solutions is necessary to advance in this direction. To accomplish this, it is necessary to have a complete awareness of current remediation technologies that are available and accessible. Active physical treatment methods such as ion exchange, adsorption, electrochemistry, and membrane techniques were examined in this article. Membrane technology excels in terms of ease of use, versatility, and environmental effect but produces brine streams the management of which remains vital for future adoption of the technology. Liquid membranes (LM), Micellar Enhanced Ultra-Filtration (MEUF), and Polyelectrolyte Enhanced Ultra-Filtration (PEUF) are all innovative membrane technologies that may provide some possibilities for metal recovery from chemical sludge and/or brine streams. Electrochemical technologies are considered an attractive alternative for AMD treatment, because they require only electricity as a consumable and can treat AMD to high standards by removing metals via (co)precipitation and sulfate via ionic migration (when an anion-exchange membrane is used in the configuration), while producing significantly less sludge. However, the accepted shortcomings include membrane/electrode fouling produced by (co)precipitates on the active surfaces necessary for the process, a lack of understanding regarding the effective scaling up to industrial scale, and the relatively expensive capital expenditure (CAPEX) required. The removal of heavy metals from AMD effluents by adsorption has a number of technical and environmental benefits, including high efficiency, and environmental friendliness. Despite its benefits, this technique has certain hurdles, such as the production process for low-cost adsorbents.

Opis:
Fluorite is an important mineral to produce hydrofluoric acid. As fluorite resources contain calcite as a gangue mineral, the separation between these two calcium containing minerals is difficult. Tannic acid is the most commonly used reagent as a depressant to separate fluorite from calcite by flotation. To enhance this separation, it is so primordial to understand tannic acid physicochemical reactivity via these minerals. Therefore, the aim of this work is to investigate the mechanism of tannic acid adsorption on the fluorite surface by experimental study using isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic. Adsorption isotherm modelling results showed that the adsorption process is well described by Sips model. On the other hand, the kinetic and thermodynamic require firstly the adsorption study as a function of three main reactional parameters including initial tannic acid concentration, solution pH and temperature. This study showed that acidic pH as well as initial tannic acid concentration increase and temperature decrease promote the studied adsorption. These finding were then exploited to determine the adsorption mechanism by pseudo n order kinetic model adjustment to experimental kinetic data using nonlinear regression method. Obtained high correlation coefficient and low mean absolute error at 95 % confidence level showed good agreement of experimental kinetic data with the tested model. These results revealed that the mechanism of tannic acid adsorption onto fluorite was attributed to a chemical reaction. In addition, the thermodynamic study showed that the studied adsorption process was exothermic.

The adsorptive features of the composite and the modifi Ed composite were investigated for the removal of Pb2+ from aqueous solution in view of dependency on pH, time, ion concentration, temperature, selectivity, kinetics and reusability. The adsorption isotherms were evaluated with reference to the Langmuir and Freundlich models. Thermodynamic of the system was calculated. ΔG<0 indicated that the adsorption process was spontaneous. Good compatibility of the adsorption kinetics to the pseudo-second-order model predicted that the rate-controlling step was a chemical sorption. The selectivity experiments showed that the adsorbents were selective toward Pb2+ In the presence of Zn2+ and Cd2+. The reusability of the adsorbent was tested for four regeneration cycles.

The first purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence of incubation parameters for efficiency of bacterial adhesion on surface of three solid, mineral porous carriers. Second aim of the study was the use of the immobilized Lactobacillus casei cells, in the production of lactic acid and selection, best carriers for continuous production using column bioreactor. The results showed that bacterial adhesion was different depending on the incubation conditions. In all tested samples, the highest efficiency of bacterial adhesion achieved after incubation at 30 °C without shaking which was related to bacterial viability. The results showed that, the highest efficiency of lactic acid production by free cells has been obtained at 30 °C after 48h – 110% (w/w) (lactic acid yield from consumed glucose). This results have been confirmed by further tests which have shown that in stationary culture, the highest production of lactic acid was reached by immobilised bacteria cells on pumice and kermiste after 48 hours at 30 °C.

Porous carbons obtained from poly(ethylene terephtalate) contained in a mixture with either MgCO3 or Mg(OH)2 were examined as adsorbents for removal of humic acid from water. Adsorption of the model contaminants is discussed in relation to the textural parameters of the obtained carbon materials. Pore structure parameters of the carbonaceous materials were strongly influenced by preparation conditions including temperature and relative amounts of the inorganics used during preparations as template. Porous carbons prepared revealed a potential to purify water from the model contaminant of high molecular weight. The results presented confirmed a key role of mesoporosity in the adsorption of humic acid. Fluorescence spectroscopy was confirmed to be an useful method to evaluate concentration of humic acid in water.

Abstract: Interactions of poly(acrylic acid)s (PAAs) of two different molecular weights (Mw = 9,560 g×$mol^{-1}$ and 4,220 g×$mol^{-1}$) with surfaces of an untreated anatase $TiO_2$ were assessed through adsorption isotherm measurements. Those dispersants were tested under different sodium-calcium neutralization states (molar ratio $r = Ca^{2+}$ / $CO_{2-}$ varying from 0 to 0.35). Their behavior towards the $TiO_2$ surfaces can be described by the Langmuir adsorption model. For both polymers, surface coverage ($Γ_max$) evolves linearly with the molar ratio $r$. For a given r value, a lower surface coverage was observed with the polymer having the highest molecular weight. The free energy of adsorption ($/DeltaG_{ads}$) of PAAs was estimated from adsorption experiment data. This calculation indicates that sorption occurs spontaneously and is unlikely to be of chemical nature. The absolute values of $/DeltaG_{ads}$ are higher for the highest molecular weight polymers suggesting that they are more strongly adsorbed to anatase surfaces. The absolute values of $/DeltaG_{ads}$ per mole of sodium-calcium macromolecules are found to be lower than those calculated for their homologues 100% sodium neutralized suggesting that they are bound with the solid by a fewer number of segments.

This paper proposes a promising chelating collector, phenyl propyl hydroxamic acid (BPHA), to directly float malachite for the separation of malachite against quartz. The flotation performance and mechanism was investigated via microflotation tests, as well as through contact angle, Scanning Electron Microscopeand Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (SEM–EDS), zeta potential, adsorption capacity, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The results of microflotation tests showed that BPHA has a strong ability to collect malachite and a significant selectivity against quartz. The contact angle tests showed that BPHA effectively adsorbed onto the mineral surface and could improve the hydrophobicity of the malachite surface. SEM–EDS and adsorption capacity analyses further indicated that BPHA adsorbed onto the surface of malachite. The FR-IR results suggested that BPHA could react with Cu2+ ions and facilitate strong chemical adsorption onto the surface of malachite. Furthermore, zeta potential and XPS analyses provided clear evidence that BPHA exhibited a stronger affinity for malachite and a weaker interaction with quartz.

Badania adsorpcji prowadzone w temperaturach 20 i 40°C świadczą o egzotermiczności procesu.
The article presents the results of the study on sorption of salicylic acid from water solutions on the selected industrial activated carbons: WG-12, ROW 08 and F-300. The highest efficiency of sorption was observed for the F-300 activated carbon. The efficiency of sorption on selected activated carbons depends on pH and temperature of the solution subjected to sorption. The highest number of particles was adsorbed at low values of pH (pH = 2) and at low temperature (20°C). With the increase in pH and temperature of the solution the efficiency of adsorption decreases.

Suspensions of calcium carbonate are of a major concern in various fields, such as coating, painting and ceramics and their rheological properties are very important. The effect of polyacrylic acid (PAA) of different molecular mass as a surface modifier on the surface and rheological properties of the aqueous suspension of calcium carbonate was investigated. The effect of the volume fraction of particles and polymer concentration on the viscosity at lower shear rate was discussed. The flow behavior of the concentrated suspension in the presence of PAA can be explained by the difference of the repulsive force among particles, induced by the adsorbed polymer. The results showed that the dispersibility is more pronounced by the steric hindrance behavior rather than the electrostatic behavior.
