Nowadays, it is necessary to develop a conceptual framework for analysing the relationship between the implementation of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and Supply Chain Management (SCM). In this context, a gap in the research has been observed in the new approach to designing the importance of AM in SCM. The main contribution of this paper, therefore, is a new framework to formulate the role in adopting AM in SCM. The research methodology is based on detailed literature studies of AM in relation to the SCM process within a manufacturing company, as well on a case study, namely the COWAN GmbH manufacturing company who specialise in producing homewares for motorhome enthusiasts. As highlighted in the state-of-the-art analysis, no work, currently available, supports all the features presented.

Mortar feedstock is extruded to form bead and it is selectively placed line by line in the material extrusion additive manufacturing. With respects to part building process healthiness, load-supporting ability of overlaid beads is emphasized as buildability. Buildability is primarily dependent on thixotropic properties of feedstock and vertical overlapping schedule. In the present study, water-to-binder (w/b) ratio was chosen as material aspect to assess buildability. Uneven bead shape evolution and premature failure were highlighted owing to low yield stress of high w/b ratio feedstock. Feedstock with optimum w/b ratio showed good buildability even at the interval time of 19 sec.

The aim of the additive manufacturing (AM) is a production of physical objects by adding material layer-by-layer based on virtual geometry developed in the computer system. The main criteria for the division of additive manufacturing methods are the way to apply the layer and the type of construction material. In most projects, the choice of method is a compromise between costs and properties (e.g. physical, chemical or mechanical) of the manufactured object. Currently, AM methods have found application in many areas of life, including industrial design, automotive, aerospace, architecture, jewellery, medicine and veterinary medicine, bringing many innovative and revolutionary solutions. The purpose of this article is to review of the additive production methods and present the potential of medical application.

Opis:
The paper presents a new methodology dedicated to design for additive manufacturing. Based on a hybrid algorithm of topological optimization, the method enables application of advanced constraints and validates solutions “on the fly” using virtual prototyping. Advanced constraints consider the influence of directions of additive manufacturing as well as the equivalent stress. In the optimization framework, real material properties related to three manufacturing directions were considered. The new design methodology is illustrated by benchmark tests and examples of wrist-hand orthosis topology optimization in which stress and manufacturing constraints were taken into account. As demonstrated by the conducted comparison tests with available commercial tools, the solutions obtained with the new method were characterized by lower mass and shorter computation time.

Opis:
Nowadays, plastic gears are more commonly used. The Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMS) structure can perfect the design to reduce weight but still achieve the desired workability criteria. It can also be adjusted more easily and scientifically than the empirical structure optimization based on experience. Currently, the fabrication of gears with complex internal structures such as TPMS is possible thanks to 3D printing technology. This study investigates the mechanical properties of a TPMS structure when applied to Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) plastic gears. The research content includes displacement, deformation, and Von-mises stress to evaluate the stiffness and strength of gears. The structure used to optimize the gear mass is the Gyroid structure, developed in the cylindrical cell map and studied in the paper. The goal of the research is to apply the Gyroid structure to optimize mass while still ensuring gear performance. This study not only offers new insight into the importance of the control variables for TPMS structures but also provides a mass lean process for gear designers. It uses experimental design methods to choose a suitable topology structure, and the final research result is a regression equation, which clearly shows the close relationship between the volume reduction and displacement with the specified control variables of the unit cell. From there, it is possible to determine the proper amount of material reduction while ensuring the working ability of the gear transmission.

Opis:
Additive manufacturing has been relying on conventional machinery architecture. Conventionally, the architecture used is a Cartesian set-up. The X-Y-Z axis move independently to move the tool on the X-Y plan and increment the Z-axis when the layer is finished. The machine architecture in this paper simplifies the design by constraining the machine to have solely one-degree of freedom. One degree of freedom is also known as a helix linkage. If individually controlled tools are placed all along the rotating arm, then this movement allows an opportunity to deposit material in a single sweeping motion. To increase furthermore the output, multiple arms can be added at a fixed angle. Finally, because of the predictive motion, multiple helix machines can be synchronized to create collaboratively a bigger part. This type of manufacturing process has potential applications in binder jetting, material jetting, and selective laser sintering.

Opis:
Three-axis machines are limited in the production of geometrical features in powder-bed additive manufacturing processes. In case of overhangs, support material has to be added due to the nature of the process, which causes some disadvantages. Robot-based wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is able to fabricate overhangs without adding support material. Hence, build time, waste of material, and post-processing might be reduced considerably. In order to make full use of multi-axis advantages, slicing strategies are needed. To this end, the CAD (computer-aided design) model of the part to be built is first partitioned into sub-parts, and for each sub-part, an individual build direction is identified. Path planning for these sub-parts by slicing then enables to produce the parts. This study presents a heuristic method to deal with the decomposition of CAD models and build direction identification for sub-entities. The geometric data of two adjacent slices are analyzed to construct centroidal axes. These centroidal axes are used to navigate the slicing and building processes. A case study and experiments are presented to exemplify the algorithm.

Recently, 3D printing processes have been used to manufacture metal powder filters with manufacturing complex-shape. In this study, metal powder filters of various shapes were manufactured using the metal extrusion additive manufacturing (MEAM) process, which is used to manufacture three-dimensional structures by extruding a filament consisting of a metal powder and a binder. Firstly, filaments were prepared by appropriately mixing SUS316 powder with sizes ranging from 7.5 µm to 50 µm and a binder. These filaments were extruded at temperatures of 100℃ to 160℃ depending on the type of filament being manufactured, to form three types of cylindrical filter. Specimens were sintered in a high vacuum atmosphere furnace at 850℃ to 1050℃ for 1 hour after debinding. The specimens were analyzed for permeability using a capillary flow porometer, porosity was determined by applying Archimedes’ law and microstructure was observed using SEM.

Opis:
Purpose This paper presents an overview on some ceramic materials capable of achieving in-situ reinforcements in Al/Al-alloy metal matrix composites (MMCs) during laser processing. It also presents perspective on further exploitation of the in-situ reinforcement capabilities for high quality MMCs feedstock material development. Design/methodology/approach The approach utilized in writing this paper encompasses the review of relevant literature on additive manufacturing (AM) of MMCs. Findings It is widely accepted that the in-situ reinforcement approach has proven to be more advantageous than the ex-situ approach. Though there are still some challenges like the formation of detremental phases and the evaporation of low melting temperature elements, the in-situ reinforcement approach can be used to tailor design composite powder feedstock materials for the AM of MMCs. The preprocessing or tailor-designing in-situ metal matrix composite powder before laser melting into desired components holds more promises for metal additive manufacturing. Practical implications The need for the development of MMCs powder feedstock that can be directly fabricated using suitable AM technique without prior powder processing like blending or mechanical alloying has not yet been addressed Therefore, having a pre-processed in-situ reinforced MMC feedstock powder can encourage easy fabrication of MMC and other advantages of AM technologies powder recycling. Originality/value The idea explained in this article is relevant to materials development for AM processing of metal matrix composite. This paper has pointed out future trends for MMCs materials feedstock powder development and new ideas for further exploitation of MMCs and AM technologies. The advantages of tailor-designing composite powders other than merely mixing them has been emphasized.

Small wind turbines are mostly designed for strong and medium wind regions, which are scaled by manufacturers based on similarity rules. However, the inland region represents a low wind region where the commercially available blades are not profitable. In this work, a rotor blade was designed for these wind conditions and further performance improvement of the turbine was generated by self-adaptive adjustment of the blades to the variable wind loads. This adaptation is achieved by a ply structure that exhibits bending-torsion coupling. The tooling for the production of the GFRP rotor blades was manufactured using a large-format 3D extrusion printer.
