Opis:
The development of fracture processes in selected Carboniferous rocks from the Upper Silesian Coal Basin is described, with particular regard to the behaviour of rock specimens in the post-failure stage. The fracture processes were monitored using the stress-strain relations, coupled with acoustic emission, recorded during loading. Energy accumulation and dissipation phenomena were observed during rock loading. Cracking was recorded on the stress-strain curves as deformation loops, accompanied by significant stress decreases, and as cyclic increases in acoustic emission activity. Observing and analysing stages of high acoustic emission and stress drops enabled determination of three ways ("schemes") in which fracture originated and developed during the post-critical stage. Scheme I is damage and movement of grains and rock cement, scheme II is destruction of single rock grains of particular resistance, and scheme III is a dislocational and slide deformation of the rock medium.

Opis:
The high costs of using skilled operators in production processes has built a demand for reduced manning, 'lights out machining' manufacture. Process monitoring systems have become a widely researched area in recent years since there is a need for intelligent systems to replace the manual intervention in existing processes. Furthermore, using modern sensors and signal processing techniques, monitoring systems can obtain more informatio about a process and therefore reduce costs further though maximised life of cutting tools, optimised cutting parameters and reduced scrap or re-work. With many application areas available, such as tool condition monitoring, chatter avoidance or feedback control of cutting parameters, it is not always apparent what the key aspects required by an intelligent monitoring system are. In addition, different machining processes have different demands and limitations for monitoring. This paper considers an analytical approach to define the requirements of a monitoring system. A process failure mode effect analysis (FMEA) is carried out to determine the weaknesses of current production processes. From this analysis, the relationships between failures, causes and effects can be used to populate conditional relationships between process faults and sensor signal features in a monitoring system.

Opis:
Water jet milling process is a new emerging technology with many interesting applications. Low cutting forces, no thermal distortion, process flexibility and ability to machine difficult to cut materials make it very attractive for many technological operations. However, its wider application is hindered by lack of proper solutions of process monitoring that would allow accurate control of the material removal process. The research contributions so far focused on use of acoustic emission, thus the purpose of this paper is an evaluation of the proposed strategies and analysis of applicability of acoustic emission for this purpose. An extensive amount of AE data was collected during waterjet machining with various feed rates, abrasive flows, and pump pressures, and analyzed with the aim to determine whether there exists any feature of the AE signal correlated with under- and over abrasion. Monitoring and control of removal rate is possible only if it is possible to discriminate between AE signal samples originating from different states of the abrasive process. In this paper I present results based on extensive one-way ANOVA study of the AE samples, showing, that the standard AE signal features proposed in the literature the energy and statistics of the AE signal do not allow such discrimination, and are not suitable to monitor abnormalities of the abrasive process. The research covers also principle component analysis of the AE signal energy performed in the aim to study if there exists any subset of the energy allowing better discrimination between the investigated process states.

Opis:
The article presents the association of the output signals of the grinding process with the machining parameters. The article focuses on assessing the suitability of grinding force signal and acoustic signal acquisition for different process conditions. In the first part of the article the kinematic contact of abrasive grain with the workpiece analysis was carried out. By analogy to the micro-cutting process, geometric analyses are presented and the process parameters that have a major impact on the grinding zone load are indicated. Analytically it has been shown that elementary grinding speeds (wheel and workpiece speed) and grinding depth have a significant effect on recorded signal values. The work also presents a set of factors and phenomena that are sources of acoustic emission impulses in the grinding process. For a selected range of grinding parameters, an experimental verification was performed. The article presents the highly correlated relationship between grain penetration depth (maximum uncut chip thickness) and grinding force components, as well as the effective value of acoustic emission. The output signals of the grinding process were also compared, indicating the advantage of the acoustic emission signal above the grinding force in terms of the reaction speed (and lag) of the sensors to the phenomena occurring in the grinding zone.

Opis:
The article presents an experimental stand to assess the state of punch in the process of sheet blanking. Blanking trials were carried out on an eccentric press. During all the trials, there were recorded signals of acoustic emission (AE) that accompanied the process of blanking. For the recorded AE signals, the methodology of data preparation and analysis was presented. On that basis, the results of the assessment of the state of the punch were presented, and they employed five methods of visualization: Andrews curves, Principal Components Analysis, Linear Discriminant Analysis, a modified method of Stochastic Neighbor Embedding and Sammon Mapping. The aim of the work was to assess the possibility of using visualization methods to predict the condition of the tool on the basis of acoustic emission signals in processes carried out in extremely short times.

Opis:
The paper proposes a strategy for analysis procedure during the conformity assessment of changes that occur between two signals or parameters measured at the investigated process output. The presented idea is an alternative to the traditional statistical method based on determining the correlation. The condition for correct application of the proposed assessment of compliance is recording the signals in a chronological and synchronous way. The method is based on determining the degree of similarity between the elementary lines creating a full course of the compared signals. For each line linking adjacent measurement points there is determined the slope angle and direction in relation to the axis. The similarity rate between any two signals is built based on weight assessment. The conventional methods for determining approximations can give a large error for estimated approximations (understate result) in case of repeated changes of direction of the parameter values in time domain. Such changes cause the accumulation of points in groups on the regression plot. The developed method introduces a strategy to consider this type of behavior. It can be expected that this method can be successfully used to describe correlations between the output signals parameters. It seems to be more appropriate than estimation of the correlation coefficient for non cause-effect relationships. This method was used for analysis of the relationships between the output signal values in the grinding process. Its effectiveness was proved and the important features of co-existing phenomena in the grinding zone were shown .
