The analysis of fuel injection processes in diesel engines showed the convergence of physical parameters affecting the mean diameter of the Sauter SMD (selected as a spray quality parameter) of the atomized fuel droplets and the parameters of the acoustic signal emission originating from the spring waves accompanying the atomization process. In experimental studies, the laser diffraction method was used to measure the atomization quality with the Malvern Spraytec device. For the acoustic signal recording and processing there was used the measurement set with a Fujicera 1045S sensor. The correlation between the values of the Sauter diameter and the energy of the acoustic signal has been obtained on the basis of which a method has been developed to assess the quality of fuel atomization in compression ignition engines by measuring the acoustic signal recorded during the fuel injection process.

The paper presents preliminary studies of a slide bearing operation by using an acoustic emission. These studies were designed to test the usability of this method for the diagnosis and monitoring of bearings in marine drive system (in particular, stern tube bearing). This paper proposes a method of testing the operating status of the slide bearing using acoustic emission. It discusses the research station, where the study was conducted. The authors paid special attention to the impact of rotation speed of the shaft journal bearing sliding to change some parameters of the acoustic emission signal. The gathered results were analysed and it was evaluated how the rotational speed of the shaft journal affects the individual signal parameters of acoustic emission. Additionally, the sensitivity of the method was evaluated. The article describes: the basics of testing with using the acoustic emission, parameters of the acoustic signal (the acoustic emission burst count, arrival time, duration time, signal amplitude, signal energy and RMS) and the equipment necessary for measurements by using this method. This method, unlike the ultrasonic testing detects only the active wave source, and it is very sensitive to detect changes in the moment when the installation is operating under load. It proposes to use the acoustic emission method to study operational conditions of a slide bearing. Slide bearings are used in many constructions of mechanisms, machines and equipment. They are a strategic element of their design and their improper work leads to the machine damage in a very short period of time, which automatically excludes it from further exploitation. For this reason, the correct assessment of the technical condition of slide bearing and knowledge of the current operating conditions of the slide bearing are extremely important (particularly in the case of bearings in marine propulsion system).

W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję systemu diagnostyki procesu szlifowania uzębień kół walcowych metodą Nilesa z wykorzystaniem emisji akustycznej, jako sygnału diagnostycznego. Celem diagnostyki jest wykrywanie powstawania uszkodzeń termicznych szlifowanych kół zębatych. Przeprowadzono wstępne badania doświadczalne oraz modelowe i zaprezentowano otrzymane wyniki. Opracowano metodę analizy i przetwarzania rejestrowanego sygnału. Zaprezentowano otrzymane przebiegi sygnału AE poddane procesowi przetwarzania.
The paper presents the concept of a diagnostic system of the generating gear grinding process of cylindrical gear wheels with acoustic emission as a diagnostic signal. The purpose of this diagnostic is detection of formation of thermal defects in grinding gears. Due to the complex kinematics of the grinding process causing the change in a cross-section of the cutting layer on each envelope pass there was developed a cutting layer mathematical model. The mathematical description of a grinding wheel and grinding teeth profile is given. There were determined the values of cutting layer mathematical model geometric parameters in the individual envelope passes. Then, correlation studies on a tangential force and acoustic emission were performed and get the correlation coefficient R2> 0.9 was obtained. The dependence for determining the maximum thermal power density was derived. An experimental setup and recorded signal processing scheme are presented. The method for analysis and processing of the recorded signal in time and frequency domain was developed based on literature and scientific studies. The worked out model and scientific investigations allowed developing a concept of diagnostic of the gear grinding based on acquisition and processing of the acoustic emission signal. This system will allow the detection of grinding teeth thermal damage whose formation influences the selected AE signal parameters. There are presented the statistical parameters of AE signals, which reveal a correlation with the formation of thermal stresses. In addition, the are shown the recorded AE signal waveforms after processing.

The presented research results specify the frequencies of an acoustic emission (AE) signal connected with phenomena occurring in the injection system of a diesel engine. From the time-frequency analysis the spectrum density was determined for a phenomenon or changes caused by the wear or damage of a selected injector component.

The experimental results of acoustic emission signals application to the investigation of the fuel injection system of a medium-speed marine diesel engine are presented. The introduced studies were confined to the phenomenon of the injection process. The features extracted from the raw acoustic emission signal were used to condition the monitoring of the main process of the injection system. The advantage of AE application in comparison to traditional methods is that the non-intrusive nature of the sensors can result in reduced set up times and cost.
W artykule zaprezentowano fragment prowadzonych przez autora badań układów wtryskowych silników okrętowych średnich mocy. Badano zjawiska zachodzące w układzie wtryskowym z wykorzystaniem sygnałów emisji akustycznej EA (znanej w lit. ang. jako acoustic emission lub stress wave emission). Za pomocą "czystego sygnału źródłowego" EA można w dokładny sposób określić procesy związane z pracą układu wtryskowego oraz układu wymiany czynnika roboczego (np. otwieranie/zamykanie zaworów dolotowego i wydechowego). Analizując sygnał pochodzący z układu wtryskowego (pulsacje I zmiany sygnału EA) wnioskować można o stanie układu iglica-prowadnica wtryskiwacza, początkach zacierania się iglicy, zmianie ciśnienia podiglicowego we wtryskiwaczu, a także o niewłaściwej pracy pompy wtryskowej. Istotną zaletą stosowanej przez autora metody jest to, że podłączenie czujnika do układu odbywa się bez jakiejkolwiek ingerencji w proces.

W artykule przedstawiono empiryczne modele wybranych parametrów wyjściowych procesu szlifowania powierzchni płaskich stali NC10 z zastosowaniem ściernicy z ziarnami elektrokorundu szlachetnego 99A. Dwuparametryczne modele regresyjne opracowano dla: chropowatości powierzchni, składowych siły szlifowania oraz sygnału emisji akustycznej. Modele te pozwalają na wybór optymalnych parametrów procesu szlifowania ze względu na wartość składowych siły oraz emisję fal naprężeń występujących w strefie obróbki, jak i uzyskiwaną jakość powierzchni przedmiotu. Funkcje mogą być zastosowane do weryfikacji modeli symulacyjnych lub w celu uniknięcia ewentualnych defektów termicznych powierzchni przedmiotu obrobionego i uzyskania zakładanej dokładności i powtarzalności obróbki.
The article presents the empirical models of selected output parameters of the flat surface grinding process of steel NC10 with the use of grinding wheels with electrocorundum grains 99A. Two-parameter regression models were developed for: surface roughness, grinding force components and acoustic emission signal. These models allow to select the optimal parameters of the grinding process due to the value of the force and emission of the stress waves in the grinding zone and to obtain assumed surface quality of workpiece. These functions can be also used to verify simulation models or to avoid any thermal defects on machined surface or to obtain the assumed accuracy and repeatability processing.

A computer measurement system, designed and built by authors, dedicated to location and description of partial discharges (PD) in oil power transformers examined by means of the acoustic emission (AE) method is presented. The measurement system is equipped with 8 measurement channels and ensures: monitoring of signals, registration of data in real time within a band of 25-1000 kHz in laboratory and real conditions, basic and advanced analysis of recorded signals. The basic analysis carried out in the time, frequency and time-frequency domains deals with general properties of the AE signals coming from PDs. The advanced analysis, performed in the discrimination threshold domain, results in identification of signals coming from different acoustic sources as well as location of these sources in the examined transformers in terms of defined by authors descriptors and maps of these descriptors on the side walls of the tested transformer tank. Examples of typical results of laboratory tests carried out with the use of the built-in measurement system are presented.

Acoustic emission is one of the effective techniques used for the condition monitoring of rolling element bearings. Contamination is one of the major reasons for bearing early failure due to presence of solid particle in lubricant grease. In most cases, outer race is stationary and the inner race is attached to the rotating assembly. The lubrication is very essential for the bearing to perform under various demanding conditions. The main aim of this project is to analyze the effect of contamination of lubricant by solid particles on the dynamic behavior of rolling bearing. Green sand at three concentration levels 5%, 15%, 25% and different particle sizes 75 μm, 106 μm and 150μm is used to contaminate the lubricant. Experimental tests have been performed for different load and speed condition in good and contaminated ball bearings lubricated with grease. The trends in the amount of AE waves affected by the contamination of the grease were determined. Acoustic emission signals were analyzed in terms of RMS, kurtosis, and peak-peak.

The main problem with using acoustic emission to control and diagnostics of composite materials and products from composite materials is the interpretation and identification of recorded information during development processes occurring in the material’s structure. This is due to the high sensitivity of the acoustic emission method to various influencing factorsand the practical absence of acoustic radiation models. To solve this problem, it is necessary to determine the influence of various factors on acoustic radiation parameters. In this study, based on the acoustic radiation developed model we simulate the influence of one parameter characterizing composite properties on acoustic emission energy parameters during composite material destruction by shear forces according to the von Mises criterion. Simulation of acoustic radiation under given conditions makes it possible to determine the patterns of acoustic emission signals energy parameters changes and their sensitivity to changes of influencing factor, as well as to obtain mathematical expressions for describing obtained patterns. The results of this case study can be useful for developing methods of control, monitoring and diagnostics of composite materials and products made from composite materials.

A fault diagnostics system of three-phase induction motors was implemented. The implemented system was based on acoustic signals of three-phase induction motors. A feature extraction step was performed using SMOFS-20-EXPANDED (shortened method of frequencies selection-20-Expanded). A classification step was performed using 3 classifiers: LDA (Linear Discriminant Analysis), NBC (Naive Bayes Classifier), CT (Classification Tree). An analysis was carried out for incipient states of three-phase induction motors measured under laboratory conditions. The author measured and analysed the following states of motors: healthy motor, motor with one faulty rotor bar, motor with two faulty rotor bars, motor with faulty ring of squirrel-cage. Measured and analysed states were caused by natural degradation of parts of the machine. The efficiency of recognition of the analysed states was good. The proposed method of fault diagnostics can find application in protection of three-phase induction motors.

This paper presents the results of a preliminary study on simplified diagnosis of osteo-arthritis of the knee joint based on generated vibroacoustic processes. The analysis was based on acoustic signals recorded in a group of 50 people, half of whom were healthy, and the other half – people with previously confirmed degenerative changes. Selected discriminants of the signals were determined and statistical analysis was performed to allow selection of optimal discriminants used at a later stage as input to the classifier. The best results of classification using artificial neural networks (ANN) of RBF (Radial Basis Function) and MLP (Multilevel Perceptron) types are presented. For the problem involving the classification of cases into one of two groups HC (Healthy Control) and OA (Osteoarthritis) an accuracy of 0.9 was obtained, with a sensitivity of 0.885 and a specificity of 0.917. It is shown that vibroacoustic diagnostics has great potential in the non-invasive assessment of damage to joint structures of the knee.

Water jet milling process is a new emerging technology with many interesting applications. Low cutting forces, no thermal distortion, process flexibility and ability to machine difficult to cut materials make it very attractive for many technological operations. However, its wider application is hindered by lack of proper solutions of process monitoring that would allow accurate control of the material removal process. The research contributions so far focused on use of acoustic emission, thus the purpose of this paper is an evaluation of the proposed strategies and analysis of applicability of acoustic emission for this purpose. An extensive amount of AE data was collected during waterjet machining with various feed rates, abrasive flows, and pump pressures, and analyzed with the aim to determine whether there exists any feature of the AE signal correlated with under- and over abrasion. Monitoring and control of removal rate is possible only if it is possible to discriminate between AE signal samples originating from different states of the abrasive process. In this paper I present results based on extensive one-way ANOVA study of the AE samples, showing, that the standard AE signal features proposed in the literature the energy and statistics of the AE signal do not allow such discrimination, and are not suitable to monitor abnormalities of the abrasive process. The research covers also principle component analysis of the AE signal energy performed in the aim to study if there exists any subset of the energy allowing better discrimination between the investigated process states.

The purpose of this work is to distinguish between Acoustic Emission (AE) signals coming from mechanical friction and AE signals coming from concrete cracking, recorded during fourteen seismic simulations conducted with the shaking table of the University of Granada on a reinforced concrete slab supported on four steel columns. To this end, a particular criterion is established based on the Root Mean Square of the AE waveforms calculated in two different temporal windows. This criterion includes a parameter calculated by optimizing the correlation between the mechanical energy dissipated by the specimen (calculated by means of measurements with accelerometers and displacement transducers) and the energy obtained from the AE signals recorded by low-frequency piezoelectric sensors located on the specimen. The final goal of this project, initiated four years ago, is to provide a reliable evaluation of the level of damage of Reinforced Concrete specimens by means of AE signals to be used in future Structural Health Monitoring strategies involving RC structures.

The main purpose of the presented research is to investigate the partial discharge (PD) phenomenon variability under long-term AC voltage with particular consideration of the selected physical quantities changes while measured and registered by the acoustic emission method (AE). During the research a PD model source generating surface discharges is immersed in the brand new insulation mineral oil. Acoustic signals generated by the continuously occurred PDs within 168 hours are registered. Several qualitative and quantitative indicators are assigned to describe the PD variability in time. Furthermore, some longterm characteristics of the applied PD model source in mineral oil, are also presented according to acoustic signals emitted by the PD. Finally, various statistical tools are applied for the results analysis and presentation. Despite there are numerous contemporary research papers dealing with long-term PD analysis, such complementary and multiparametric approach has not been presented so far, regarding the presented research. According to the presented research from among all assigned indicators there are discriminated descriptors that could depend on PD long-term duration. On the grounds of the regression models analysis there are discovered trends that potentially allow to apply the results for modeling of the PD variability in time using the acoustic emission method. Subsequently such an approach may potentially support the development and extend the abilities of the diagnostic tools and maintenance policy in electrical power industry.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of the measurements of microindentation using Vickers' indenter. The research was carried out with the system: the Cr layer layer deposited on silicon substrate and glass substrate. At the same time as the measurement of microindentation acoustic emission signals were recorded. The results of microindentation forces in the form of load-displacement curves and registered AE-time characteristics of the AE signals were compared with the SEM images of indentation. During the measurements, "burst" effects were observed as discontinuities of loading curve, that correlate with AE impulses. Rise of the maximal load resulted in the increase of damage and caused multiplication of AE pulses. Due to the fact the Cr layer was thin, most AE pulses were generated during the damaging of Si substrate. During the microindentation on Cr-glass system the transient AE signals were not registered.
W pracy zostały przedstawione wyniki pomiarów mikrotwardości z zastosowaniem wgłębnika typu Vickers. Badania przeprowadzono na próbkach z warstwą Cr na podłożu krzemowym i szklanym. Podczas pomiarów mikrotwardości jednocześnie rejestrowano generowane sygnały emisji akustycznej. Następnie porównano wyniki w postaci krzywej obciążania oraz sygnały emisji akustycznej i obrazy SEM odcisków wgłębnika. Zaobserwowane na krzywej obciążania nieciągłości zostały powiązane z pojawieniem się impulsów EA. Wzrost maksymalnego obciążenia wywołał zwiększenie liczby impulsów EA, odpowiednio do stopnia uszkodzenia materiału. Z analizy wykresów wynika, iż większość rejestrowanych uszkodzeń zachodziła w podłożu krzemowym. Pomiary mikrotwardości warstwy Cr na podłożu szklanym nie wywołały impulsowych sygnałów EA.
