    A restrictive anti-abortion law is in force in Poland. However, many people terminate pregnancy in cases other than those specified in the Act. Public discourse on this subject is dominated by philosophical and legal issues, and it lacks the voices of those who terminated the pregnancy. Abortion is often presented as a sad necessity, as always difficult or traumatic. I conducted research on describing own abortion experiences by people from Facebook pro-choice groups. 99 respondents who had 102 abortions completed an anonymous online questionnaire. From the material of answers, I selected categories that were used to analyze the results of the study: positive emotions, negative emotions, pregnancy as a burden, good experience, difficulty experience, stigmatization, support. It turned out that the experiences of termination of pregnancy were diverse. Respondents, describing their experiences, discussed topics rarely present in the discourse, such as the fact that abortion can be a good experience.

    W niniejszym artykule analizuję współczesny dyskurs nauk społecznych pod kątem obecności w nim badań nad przerywaniem ciąży. Aborcja jest często występującym zabiegiem medycznym, a jednocześnie stanowi jeden z najgorętszych przedmiotów debaty publicznej angażujący środowiska religijne, feministyczne i polityczne. W artykule szukam odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy popularność tego tematu w sferze publicznej znajduje odzwierciedlenie w dyskursie nauk społecznych. Interesuje mnie to, w jaki sposób skupienie dyskursu na konkretnych perspektywach badania aborcji – indywidualnej, społecznej i instytucjonalnej, a także dyskursywnej i metodologicznej – konstruuje „socjologię aborcji”. Analiza dyskursu na temat aborcji pokazuje, że badania nad aborcją w najbardziej prestiżowych czasopismach odnoszą się głównie do świata anglosaskiego. Ponadto badania aborcji stanowią niewielki procent artykułów w analizowanych czasopismach z zakresu nauk społecznych, a dominująca perspektywa to badanie aborcji przez pryzmat opinii społecznych na jej temat. Najmniej uwagi poświęca się natomiast perspektywie indywidualnej i doświadczeniom kobiet, które przerwały ciążę.
    The article herein analyzes the contemporary discourse of social sciences with regard to the presence of research on abortion within it. Abortion is a regular medical practice in the world. At the same time, it is one of the most controversial yet vivid topics of public discussions, engaging religious, feminist, and political circles. In my paper, I am looking for an answer to the question about whether the popularity of this subject in the public sphere is reflected within the discourse of social sciences. I am interested in how focusing the discourse on particular research perspectives – individual, social, institutional, and methodological – constructs ‘the sociology of abortion.’ The analysis of the discourse on abortion shows that research on abortion in the most prestigious academic journals concerns mostly the Anglo-American societies. Moreover, research on abortion constitutes a small percentage of all articles published in the analyzed social-sciences journals, while the dominant perspective involves researching abortion through the prism of social opinions. The least attention is paid to researching abortion from the individual perspective that involves the experiences of those women who have had abortion.

    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wniosków z analizy tekstów na transparentach (i innych nośnikach) niesionych w czasie protestów, które wybuchły po wyroku Trybunału Konstytucyjnego w sprawie dopuszczalności aborcji. W badaniach wykorzystano techniki i metody multimodalnej analizy dyskursu, wyrastającej z semiotyki społecznej oraz wirtualnej etnografii. Autor skupił się na strategiach dyskursywnych, które stosowali protestujący. W tekście przeanalizowany został własny kod demonstrantów. Wykazano, że przekazy te są silnie intertekstualne i innowacyjne, spełniały także funkcję ludyczną i fatyczną. W artykule omówiono także funkcję wulgaryzmów, których stosowanie jest według autora celową strategią. Charakter przekazów politycznych sprawiał jednak, że pewna grupa odbiorców była wykluczona z tej komunikacji politycznej, nie mogąc zrozumieć makrosądu transparentu.
    This paper presents an analysis of the banners and placards used by protesters following the ruling of the Constitutional Tribunal on the legality of abortion. Multimodal discourse analysis methods, derived from social semiotics and virtual ethnography, were used in the research process. The author focuses on the discursive strategies employed by the protesters. The paper analyses the protesters’ internal code. It was found that the messages used were strongly intertextual and innovative while being both ludic and phatic. The paper also discusses the use of profanity which, the author claims, was part of a deliberate strategy. The style of the political messages, however, contributed to a part of the audience being alienated due to their inability to comprehend the macro propositions of the messages.

    Opis:
    References to fear are often associated with narratives created by right-wing parties and media, especially while talking about issues such as gender, LGBTQIA+ or abortion. However, similar practices can be found in centre-liberal discourse, proving that the creation and reproduction of the dialectic of fear can apply to all agents, no matter their political affiliation. The article aims to challenge popular academic perceptions of the sources of fear by proposing a counterperspective that means to shift perception on agents of polarisation. Used examples focus on contemporary Polish mainstream centre-liberal newspapers which reproduce fear in their narrative, adding to both local and worldwide phenomena of political polarisation and radicalisation.

    Aborcja to temat obecny w polskim dyskursie społecznym, w tym politycznym, medycznym i prawnym, w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym. Temat ten był po wielokroć przedmiotem zagorzałych dyskusji, nierzadko ukazując skrajnie przeciwstawne poglądy, także na łamach periodyków będących w obiegu naukowym w dziedzinie nauk medycznych i prawnych. Argumenty przedstawiane zarówno przez jedną, jak i drugą stronę były bardzo podobne do tych, które pojawiają się w polemikach na ten temat w dzisiejszych czasach. Podziemie aborcyjne także wykazywało się dużą aktywnością, pomimo regulacji prawnych penalizujących przerywanie ciąży bez wskazań normatywnych określonych w ustawie.
    Abortion is a topic that was present in the Polish social discourse of the interwar period, touching upon politics, law and medicine. The topic was a subject of heated debate, and it has showcased radically opposing views in printed press, but it was also present in scientific periodicals focused on medicine and law. All the arguments presented then are very similar to those we can see today on all sides. The abortion underground back then was quite active, despite the legal regulations that penalized unlawful abortions.

    W trakcie protestów przeciwko decyzji Trybunału Konstytucyjnego z dn. 22 października 2020 r. popularne stało się określanie młodych, biorących udział w protestach kobiet mianem „Julek”. Autor argumentuje, używając danych z rejestru PESEL oraz doniesień z badań sondażowych, że pojawienie się tego określenia ma swoje podstawy w popularności tego imienia w grupie demograficznej 13-20, a także w wartościach bliskich młodym Polkom i Polakom. Autor zwraca uwagę na rolę kategorii płci w wartościowaniu wydarzeń społecznych, która w dyskursie publicznym objawia się emblematami takimi jak „Julka”.
    During the protests against the decision of the Constitutional Tribunal of October 22nd, 2020, calling young and vocal women by the name „Julka” became popular. The author argues, using data from the PESEL register and reports from surveys, that the appearance of this term is based on the popularity of the name in the demographic group 13-20, as well as on values shared by young Poles. The author draws attention to the role of the gender category in the evaluation of social events, which in the public discourse manifests itself with emblems such as „Julka”.

    The topic of abortion is widely discussed in the Polish public sphere since early 90s. Religious actors have been active participants in this debate but sociologists rarely look at the role of religion in formulating discourse on abortion. The goal of this article is to answer the question of how religion is present in the discourse on abortion in Poland and what are social consequences of that. We analyze arguments used in discourse on abortion in the documents of the Polish Episcopate Conference and selected Polish liberal and Catholic weeklies. We draw conclusions about the vision of religion presented by selected opinion-forming circles. Documents of the Episcopate and “Gość Niedzielny” present absolute opposition to abortion. Abortion is defined as “the end of life”. The main religious argument is the reference to God as the creator of man who is the only entity able to decide about the end of human life. The social consequence of the assumption that God is a source of morality is an opinion that the best mechanism for ensuring the well-being of the state is to base the law on religious foundations. The religious argument in “Tygodnik Powszechny” is more nuanced. Authors refer to the social context of abortion and the complexity of women’s decisions about abortion. Liberal weeklies strongly oppose the implementation of more restrictive abortion law. The social consequence of criticism of religion is the vision of society as independent and the postulate of a state independent of religion. Religion is believed to be non-functional as the base of morality.
    Temat aborcji jest szeroko dyskutowany w polskiej sferze publicznej od czasu transformacji ustrojowej. Chociaż aktorzy religijni są aktywnymi uczestnikami tej debaty, socjologowie rzadko badają rolę religii w jej kształtowaniu. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie o to, w jaki sposób religijne argumenty są używane do uzasadniania stanowisk zajmowanych w dyskursie o aborcji. Na podstawie porównawczej analizy argumentacji i sposobów komunikowania religii w dyskursie o aborcji, w dokumentach Konferencji Episkopatu Polski i wybranych liberalnych i katolickich tygodnikach opinii wyciągamy wnioski dotyczące tego, jakie wizje religii prezentują wybrane środowiska opiniotwórcze i jak widzą ich społeczne konsekwencje. W dokumentach Episkopatu i w publikacjach „Gościa Niedzielnego” sprzeciw wobec aborcji ma charakter absolutny, a podstawowym argumentem religijnym jest odwołanie do Boga jako twórcy człowieka i uzasadnienie świętości życia. Konsekwencją społeczną jest w tych dokumentach przekonanie, że najlepszym mechanizmem zapewnienia pomyślności państwa, właściwego prawa i społecznej moralności jest oparcie prawa stanowionego na religijnych podstawach. Argumentacja religijna w Tygodniku Powszechnym, przy sprzeciwie wobec aborcji, jest bardziej zniuansowana i różnorodna. Występują odwołania do kontekstu społecznego i złożoności decyzji o aborcji. W tygodnikach liberalnych dominuje zdecydowany sprzeciw wobec dążenia do zaostrzenia prawa w kwestii dopuszczalności aborcji. Konsekwencją społeczną krytyki religii jest wizja społeczeństwa jako samosterownego i postulat państwa niezależnego od religii.

    The article presents selected problems relevant for the contentious issue of abortion and related discourses indicating that one of the characteristic features of abortion discourse is its mediatization. The author aims to characterize the constraints on abortion discourses and the varied environments in which different types of such discourses emerge. Abortion discourses are sociolinguistically differentiated and may exhibit different styles and modes of expression. Although they share the scope of the subject matter involved as in all cases they are centered on abortion-related problems, the field of discourse in each case is defined by the nature of the communicative situation in which a particular discourse is embedded. All abortion discourses are underlined with particular assumptions concerning the nature of human life and its beginning, as well as the issues of the dignity and liberty of the human person. The author suggests that what really hampers abortion discourses and prevents their participants from reaching a consensus is the fact that people who engage in such disputes are faced with the incommensurability of the values which translate into decisive factors and the final arguments used by interacting discussants. Another problem is posed by the fact that the two extreme positions in the debate are formulated with the use of different styles and registers, which results in the clash of asymmetric discourses. Finally, it is not insignificant that subjectively important values are much varied and that they must coexist with two main sets or “families” of abortion-oriented fundamental values present in the polarised camps.
