Opis:
Muranów, or about land clearing The article is a review of “Festung Warschau” by Elżbieta Janicka which maps the clash between the recently built monuments celebrating Jewish or Polish places of martyrdom from the times of Second World War. Janicka walks through the streets of the former Jewish neighbourhoods of Warsaw; she photographs and discusses the new plaques, crosses, monuments, and other forms of public marking of history on the buildings, squares and streets. She convincingly shows that the new historical commemorative signs of Polish martyrdom are often placed in the sites that were marked by Jewish resistance or suffering, and that the marks of Polish suffering are rarely linked materially to the site. The new monuments obstruct and hide the past presence of Warsaw Jews and, by submerging their past, create a new vision of ethnically cleansed history of Warsaw, especially in its relation to Second World War. The review applauds the book and rejects some of the criticism against it.

The article analyzes the memoirs of the Warsaw Uprising of 1944, written by one of the most prominent Ukrainian bibliologists, librarians and bibliographers – Lev Ustymovych Bykowski (1895–1992), who also joined the librarianship of Czechoslovakia and Poland and served as director of the Warsaw Public Library in the most dramatic moments in the history of the Polish capital – the anti-Nazi uprising. Among the figures mentioned in the memoir are: Janina Peszynska (1887-1949) – head of the Arts department of the Public Library and an active participant in the Warsaw Uprising; Regina Tchaikovsky – daughter of famous writer Alexander Sventokhovsky; Professor Jerzy Kowalski (1893-1948) – classical philologist, writer, professor of Lviv and Wroclaw universities; writer Maria Dombrovska (1889-1960); Mayor of Warsaw Julian Kulski; Prince Victor Viktorovich Kochubey (1893-1953); former minister of UPR Stanislav Stempovsky – former minister of UPR and others. In the context of local lore, the events around the Warsaw Public Library and the situation on Marshalkowska, Koszykova, Poznanska, Emilia Plater, Goza, etc. are most noted. There is also a lot of evidence in the memoir of Warsaw’s cultural institutions and their condition after the uprising.

Opis:
The article describes the motif of women and war in three novels by Sylwia Chutnik (born 1979): Kieszonkowy atlas kobiet (Pocket Atlas of Women) 2008, Dzidzia (Diddums) 2009 and Cwaniary (The Hustlers) 2012. Drawing from the context of modern Western studies, reflections on these works concern the relationship between gender and war, assuming that it grants an active and heroic role to men while putting women in the role of civilian victims, and in doing so, it consolidates the traditional social hierarchy. Even though the history of war contradicts such stereotypes and abounds in evidence of women’s courage, both as civilians and soldiers, the society – according to scholars – seems to reproduce wartime division of gender roles as justification for the cultural hierarchy of gender. This pushes women’s experience and memory of war to the margins of collective memory. Sylwia Chutnik portraits the women who participated in the Warsaw Uprising and depicts their lives after the war, rediscovering the (in)ability to build a women’s tradition of combat and to pass their wartime stories to daughters and granddaughters. She also shows the forgotten women’s memory of the Uprising: the terrible suffering of civilians, who often rebelled against military decisions. In her understanding, this memory forms an undertone in Polish culture, and has only recently been acknowledged by the so-called oral history.

The purpose of the article is to expose the civilian experience of the Warsaw Uprising, the event traditionally connected with the heroic military myth of the Polish nation. The main source is a non-published diary of Zofia Charytańska, ordinary citizen of Warsaw, who records the everyday life in the German- and later Russian-occupied city areas. Her diaries show the civilian perspective on the 1944 military operation, indicating at the same time the anxiety and guilt of an uninvolved observer. This individual experience is submerged in the broader historical and ideological context. It further extends the narrative about Praga, the city district east of the Vistula river, which did not participate in the Uprising and was “liberated” by the Soviet Army.

censorship in Polish People’s Republic
Opis:
Right from the beginning, the subject of the Warsaw Uprising was often manipulated or even entirely erased from public discourse under the Stalinist regime. It was only after the liberalization of culture and the easing of censorship-related repressions that the said topic returned in literature. The paper focuses on the censorship bureau’s approach to the image of the Uprising presented by writers. Moreover, it attempts to specify – on the basis of specific examples – the kind of content that was accepted, rejected or amended. The juxtaposition of censors’ documents and the content of the published works allows for the examination of the depth of censors’ interventions and their methods of manipulating historical facts. Those areas of special interest include: presentation of the division among the insurgents who were supposed to belong either to the brave ordinary soldiers or the passive leadership, as well as the attitude towards the People’s Army, the First Polish Army, the Home Army or the Red Army, with special regard for its passiveness during the Uprising.

The article focuses on the poetry collection Budowałam barykadę (Building a barricade) by Anna Świrszczyńska, published in 1974, thirty years after the Warsaw Uprising, which is the theme of the volume. During the past three decades, the author worked out an essential style that was free of pathos, objective, and close to the colloquial speech, which proved to be the only possible way of speaking about such dramatic events as those lived and observed during the uprising when the author was a field nurse helping the insurrectionists. Thanks to its stylistic discipline, the short poems of Budowałam barykadę are the most durable poetic witness of the Warsaw Uprising.

The Warsaw Uprising was a major World War II operation organized by the Polish resistance Home Army. It was planned for 1 September 1944. The start of the uprising in Warsaw spurred social resistance against the Nazi occupiers – people from various backgrounds joined the fighting. Among them were people born in Szadek and in the surrounding commune. The names identified so far include Janusz Laube, Jerzy Laube, Stefan Laube, Anna Meylert, by marriage Nawrot, Bogdan Sztolc, and Mieczysław Nowak, who lived in Szadek in the interwar period. They all survived the dramatic time of occupation in the capital, except for Mieczysław Nowak, killed by KL Gross-Rosen. They fought in the ranks of the battalion “Sokół”, Group “Chrobry II” and Group “Żbik”, having earlier participated in conspiratorial activity of Szare Szeregi (wartime Polish Scouting Association) and NSZ.

The Supreme National Tribunal, which operated in Poland between 1946 and 1948, tried 49 Hitlerite criminals who had committed crimes against Poland and Poles during World War II. It was tasked not only with bringing individual perpetrators to justice but also with publicizing these matters to the world. It was in effect the Polish equivalent of the Nuremberg Tribunal. However, the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising, including the Wola Massacre (Wola Slaughter), was not covered by these trials, even though initially The Tribunal planned to try Germans responsible for the crimes committed during the Uprising. In practice. these crimes were carefully omitted from the seven trials conducted by the Tribunal. Even when the high officials of the occupation administration in Warsaw were tried, the period of the Warsaw Uprising was not, as a rule, the subject were subsequently tried by the Polish common courts. The fact is that the then Polish authorities were not keen to publicize the martyrdom of those who had taken part in the Warsaw Uprising because this would have inevitably led to questions as to why USSR military forces did not come to the aid of the Warsaw residents being murdered by the Germans and also to what was happening to the Polish Home Army soldiers who had fought vigorously at that time and who, after the war, were subject to persecution by the new authorities installed in Poland by the Soviet Union. The Tribunal, whose task was to judge the perpetrators of the most significant German crimes, ceased its activities without even considering what was probably the largest single massacre of civilians in Europe during World War II, and the largest single act of extermination in the history of the Polish Nation: the Wola Massacre.

The article focuses on the memory practices activated in Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz’s Kinderszenen, an essay devoted to the Warsaw Uprising. The text refers to Klaus Theweleit’s Male Fantasies analyzing the language of male soldiers, and examines the work of the same linguistic logic which determines the way in which the events in the capital are presented. The Nazification of memory involves here the demonstration of obscenity of the uprising and recognizing it as constitutive to the national identity. The purpose of the text is to capture the relationship between shaping collective memory and creating “genogenic” imaginarium integrating the Polish community.

The Author examines the presentation of the German occupation at the Warsaw Rising Museum and in Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory in Krakow. Initially, she studies the space of these exhibitions and demonstrates that the Warsaw Rising Museum has some characteristics of reflective space, while the exhibition at the Schindler’s Factory is primarily a projective one. Then, she points out that both museums treat artefacts as illustrations of their stories, as a consequence of which they are simulations of the past rather than material testimonies of what had happened. Finally, the Author argues that the Warsaw Rising Museum primarily tells the story of glory of the Polish nation, while the Schindler Factory focuses on the social history. In conclusion the Author points out that none of the exhibitions breaks the existing taboos or offers a new approach to the past. Both museum stories perfectly reflect the shape of the Polish social memory of World War II. Differences in the way they present the past are a result of rooting each of the stories in different public debates that were conducted in Poland after 1989.

Feliks Badowski (born on 17th May 1923 in Warsaw) was a soldier who fought in ZWZ-AK (Union of Armed Struggle-Home Army). His account concerns his education and work, war experiences and life after the war. This witness describes in great detail his work in industry in occupied Warsaw and his struggle for independence in the frames of ZWZ-AK. He also mentions his studies within Towarzystwo Kursów Technicznych (Technical Courses Association). A vast part of the narrative is devoted to Feliks Badowski’s participation in the Warsaw Uprising – he tells us, amongst others, about preparations for armed resistance against the occupier, how the army units were organized in the first days of fighting, and about the attack on the citadel. A lot of focus is given to partisan activity in Kampinos Forest – the witness explains, for example, the structure of partisan forces, their help for the fighting Warsaw, sabotage actions and how they received deliveries by airdrops. This account gives us also some insight into the way the inhabitants of villages and towns near Warsaw perceived the Warsaw Uprising. Also, it relates the marching-out of partisan units and their way towards the Świętokrzyskie mountains, during which – near Żyrardów – they were defeated by Germans. A separate part of the narrative is devoted to reminiscences from post-war Wrocław – Feliks Badowski explains why he came to the Lower Silesia and pictures relations in his new place of work – Pafawag (Państwowa Fabryka Wagonów – National Rail Carriage Factory).

This essay is an analysis and interpretation of Bohdan Korzeniewski’s June 1963 staging of Forefathers’ Eve in the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow. Korzeniewski’s spectacle, named by Maria Czanerle ‘the most shocking thing ever done to Forefathers’ Eve’, with awe- -inspiring stage design by Tadeusz Brzozowski and Krzysztof Penderecki’s avant-garde music, did not earn a lasting place in the history of theatre. It received rather lukewarm reviews and did not gain the favour of actors, either. Despite being received enthusiastically by such distinguished critics as Marta Fik and Stanisław Marczak-Oborski, Korzeniewski’s Forefathers’ Eve has largely been forgotten. This essay is an attempt at reconstructing the performance based on the remaining theatrical copies, reviews and memories of those who collaborated on the production. The essay’s author poses the question about what part of Korzeniowski’s failure was due to the historical context and the impossibility to realize this concept in another reality an on another stage. As, indeed, Korzeniewski created his interpretation in 1953 and it was part of a secret ministry competition for the first postwar staging of Forefathers’ Eve. Analyzing the implicit signs present in the director’s concept, which refer to the reality of the war, occupation and Stalinist period, the author also asks how Polish romantic drama staging history would have unfolded if it was Korzeniewski and not Aleksander Bardini who staged Forefathers’ Eve in 1955 in the Polish Theatre in Warsaw.

Prezentuje wiele szczegółów i zdarzeń z tamtego okresu dotychczas mało znanych. Przedstawia sylwetki bohaterskich konstruktorów i producentów uzbrojenia i sprzętu wojskowego w warunkach konspiracji oraz w trakcie Powstania Warszawskiego.
The 70th anniversary of the Warsaw's Uprising is an occasion to memorise not only the combat activities but also their technical support organisation. The author as a participant of the Uprising described the organisation of a system supplying the ordnance to soldiers of Country Army, People's Army and Peasant's Battalions basing on his personal experience and other source data. There are presented some facts and details of that time which were not well known. There are many heroic people presented who developed and produced the ordnance pieces in conditions of conspiracy and during the Warsaw's Uprising.
