The article discusses the image of the United States depicted in Czesław Miłosz’s correspondence coming from the years 1945-1950. The author of the article refers to the circumstances that led the poet to taking up a job as a diplomat and analyses a variety of opinions on that decision circulating among both Polish and émigré writers. The letters discussed reflect the culture shock and the slow process of acclimatization that the poet went through; his way of perceiving and trying to understand America. The article also focuses on the role Miłosz played as a mediator  between the Old and the New Worlds, translating American literature into Polish and trying to popularize Polish culture in the US.

The process of Czech and Moravian immigration to Texas is a well-known phenomenon. Since 1848, tens of thousands decided to cross the ocean to seek a better future in the “Lone Star state.“ Although their history is well documented, there are still themes to be explored. Their religious activity and the connection it has created with their metropolis is one of them. The church and its institutions sent priests to America to attend to the immigrants in their mother tongue and helped them preserve their cultural identity. Furthermore, they organized the construction of their sacred places that would remind the parishioners of their home country. One example could be the famous painted churches still present in Texas today. This topic has not received proper attention from historians because it requires studying sources on both sides of the Atlantic. The presented contribution tries to change this unflattering fact using the microhistorical approach. Its aim is threefold. First, explain the historical dimension of the religious connection between the Czech and Moravian immigrants in Texas with their metropolis. Second, describe the sacred places of the immigrants, how they were built, what role they played in their everyday life, and how they established a bond with their country of origin. Third, what importance did the sacred places of the Czechs and Moravians have in preserving their language and cultural identity? The microhistorical approach demands the use of various and fragmented sources, and this study will be no exception. It will use archive material from Austria and the Czech Republic, principally the funds of the religious organizations that supported the immigrants in Texas, such as the Leopoldine Society. Furthermore, the article will use published contemporary personal recounts and secondary literature. The content of these sources will be critically analysed to answer the research questions and hopefully contribute to the theme of religion and its invaluable role in an immigrant society.

The article is based on an analysis of legal acts, documents and literature. Its purpose is to present the development of consumerism in the United States in four historic eras. The idea of consumers’ laws has been developed with particular stress on the president’s J.F. Kennedy speech of 15th March 1962 – Special Message to the Congress on Protecting the Consumer Interest. For the first time in the history, four consumers’ rights were named: the right to safety, the right to be informed, the right to choose and the right to be heard. Therefore United States are commonly recognized as the predecessor of the idea of consumerism.

This article is an attempt to analyze and interpret the evaluation of the politicians of the American Democratic Party in the period from the second half of the 19th century to 1945, which was conducted by representatives of the Austrian School. This article shows that the Democratic Party, from the political group which conforms to laissez faire, individual liberties, and the free trade was later to become a party, which support subsidies, “war for democracy” and the state-sponsored works. The account which was adopted by the representatives of the Austrian School was support for the market economy and personal liberties, and all violations of these issues have become of the subject of their criticism. In this article the author used an interpretative method and content analysis.

This paper reports on the recent revival of the Lemko Association (Lemko Soyuz) in North America, under the auspices of the Carpathian Institute, a US federal and Connecticut state recognized tax-exempt, non-profit, non-political, non-sectarian educational corporation. The Lemko Association, founded in 1929, had become essentially defunct by the end of 2009. Beginning in 2010, however, in a new location and new legal status it has been revived, publishing a quarterly, “Karpatska Rus’”, books, pamphlets and flags and arranging for lectures.

The purpose of this article was to introduce the possible future relations between China and the United States of America under Donald Trump’s presidency. The paper is divided into five sections: economy, real challenges, trade policy and industry, diplomacy. Each of them is introducing key issues in terms of the main topic. The secondary point of this article was to show the gravity of change after United States of America  election results in December 2016 and the impact of this event on American policy toward China. The main conclusion which arised from the article is: USA-China relations during upcoming decade are going to be eminently tensed that it was before. Trade policy, Taiwan, strategic rapprochement of the United States of America with such countries as India and Russia, as well as innovation race across many industries, will remain a point of contention. The future of Sino-US relations will probably depend mostly on the emerging administration of the 45th President of the United States of America.

The objective of this paper is to examine whether in the post-Cold War period the European approach to security policy is in fact different than the one of the United States of America, and why it is so. The author tries also to analyse what might be the impact of these differences on the transatlantic relationship and what consequences it might bring in the nearest future. After the description and definition of the term “security”, the author analyses the differences between the two approaches and refers to the arguments and viewpoints of different scholars. In conclusion an attempt to foresee the future of the EU – US security relations is undertaken. Celem artykułu jest zbadanie czy podejścia Unii Europejskiej i Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki do polityki bezpieczeństwa są rzeczywiście różne, jakie są tego powody i co z tego wynika. Oprócz samej charakterystyki obu aktorów stosunków międzynarodowych, jakimi są UE i USA, i analizy ich podejść, autor próbuje ustosunkować się do przytoczonych zdań i poglądów różnych znanych naukowców z dziedziny stosunków międzynarodowych. Zbadanie różnicy w podejściach do polityki bezpieczeństwa jest punktem wyjścia do próby oceny ich wpływu na relacje transatlantyckie i refleksji nad najbliższą przyszłością

One can hardly overestimate the meaning of freedom of speech in the European tradition. It dates back to the times of the ancient Greece, although it was only John Milton who wrote the first tract devoted to the subject in question. In his Areopagitica (1644), Milton skillfully defended the principle of a free flow of ideas by stressing out that an open and undisturbed clash of various information and opinions is a condition of discovering truth in life. The best-known and most frequently quoted fragment of Areopagitica reads: “And though all the winds of doctrine were let loose to play upon the earth, so Truth be in the ! eld, we do injuriously, by licencing and prohibiting to misdoubt her strength. Let her and Falsehood grapple; who ever knew Truth put to the wors, in a free and open encounter. Her confuting is the best and surest suppressing”.

Strategic culture in the theory of international relations is now one of the most important concepts explaining the rules of military behaviour by individual states. In contrast to realism and idealism, its focuses on the influence of internal factors on foreign policy, such as historical experience, national identity, morals in society, and perception of diplomacy by political elites. It therefore allows us to respond to many questions that researchers are not able to answer based solely on the theory of political realism ‒ the perception of national security threats by governments, the national way of war, the socially-acceptable level of victims, the attitude of armed forces to the use of new technologies, or trust to allies. The purpose of this article is to compare the strategic culture of the United States and the People's Republic of China ‒ states with significantly different strategic cultures, historical experience, national identity and methods of warfare. The content of this article may be useful to any person interested in Sino-American relations, political rivalry in the Western Pacific and a possible future war between these powers.

Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza komparatystyczna polskich i amerykańskich rozwiązań prawnych dotyczących prawa do kontaktu rodzica naturalnego z dzieckiem przysposobionym. Wymaga to w pierwszej kolejności zbadania, czy na gruncie polskiego prawa rodzinnego istnieje możliwość umownego kształtowania stosunków rodzinno-prawnych. Dla prowadzenia badań prawno-porównawczych konieczne jest także przedstawienie, przynajmniej w ogólnym zarysie, instytucji open adoption oraz wskazanie implikacji prawnych zawarcia postadoption contact agreement. Pozwoli to odpowiedzieć na pytanie, czy inspirowanie się prawem amerykańskim w odniesieniu do tego zagadnienia byłoby właściwe.
The purpose of this publication is to analyze comparatively the Polish and American legal regulations concerning access to an adopted child by their biological parent. First of all, it is necessary to study if it is possible to create legal family relationship by an agreement within the Polish Family Law. In order to conducting research, it is necessary to present, in a general outline institution of open adoption and show legal implications of concluding postadoption contact agreement. This item of research enables us to answer the question if this inspiration of the American Law in that issue would be accurate.

The subject of my interest is to analyze the most important conditions and dependencies regarding the attitude of the Russian Federation towards Brexit in the political, economic and military dimension. The main purpose of these considerations is an attempt to answer the question of whether Britain’s exit from the European Union may become a chance for Russia to achieve its political, economic and military goals or a threat to its international interests. At the outset, I intend to describe the political dimension of Brexit for Russia, which is related to the attempts of the Kremlin’s government and journalists to find out why the British have made the decision in the referendum. I would also like to present a hypothesis that because of the vote in the UK, Moscow has once again become a major player in the international arena after the annexation of Crimea and the war in eastern Ukraine, as evidenced by the US–Russian cooperation in resolving the Syrian conflict. In the further part of the text, I address the problem of Russia’s economic situation and the possible implications of Brexit on the functioning of the Russian economy. In addition, I am introducing the military dimension of Brexit for Russia, which is related to the findings of the NATO summit in in July 2016, regarding the strengthening of the Alliance’s forces on the so-called Eastern flank. In summary, I will try to outline whether Brexit may be a long-term opportunity or a threat to Russia, considering its current political, economic and military interests.

Niniejszy artykuł poświęcony jest w całości instytucji przewodniczącego na przykładzie Kongresu Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki. Urząd przewodniczącego, do którego kompetencji należy prowadzenie obrad jest charakterystyczny dla ciał o strukturze kolegialnej. Ma to zastosowanie zwłaszcza do tych z nich, których skład tworzy więcej niż kilka osób. Autor artykułu skupia się na wszystkich aspektach dotyczących tego urzędu. W pierwszej części znajduje się krótka charakterystyka modeli instytucji przewodniczącego parlamentu, a także rys historyczny tej instytucji. W dalszej części autor przedstawia pozycję ustrojową przewodniczących izb amerykańskiego parlamentu.
This article is devoted entirely to the institution of the President on the example of the Congress of the United States of America. The office of the chairman, whose competence is to conduct deliberations, is characteristic of bodies with a collegial structure. This applies especially to those of them whose composition consists of more than a few persons. The author of the article focus on all aspects concerning this office. In the first part there is a brief characterization of the models of the institution of the speaker of parliament, as well as a historical outline of this institution. In the next part an author present the systemic position of the presiding officers of the chambers of the American Parliament.

Artykuł stanowi próbę częściowego wypełnienia tej luki przez wyjaśnienie wpływu warunków geograficznych, kontekstu zewnętrznego oraz myślenia strategicznego elit politycznych na ukształtowanie się pozycji USA na arenie międzynarodowej
This article is devoted to American geostrategy in historical terms. Its purpose is to identify the key moments that have influenced the American concept of action towards the external environment. Geopolitical history of the USA is a cognitively interesting subject. At the same time it is a subject quite poorly recognized in contemporary Polish literature. While contemporary US geopolitics is the subject of many studies, there is lack of publications analyzing the historical traditions of American geopolitics and geostrategy, which has led to US domination in the world. This article attempts to partially fill this gap by explaining the impact of geographic conditions, external context, and political strategic thinking on US international position.
