Opis:
Introduction. Depression is a mental illness widespread in the population and is the most common mental disorder. There has been an increase in number of depression diagnoses among the wider population in the past few years. Aim. The aim of the study was to gain knowledge regarding the attitudes towards depression and to measure the occurrence of depression symptoms among open populations of Polish and British people. Materials and methods. The study was conducted from March to May 2015 by posting an electronic survey on a social network in Polish and English language. 143 completed questionnaires were obtained. The method of diagnostic survey was used in this study. The research tools was a survey created by the authors and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results. Every third respondent acknowledged that they have a sufficient knowledge of depression. Based on BDI results, 75% of Poles and 39% of British did not show any signs of depression. Conclusions. The British understand the term “depression” correctly more often than Poles. The inhabitants of Poland and Great Britain take a positive attitude towards people with depression. The British have depressive symptoms more frequently than Poles. Nationality and age do not affect the severity of depressive symptoms in both groups.

Opis:
Among the conditions which have shaped the relations between the European countries and Africa the ones worth mentioning are tradition and historical ties linking Europe with its former colonies. The process of colonisation, as well as decolonisation, and the postcolonial era have permanently tied African countries with the Old Continent. The two European countries which are most interested in developing cooperation with Sub-Saharan Africa are the United Kingdom and France - the two biggest colonial states in Africa. At the beginning of the last century, before the independence of Egypt, London controlled the largest part of Africa (36.5%), as well as Sub-Saharan Africa (41.5%); whereas France was on the second place, with 35% of the whole African continent and 28.6% of the Sub-Saharan part. The aim of this article is to present the policy of the UK towards Africa, its determinants and the role of historical factors in mutual relations, as well as the main directions of the British policy towards Africa - its main principles, aims and progress. The article focuses mainly on the last decade of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century, and on the rule of John Major and Tony Blair, i.e. 1990-2007.

The graduates’ startup formation process represents a possible future role for universities in the form of active-participation, when speaking of the regional development. Tracking the path of entrepreneurial graduates who are moving between home, university, and employment, allows us to identify the specific motives that determine their migration decisions. The choice of location of graduate entrepreneurs is naturally affected by the context of their home region, as the availability of resources leads to a rising entrepreneurial intention. Similarly, the location of the startups flourish in densely populated urban regions, as well as in wealthier locations. At the same time, the vibrancy of the local entrepreneurial ecosystems is enhanced through mutual exchange and collaboration; and the higher the number of startups already present in a region, the higher the probability becomes for interaction and creativity. A leading tendency, not least to be mentioned, is that the preference to start new businesses is connected to highly-skilled creative sectors of the economy.

The author will outline the history of minewater remediation in the UK with special reference to investigations and construction schemes undertaken by SRK in England, Scotland and Wales over the past seven years. The influence of mining and geology on the waters, the flow of minewater and its discharge location, and then the subsequent choice of remediation methodology, site and construction option will be examined at specific sites. At Polkemmet Colliery in Scotland rising minewater was prevented from discharging in an uncontrolled manner by installing pumps into an old mine shaft and constructing a semi-active treatment plant on site before discharging the water to a nearby stream. Edmondsley remediation scheme in County Durham involves the treatment of a ferruginous discharge from a drainage adit by the pumping of minewater through a woodland nature reserve up to a three cell wetland, and then by gravity return to a nearby stream. In Derbyshire, the Fender scheme has recently been constructed and involves treatment through reedbeds sited on former colliery and ironworks tips with the water first being pumped across an existing river from shafts sited in the yard of a factory unit. At Blaenavon construction has recently commenced. The scheme involves the capture and piping of two ferruginous minewater flows underground and then treatment through reedbeds. The water flows through Big Pit, a former mine reopened to the public as a tourist attraction.

Opis:
The subject of this publication is the scepticism regarding the future of the European Union in the UK. The research is based on Eurobarometer surveys conducted over the period of five years. A purpose of the research is to show the relationship between the results of the Eurobarometer survey on the future of the EU, and the eurosceptic views in the UK. The main research questions is: is the UK sceptical about the future of the EU? Hypothesis of this publication is that the UK is sceptical about the future of the European Union. The reasons for such attitudes are not analysed here – the article is merely an attempt to present the societal attitudes. The research method employed is the comparative critical analysis of quantitative data. The conclusion is that Great Britain is not significantly eurosceptic. British people are, however, less enthusiastic about what is happening at present in the EU, and also are showing greater anxieties when it comes to the future of the EU.

This article analyses the Brexit problem in the light of main concepts of differentiated integration. Great Britain, enjoying the status of preferential membership in the European union, benefi ted from the positive discrimination in many sectoral policies. After 23 June 2016 Brexit referendum, David Cameron’s and Theresa May’s governments work towards the status of preferential non-membership, opening a new chapter in the debate about differentiated forms of integration in Europe.

Fortunately, the replacement, based on a macroconch type, is a better representative of the genus than its originally validly designated microconch, Ammonites biplex. The decision in Opinion 303 (Hemming, 1954) is therefore a good one but arrived at for the wrong reasons. It should be left unchanged.

Scottish Independence Referendum will take place on 18 September 2014. There would be only one question during referendum: “Should Scotland be an independent country? The reform of devolution established by Scotland Act 2012 is sometimes overlooked by observers as too little too late. The most principal issues of the referendum will be: economy, oil resources, currency, defense and European Union. Main doubt around referendum is whether Scotland would be better economically after Independence. Scotland’s position within the EU is likely to be shaped more by any agreements between the parties than by pre-existing principles of EU law. Doubts about Scottish membership in the EU have to be viewed in the context of the referendum on the UK’s membership in the European Union, that will take place if the Conservative Party wins the 2015. British political class have always behaved differently towards the European integration than continental elites The importance of the European dimension of the Scottish Independence Referendum was proved by Panelbase poll in May 2013.

Opis:
The present study aimed to explore whether personality traits infl uence buying behaviour and if this infl uence differs depending on a different culture. The author focused on a crosscultural investigation of Poland and the UK. Data were collected via an online questionnaire which measured personality traits, consumer purchase behaviour and the meaning of branded products for 525 participants. The results show signifi cant relationships between personality traits and both, consumer shopping styles and the way individuals perceived branded products. Personality traits were assessed by the MINI-IPIP test, a 20-items instrument which measures the Big Five personalities: Extraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Neuroticism, and Intellect/Imagination (or Openness). Buying behaviour was tested by two scales. The fi rst one was a 39-item Consumer Shopping Inventory (CSI), which indentifi es eight shopping style dimensions: Perfectionist/High Quality Conscious, Brand Consciousness/Price Equals Quality, Novelty and Fashion Conscious, Recreational and Shopping Conscious, Price Conscious/Value for the Money, Impulsiveness/Careless, Confused by Overchoice, Habitual/Brand Loyal. Another instrument used was a 32-item the Meaning of Branded Products scale, presenting four dominant themes: Quality, Values, Personal Identity and Traditions. The present study also investigated the moderating effect of citizenship and other socio-demographic characteristics in the relation between personality traits and both, the meaning of branded products and shopping styles.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to analyze the 2017 United Kingdom general election, that took place in June 2017, in the context of Brexit, as the process of impending withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU) is customarily called. The author aimed to verify the hypothesis, frequently proclaimed especially at the beginning of the campaign, that the Brexit was the main issue of this election. This verification was carried out through various analysis of the behavior of political actors (manifestos, campaign activities, statements in social media, etc.), but also social expectations (what citizens consider, according to declarations, as important, what motivated them when making choice, especially in the case of people who had changed their party preferences). The basic conclusion is that the campaign before the 2017 election brought very little to the Brexit debate, and political actors, contrary to the original announcements, dealt with the problem superficially. On the other hand, the political landscape, especially the voters’ decisions, are strongly determined by the division revealed by the referendum and its consequences. It is debatable whether this division is deeper, and the Brexit referendum was just one of its manifestations. Formulating specific propositions about Brexit was not the goal of the campaign of the two main parties, but only the instrument justifying the decision about snap election and serving to communicate and strengthen the basic slogans of the campaign – strong leadership for difficult times or return to a policy of redistribution and solidarity. An effective instrument, taking into accountthe fact that the dominance of the two main parties in the election has been the largest in nearly 50 years.

This paper examines Hungarian migration to the United Kingdom following EU accession. Migration from Hungary has generally been low both before and after accession, but trends have recently started to change. Based on the available statistical data, the paper explores the volume, key demographics and geographical distribution of this migration, and shows how a combination of economic, political and social factors is accountable for the migration of Hungarians to the United Kingdom. To give a human face to the phenomenon, the paper also builds on narrative interviews collected during recent ethnographic fieldwork in London, highlighting the role of economic decline, policy miscalculations, language competence and the online migration industry in shaping the motivations, aims and accommodation of migrants. The paper suggests that migration from Hungary may become more dominant in the second decade of the country’s EU membership than it has been during the first ten years.

This paper begins with Isaiah Berlin’s two concepts of liberty – negative and positive – and uses them as a lens to bring two different notions of sovereignty into clearer focus. Moreover it aims at explaining how these differing notions of sovereignty provoke divergent and often counterintuitive responses to the question of EU integration. In particular it considers the attitudes of Poland and the United Kingdom as examples of the difference views between one new accession state and one founding member. But simultaneously they have been burden for British welfare system (among others by taking benefits for family members living outside the UK) and taking job even for minimum salary what have caused growth of native British unemployment. In this situation Conservative-Liberal Government leading by David Cameron have decided to limit an access to the UK labour market by language knowledge tests and tightening social benefits policy to job seekers. With informal support of main opposition parties (i.e. the Labour Party and the UKIP) D. Cameron have taken risky game showing he has been able to fight for his nation’s interests even in spite of huge protests of Polish and other Eastern European countries politicians and against the European Parliament resolution of 16 January 2014. But when turning out into a defender of Britons’ rights he also has showed that there have been deep divisions between “old” and “new” Europe still after 10 years of the EU’s biggest enlargement in 2004.

Brexit will officially fall on 29 March 2019 at midnight, Brussels time, and will undoubtedly represents a milestone in the history of European integration: after long years of deepening and enlarging, this is the first time a sovereign member state will leave the EU. This article is a humble effort to provide an overview of Brexit, by identifying the interests and red lines of the EU and the UK, as well as pointing to the key elements of negotiations, as they are known at the time of writing, the end of May 2018. For the research primary and secondary sources have been analysed, and historical methodology has been combined with the critical analysis method to understand the background of the process and point to its main stumbling blocks. The paper concludes that despite apparent rigidities and deadlocks, mutual trust and goodwill, as well as time constraint and practical considerations, may help overcome divides and find technically workable solutions.

The aim of this text is to answer the question to what extent European integration influenced the creation and functioning of the regions in two countries: United Kingdom and Poland. The hypothesis is, based on model of different sources of regional power by A. Bourne, that in both countries the EU impact strengthened regional powers. European integration is shown as one of the factors triggering decentralization reforms in both countries. A pro-regional shift in national politics is explained as a sign of Europeanization of administrative structures and political priorities. There is evidence that European integration empowered regions in the UK and Poland. Sub-national authorities received new competencies, especially regarding regional policy implementation, and can use new channels of participation in the formulation of EU policy. Even if central governments remain to be gate-keepers between regional authorities and the EU, the regional profile has been boosted.
