    The main task of the research was to investigate and differentiate the historical stages of the formation of Ukraine’s geopolitical view, based on the Ukrainian statehood history and works of key researches, which had been directly influenced by the evolution of its geopolitical consciousness and thinking. In the article, three main historical stages of Ukraine’s geopolitical view formation were differentiated and the reason why the state’s geopolitical view gradually transformed into the state’s geopolitical interest after Ukraine attained independence was substantiated. The article includes a SWOT analysis of Ukraine’s geopolitical location, based on which the state’s geopolitical interests of local, regional and global levels were represented. As Ukraine is in the field of geopolitical orientation of many countries not only in Europe but also around the world, the study of the state’s geopolitical view formation and current transformation is topical and can be useful for foreign researchers.

    The aim of the article is to present the role of Germany in the geopolitical game over Ukraine. It consists of three parts, in which successively were presented: general frameworks and the geopolitical dimension of Ukrainian crisis, the controversies around Ukrainian crisis policy towards Russia in Germany, and the role of a federal government in the geopolitical game over Ukraine in the period 2013–2015. The general thesis of the article is that despite internal controversies in Germany the CDU/CSU/SPD government works to keep the armistice in Donbas (Minsk I and II) as a foreground premise for carrying out long-range reforms and reconstruction of Ukraine as a associated partner of the EU, at the same time heading toward gradual search of agreement and compromise with Russia. In spite of criticism on the part of some NATO and EU members Germany entirely exclude weapon supplies to Ukraine, betting on the long-term need of peaceful resolution of Ukrainian crisis and demure the possibility of Ukraine’s membership in NATO.

    The article Ukraine at the crossroads of geopolitical interests focuses on Ukraine’s place in the world’s today, especially in its geo-political significance.     This paper explores the interrelationships between religious attitudes, ethnic and linguistic identities, and geopolitical preferences in three geopolitical fault-line cities in Eastern Ukraine – Mariupol, Kharkiv, and Dnipro. The research is based on data taken from a survey and the associated descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The findings suggest that the religious divide in Eastern Ukraine does not generate additional division but instead strengthens the existing divide, which is known to be formulated in terms of geopolitical as opposed to language or ethnicity-based categories, although language and ethnicity do have an influence on geopolitical preferences. Moreover, civic-national identity appears to be more relevant than ethnic-national identity to understanding the religious fault-line in Eastern Ukraine.

    Federacja Rosyjska jest zainteresowana destabilizacją państw, które uznaje za swoją strefę wpływów. Dotyczy to w największym stopniu przestrzeni tzw. Świętej Rusi, czyli Ukrainy i Białorusi. Inspiruje więc działania mające na celu tzw. „wtórną nacjonalizację”, czego przykładem jest koncepcja „ruskiego miru” (Русский мир), która opiera się na integracji narodowo-kulturowej i historyczno-politycznej wspólnoty rosyjskojęzycznej. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ukazanie roli tej koncepcji w polityce Federacji Rosyjskiej wobec Ukrainy. „Ruski mir” stanowi narzędzie rosyjskiej ekspansji geopolitycznej na terytorium tego państwa, chociaż projekt stracił zdecydowanie na znaczeniu po nadaniu Cerkwi Ukraińskiej statusu autokefalicznego 6 stycznia 2019 roku. Realizacja koncepcji wiąże się dążeniem do odzyskania statusu imperium, opierając się na przekonaniu o odrębności rosyjskiego świata cywilizacyjnego i rosyjskiej duchowości, szczególnej mesjańskiej roli rosyjskiego prawosławia oraz prawie do ekspansji politycznej i kulturowej. Wpisuje się w to także prawo do zbrojnej interwencji humanitarnej w obronie „ruskiego miru”.
    The Russian Federation is interested in destabilizing the states that it recognizes as its sphere of influence. This applies to the greatest extent to the so-called Holy Rus, that is, Ukraine and Belarus. So it inspires activities aimed at the so-called „Secondary nationalization”, as exemplified by the concept of „Russkiy mir”, which is based on the pursuit of national-cultural and historical-political integration of the Russian-speaking community. The purpose of this article is to show the role of this concept in the policy of the Russian Federation towards Ukraine. "Russkiy mir" is a tool of Russian geopolitical expansion on the territory of this country, although the project lost its significance after the autocephalous status of the Ukrainian Church was granted on January 6, 2019. The implementation of the concept is associated with the desire to regain the status of an empire, based on the conviction of the exclusivity of the Russian civilization and Russian spirituality, the special messianic role of Russian Orthodoxy, and the right to political and cultural expansionism. This also includes the right to armed humanitarian intervention in defense of the "Russian world".

    The article focuses on the issue of the Bush Doctrine as the basic geopolitical code that dominated American foreign policy in the first decades of the 21st century. It aims to explain the impact of this code and doctrine on Russia's aggressive policy in Ukraine. The author examines the key elements of contemporary US security strategy, noting the way in which the US geopolitical code has been read by Russian political elites and how this has impacted Russian behavior in international relations. It is pointed out that the “idealistic” attempt to spread democratic values embodied in the Bush Doctrine has been read by Russian elites as a “realistic” instrument of geopolitical expansion. The author explains the consequences related to the Russian reading of the processes taking place in the international environment, which in the Russian symbolic-political space have been identified with the US implementation of the Bush Doctrine. The author's thesis is that among the reasons for the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine one can point to a specifically Russian interpretation of the Bush Doctrine.
    Artykuł koncentruje się na kwestii Doktryny Busha jako podstawowego kodu geopolitycznego, który zdominował amerykańską politykę zagraniczną w pierwszych dekadach XXI wieku. Jego celem jest wyjaśnienie wpływu tego kodu i doktryny na agresywną politykę Rosji na Ukrainie. Autor analizuje kluczowe elementy współczesnej amerykańskiej strategii bezpieczeństwa, zwracając uwagę na sposób, w jaki amerykański kod geopolityczny został odczytany przez rosyjskie elity polityczne i jak wpłynęło to na rosyjskie zachowanie w stosunkach międzynarodowych. Wskazano, że "idealistyczna" próba szerzenia wartości demokratycznych zawarta w Doktrynie Busha została odczytana przez rosyjskie elity jako "realistyczny" instrument ekspansji geopolitycznej. Autor wyjaśnia konsekwencje związane z rosyjskim odczytaniem procesów zachodzących w środowisku międzynarodowym, które w rosyjskiej przestrzeni symboliczno-politycznej zostały utożsamione z realizacją przez USA Doktryny Busha. Autor stawia tezę, że wśród przyczyn wybuchu konfliktu na Ukrainie można wskazać specyficznie rosyjską interpretację Doktryny Busha.

    Sworznie geopolityczne to jeden z elementów teorii opracowanej przez Zbigniewa Brzezińskiego w jego pracy pt.: „Wielka Szachownica”. Celem artykułu jest przeanalizowanie roli sworzni geopolitycznych w kontekście współczesnych stosunków międzynarodowych. Postawiona w artykule hipoteza badawcza zakłada, że sworznie są wciąż kluczowymi elementami w polityce międzynarodowej, a ich pozycja nie uległa zmianie. Analizie poddane zostają następujące kraje: Ukraina, Turcja, Korea Południowa, Azerbejdżan oraz Iran. Na podstawie zebranych materiałów i analizy wybranych dokumentów autor potwierdza znaczenie wszystkich pięciu sworzni geopolitycznych oraz przedstawia ich obecny, wciąż bardzo silny, wpływ na politykę zagraniczną w regionie, w którym się znajdują. Wszystkie kraje zakwalifikowane do kategorii sworzni, mimo braku wyraźnego potencjału gospodarczego lub militarnego stanowią ważny element polityki regionalnej często znajdując się na skrzyżowaniu najważniejszych punktów handlowych, gospodarczych oraz na linii styku wpływów różnych mocarstwo światowych jak Rosja, Chiny czy USA.
    Geopolitical pivots are one of the elements of the theory developed by Zbigniew Brzezinski in his work "Great Chessboard". The aim of the article is to analyse the role of geopolitical pivots in the context of contemporary international relations. The research hypothesis in the article assumes that pivots are still a key element in international politics and their position has not been changed. It seems to be true for all the five pivots, namely Ukraine, Turkey, South Korea, Azerbaijan and Iran. Basing on the collected materials and analysis of selected documents, the author presents their current, still very strong, influence on foreign policy in particular regions. Despite the lack of economic or military potential, all countries are an important part of regional policy, often at the crossroads of major trading routes, and at the frontiers of various civilizations and world powers like Russia, China or USA

    The research topic has been selected with importance of Central Asian region for Ukraine’s politics in mind, specifically Ukraine’s desire to develop mutually advantageous relations with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Ukraine is keen on identifying promising opportunities for deepening its relationship with these states to the benefit of both sides. The present article analyzes the key concerns in interactions between Ukraine and Central Asian countries in the current period of their independence and trends in development of cooperation with them in light of significant influence of major powers present in Central Asia. The paper presents the views of representatives of the scientific and expert community on the concerning issues, as well as on overall potential and prospects of Ukraine’s cooperation with Central Asian states. Assessments are made of how the state interests of Ukraine can best be achieved in the country’s policy towards Central Asian region, taking into account the evolving situation within and without it. The work focuses on the need for Ukraine to take advantage of geopolitical opportunities emerging in Central Asia, particularly in the context of dynamic development of political and economic processes in CAR region. The author discusses the possibility of implementing new frameworks to establish long-term mutually beneficial cooperation between Ukraine and Central Asian states, including the multilateral options for development of constructive relations with participation of the global powers. Finally, the author presents own vision of developing Ukraine’s cooperation with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in a manner ensuring Ukrainian interests in the region are attained within the framework of multilateral cooperation between CAR countries, world powers and Ukraine itself.
    Temat artykułu został wybrany ze względu na znaczenie regionu Azji Środkowej dla polityki Ukrainy, szczególnie z uwagi na pragnienie Ukrainy rozwijania wzajemnie korzystnych stosunków z Kazachstanem, Kirgistanem, Tadżykistanem, Turkmenistanem i Uzbekistanem. Ukraina chętnie poszukuje możliwości pogłębienia wzajemnie korzystnych stosunków z tymi państwami. W niniejszym artykule przeanalizowano potencjalnie problematyczne aspekty w interakcjach między Ukrainą a krajami Azji Środkowej w bieżącym okresie ich niepodległości, oraz trendy widoczne w rozwoju współpracy z nimi w świetle znaczącego lokalnego wpływu globalnych mocarstw obecnych w Azji Środkowej, a także poglądy przedstawicieli środowiska naukowego i eksperckiego na kwestie problematyczne, potencjał i perspektywy współpracy Ukrainy z państwami Azji Centralnej, w tym poglądy dotyczące oceny optymalnej metody pozwalającej Ukrainie osiągnąć własne interesy narodowe w ramach polityki ukraińskiej w regionie Azji Środkowej (biorąc pod uwagę rozwój sytuacji wewnętrznej i zewnętrznej). W artykule skoncentrowano się na potrzebie wykorzystania przez Ukrainę szans geopolitycznych pojawiających się w Azji Centralnej, szczególnie w kontekście dynamicznego rozwoju procesów politycznych i gospodarczych w regionie. Autor omawia możliwość wdrożenia nowego podejścia dla wspomożenia rozwoju długoterminowej wzajemnie korzystnej współpracy Ukrainy z krajami Azji Środkowej, w tym szeregu opcji współpracy wielostronnej z udziałem wiodących potęg gospodarczych i politycznych świata. Kończąc, autor przedstawia własną wizję rozwoju współpracy Ukrainy z Kazachstanem, Kirgistanem, Tadżykistanem, Turkmenistanem i Uzbekistanem w taki sposób, aby ukraińskie interesy w regionie zostały osiągnięte w ramach wielostronnej współpracy między krajami Azji Środkowej, potęgami światowymi i samą Ukrainą.
