Distribution of Loiseleuria procumbens (L.) Desv. in the Eastern Carpathians of Ukraine is presented on the basis of herbaria, literature and the authors' field studies. Site conditions of species occurrence and its phytocoenotic properties are described. The needs' of protection of L. procumbens and its plant communities are discussed.

Opis:
The natural population of yew in the Knyazhdvir Nature Reserve was described and its status has been analyzed. It was stated that more than 22 000 specimens of yew grow there and it is the most numerous population of the species in Ukraine. The most important factor for Taxus baccata occurrence there are the presence of calcium carbonate and humidity of the soils. The height and diameter structures of the population indicate that the population is in progress. The largest specimens in 1976 were of 12 m high and of 30 cm dbh. The natural regeneration is satisfactory. The increment of height of the yew was greater in the conditions of less density of the canopy of beech-fir stand under which the species grows.

Opis:
The taxonomic position of the population of tree-like, mostly polycormic individuals of pines from the Mshana peat bog in the Gorgany Mountains (East Carpathians, Ukraine) has been studied on the basis of the morphological characteristics of cones and needles, and anatomical characteristics of the needles. These features have been compared with the surrounding Pinus mugo population as well as P. uliginosa, P. mugo, P. sylvestris and P. uncinata from natural populations of the taxa. Tree-like individuals were found to have the most similar needles to P. uliginosa, but most similar cone characteristics to P. mugo. It was concluded, that the tree-like population has a relic character and can present the trace of the early migration of P. uliginosa from the West and its hybridisation with P. mugo.

Pinetum mugo association
Opis:
Pinus mugo occurs only in the highest mountain chains of the Ukrainian East Carpathians. The largest part of the species area covers the Chornokhora ridge and the highest ridges of the Gorgany. In the other mountains of Ukraine it does not form thicket on so large terrains. Vertically, most of localities are placed at an elevation between 1400 and 1900 m, with maximum at 2010 m in the Chornokhora and with minimum about 700–800 m. The latter stands were reported from the peat bogs, however, the most of them have been destroyed and do not exist now. The dwarf mountain pine forms the community of Pinetum mugo, formed exclusively on the substrata not containing calcium dioxide. The species is connected with northern exposures. The area of distribution of Pinus mugo has been strongly reduced during centuries and association Pinetum mugo transformed into pastures.

Opis:
The paper provides a detailed characterisation of Norway spruce stands in the Ukrainian Carpathians. The majority of natural spruce stands in Ukraine occur in Polesie, while artificial regeneration is spread all over the country. The most densely forested part of Ukraine is the Carpathian region with 41.1% of forest-covered area (2.1 million ha). Spruce-dominated stands occupy about 700 thousand hectares (30%) of the forested area of the state forest fund in the Ukrainian Carpathians, and another 10% of the mixed forests contain 10 to 30% of spruce. Besides pure spruce stands, there are beech-spruce, beech-fir-spruce, and cedar-spruce stands. The most productive stands (750-900m3 stem wood per ha) grow in the middle and lower parts of slopes at 1100-1200 m a.s.l. which have favourable soil and climate conditions. Since the second half of the 20th century, spruce stands in the substantial part of the Ukrainian Carpathians have declined under the influence of complex anthropogenic and natural factors. Although the present condition of most spruce forests in this region remains satisfactory, the degradation processes and the ban imposed in 2006 on planting spruce on non-spruce forest sites (in state forests) may decrease their area in the longer term.
