Tekst jest recenzją książki Andrew Chestermana Reflections on Translation Theory. Selected Papers 1993–2014 (John Benjamins Publishing Company, Amsterdam/Philadelphia 2017). Zawiera charakterystykę metody badawczej autora oraz omówienie problematyki poszczególnych artykułów. Szczególny nacisk został położony na opisanie stosunku Chestermana do dyscypliny Translation Studies – lęków, nadziei i postulatów autora związanych z jej kształtem i statusem. Perspektywa wyłaniająca się z książki została skonfrontowana ze stanem badań nad przekładem w Polsce, a widoczne w niej przekonanie o konieczności uspójniania dyscypliny zostało podane w wątpliwość.
This text is a review of a book by Andrew Chesterman: Reflections on Translation Theory. Selected Papers 1993-2014 (John Benjamins Publishing Company, Amsterdam/Philadelphia 2017). It explains the author’s research methods and describes the problems covered in individual articles. Special attention is paid to a description of Chesterman’s attitude to the field of translation studies, including the fears, hopes and postulates presented by the author about its shape and status. The perspectives emerging from the book are contrasted with the current state of research into translation in Poland today, and doubts are cast on the need to achieve greater coherence in this field of research.

Translation has become one of the most important aspects of contemporary culture in the globalised world: it is a condition for intercultural communication as well as a means of preservation of culturally specific elements. No longer can we ignore the impact is has on cultural praxis and the functioning of many disciplines of the humanities. As a methodological framework Translation Studies offers a set of analytic and interpretive tools for research into various “translation zones”, for a long time seen as marginal, but in fact the most active spaces in cultures. It is there that the mediation processes and cultural transfer happens. The paper looks at the ways in which Translation Studies defines its aims and methods and sketches possible uses they may be put into in the humanities. The Translational Turn in Culture Studies poses challenges both to TS and other disciplines of the humanities, at the same time offering promising, new research perspectives.

The article deals with two groups of realia in the Slovak novel by Peter Krištúfek (1973–2018). The first one are those concerning Slovak traditional culture, which are used in a form of theatrical scenery by the author. The second one are those connected with Slovak identity, as the writer understands it. The article offers the comparative analysis of the Slovak text with its translations into Czech and English. The conclusion is made about different translators’ strategies according to the translation purpose and extralinguistic circumstances and the necessity of the Czech translations of Slovak fiction despite the unique closeness of these two Slavic languages.

Notre travail est une réflexion sur la traduction du discours traductologique. Prenant comme étude de cas le chapitre « La traduction au manifeste » de l’Épreuve de l’étranger d’Antoine Berman, nous examinons les difficultés de traduction du discours bermanien et, en particulier, l’apparente intraduisibilité des concepts-clés de l’ouvrage. Notre démarche commence par un examen général de la traduisibilité du discours traductologique, qui comprend une analyse des particularités du métalangage. Par la suite, nous passons en revue les axes fondamentaux de la philosophie de Berman, pour identifier dans la dernière partie les défis d’ordre terminologique et discursifs de la traduction du discours bermanien.
The paper deals with the translation of the discourse pertaining to the field of Translation Studies. The case study under scrutiny is the chapter entitled “A Manifestation of Translation” in The Experience of the Foreign by Antoine Berman. We examine certain translation difficulties of Berman’s discourse and, in particular, the apparent untranslatability of key concepts of his work. Our approach starts with a general analysis of the translatability of Translation Studies works, which includes a review of the metalanguage. We then expose the fundamental principles of Berman’s philosophy in order to be able to identify, in the last part of the paper, the terminological and discursive challenges implied by the translation of Berman’s discourse.

Niniejszy artykuł jest recenzją monografii pod red. Marii Piotrowskiej pt. Perspektywy na przekład, która ukazała się w 2021 roku nakładem Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w Krakowie. Książka składa się z dwóch części; po 4 artykułach w cz. 1 ujmujących kwestie przekładu i przekładoznawstwa bardziej całościowo, cz. 2 zawiera siedem rozdziałów, których autorzy pochylają się nad konkretnymi rodzajami przekładu i typami badań przekładoznawczych. Każdy rozdział zaopatruje czytelnika w rzetelną wiedzę i każdy opatrzony jest obszerną bibliografią. Monografia pomyślana jest jako kompendium wiedzy o przekładzie i podręcznik otwierający przyszłą serię podobnych publikacji w języku polskim i angielskim. W mojej ocenie praca ta wykazuje niekwestionowaną przydatność we wszystkich trzech deklarowanych przez współautorów obszarach: teorii, praktyce i dydaktyce przekładu.
This article is a review of the monograph entitled Perspektywy na przekład [Perspectives on translation], edited by Maria Piotrowska and published in 2021 by the Jagiellonian University Publishing House in Krakow. The book consists of two parts; after 4 articles in part 1, addressing the issues of translation and Translation Studies more comprehensively, part 2 contains seven chapters whose authors focus on specific types of translation and types of translation studies. Each chapter provides the reader with solid knowledge and each supplies an extensive bibliography. The monograph is conceived as a compendium of knowledge about translation and a handbook opening a future series of similar publications in Polish and English. In my opinion, the book is unquestionably useful in all three areas declared by the co-authors: translation theory and practice as well as translator education.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to find the carriers of strangeness on the level of the text and the image in the Polish translation of Portugal, a comic book written by a French artist Cyril Pedrosa. It also aims to examine how Polish readers identify the multilingual references to the French and Portuguese culture and if they are able to capture all the changes of the setting and the relations between the protagonists. The article studies the advantages and disadvantages of the presence of multilingual elements in the translated text, the problems related to the change of the recipient and resulting from the cultural differences between the readers of the original text and of the translation. It also focuses on how the extra textual information is transmitted through the use of illustrations and colours and whether it is universal or not.

Aim. The use of feedback (including peer-generated feedback) for learning has been widely investigated across many fields of study, however, no research into its use in Translation studies has been conducted yet. To fill in this gap, the present small-scale study was carried out at a university in Lithuania. It investigated undergraduate translation students’ feedback on their peers’ ESP oral performance by addressing the main research question: what areas are identified as those that need further work on? Methods. The present research was conducted with the participation of 42 undergraduate students who were majors in Translation studies. To carry out the research, qualitative methodology was chosen. The data were drawn from the study participants’ feedback sheets and investigated using inductive content analysis. Results.  The study resulted in the identification and detailed description of four major categories and ten subcategories that reflect the areas that call for further work on, including the study participants’ presentation content, the use of language, presentation delivery mode, and the use of slides. Conclusion. The findings lead to the conclusion that peer feedback, as used in this study, can be viewed as a tool providing its receivers with an opportunity for learning as it supports and directs them toward further improvement.

Przedmiotem niniejszego artykułu są mechanizmy towarzyszące przekładowi literatury postkolonialnej na język „pozakolonialny”, czyli przeniesieniu tekstu poza języki i kultury uczestniczące w (post)kolonialnym zwarciu. Zagadnienia te są omówione na przykładzie przekładów na język polski powieści Chinuy Achebego Things Fall Apart oraz Salmana Rushdiego The Satanic Verses.
This paper aims to describe the mechanisms of translating postcolonial literature into a “non-colonial” language, transmitting a text from languages and cultures which take part in a (post)colonial clash. These issues are illustrated with the examples taken from Polish translations of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart and Salman Rushdie’s The Satanic Verses.

V letih 2000—2013 je izšlo približno 160 knjižnih prevodov slovenske proze, poezije ali dramatike v italijanski jezik. Na podlagi bibliografskega popisa prispevek razčlenjuje najopaznejše kolikostne, kakovostne in estetske značilnosti obravnavanega prevodnega korpusa, jih primerja s predhodno recepcijo slovenskega leposlovja v italijanskem prostoru, podatkovno ugotavlja, kako se je od leta 2000 do danes, posebej po vstopu Slovenije v Evropsko unijo ter v schengensko brezcarinsko območje, znatno okrepilo slovensko-italijansko literarno dajdamstvo in hkrati argumentirano osvetljuje nekaj tipoloških, za prevodoslovje splošno povednih stalnic dialoga med številčno večjimi in manjšimi jeziki, literaturami, kulturami.
Between 2000 and 2013, 160 volumes of Slovene poems, plays and prose texts were published in Italian translation. This article investigates this corpus of translations in terms of quantitative, qualitative and aesthetic issues, while also comparing it with previous receptions of Slovenian literature in the Italian cultural milieu and observing/stressing the significant increase in the literary exchange between Slovenia and Italy since 2000 (particulary after the entry of Slovenia into the European Union and the Schengen area). Within the field of Translation Studies, this article also illustrates some fundamental typological paradigms of dialogue between numerically large and small languages, literatures and cultures.

Inspired by the theories of such well recognized scholars as G. Genette, J. Derrida and E. Skibińska the authors of this paper took a closer look into translators’ comments in Slovene translations of three Polish novels. The analytical part of the paper has been divided into two sections. The first one described the formal characteristics of footnotes. The second one illustrated different cultural, social, and historical contexts of using additional translators` comments.
Cilj prispevka je predstaviti različne vrste prevajalskih opomb v prevodih poljskih knjig v slovenščino: Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną D.Mmasłowske, Lubiewo M. Witkowskega in Gnój W. Kuczoka. avtorja sta predstavila kratek pregled obstoječih teorij prevajalskih opomb. Analitični del prispevka je sestavljen iz dveh delov. v prvem delu se avtorja osredotočata na formalne značilnosti opomb, kot statipologija in klasifikacija glede na uporabljene tehnike. V drugem delu prispevka pa sledi analiza besedila v opombah s posebnim poudarkom na kulturne, družbene in zgodovinske elemente.

The article analyses Franco Fortini’s two poems written in 1944 during his exile in Switzerland: Warsaw 1939 and Warsaw 1944 (the latter’s former title was Warsaw 1943). The poet defined them Imaginary Translations, because he conceived them as translated from an inexistent original, written in occupied Poland. In this way, the Italian poet experimented for the first time with imaginary translations. Following Macpherson and Leopardi’s tradition of “Literary Hoaxes”, he sought new forms and “new words” for Poetry on WW II. The article compares the Fortini’s“Polish” poems with later comments on Imaginary translations (they are akin to “Imitation or Parody”, are created “taking delight in prank and experiment” and derive from a certain dominant conception of a foreign literature), paying particular attention to their strong intertextuality and their allusions to the practice of translating poetry in Italy.
Podczas politycznego wygnania w Szwajcarii, włoski poeta Franco Fortini opublikował anonimowo dwa wiersze (Warszawa 1943, Warszawa 1944), podając je za tłumaczenia tekstów napisanych w okupowanej Polsce. W ten sposób poeta po raz pierwszy eksperymentował na wyimaginowanych przekładach z nieistniejących oryginałów. Odwoływanie się do tradycji „literackich oszustw”, praktykowanej wcześniej przez Macphersona i Leopardiego, pomagało mu w poszukiwaniu form i „słów” dla nowej wojennej poezji. Artykuł zestawia „polskie” wiersze Fortiniego z jego późniejszymi wystąpieniami teoretycznymi, w których poeta analizuje relację wyimaginowanych przekładów do „imitacji lub parodii” w kontekście dominującego w środowisku literackim postrzegania danej literatury. Zwraca również szczególną uwagę na silną intertekstualność obu wierszy oraz na ukrytą w nich krytykę włoskiej praktyki translatorskiej.

The article is a voice in the discussion on contemporary translations of medieval Latin poetry: accepted and possible ways of translating Latin poetry for todayʼs readers, situated within the field of translation studies and poetics – it is part of the research on the reception of the ancient tradition, of which translations are a particular manifestation. The subject of interest is a poem from the medieval collection Carmina Rivipullensia: the only existing collection of Latin love lyric of the Middle Ages from Spain. It testifies to the very lively presence of the Latin poetic tradition in the Iberian Peninsula at that time. This article presents a translatorʼs proposal, accompanied by a commentary, in which arguments for the chosen solutions are indicated. The aim of the article is to present the translatorʼs ideas, mainly concerning the chosen strategy for the translation of the rhymes in Latin medieval poetry, which are an important feature of the Songs.

Angielska klasyka literatury dziecięcej to dzieła, które przeszły próbę czasu – to książki mądre i piękne, lecz jednocześnie niezwykle trudne w przekładzie. Mniej więcej osiemdziesięcioletnią epokę „złotego wieku” anglojęzycznej literatury dziecięcej otwierają Carrollowskie Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), a kontynuują dzieła takich twórców, jak L.M. Alcott, J.M. Barrie, L.F. Baum, F.H. Burnett, K. Grahame, R. Kipling, H. Lofting, A.A. Milne, L.M. Montgomery, E. Nesbit, B. Potter, R.L. Stevenson, P.L. Travers czy M. Twain, współtworzące kanon najsłynniejszych dzieł literatury dziecięcej. Z kolei pierwsze polskie przekłady angielskiej klasyki pojawiły się niemal sto pięćdziesiąt lat temu – pod koniec XIX stulecia – i prace nad nimi były kontynuowane przez cały wiek XX aż do dzisiaj, tworząc często rozbudowane serie tłumaczeniowe. W polskiej translatologii brak dotąd ujęć pozwalających zobaczyć kanon anglojęzycznej klasyki dziecięcej i historię jego przekładów w perspektywie innej niż bliska, komparatystyczna analiza oryginału i tłumaczeń wybranych tekstów literackich. Celem niniejszego szkicu jest zaproponowanie modelu makropoetyki przekładu, który umożliwiłby badanie polskich tłumaczeń anglojęzycznych arcydzieł dla najmłodszych w oddaleniach, przekrojach i profilach, uwzględniających perspektywę ilościową (rozmiary serii translatorskich), czasową (ich przyrastanie w czasie) oraz jakościową (recepcję i ocenę krytyki), wpisując się jednocześnie w przedstawioną przez Franco Morettiego propozycję „czytania oddalonego” [distant reading].
The classics of English children’s literature are works that have survived the test of time. These are wise and beautiful books that are simultaneously exceptionally challenging to translate. The eighty-year period of the “Golden Age” of English-language children’s literature was inaugurated with Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and continued with works by authors such as Louisa May Alcott, J.M. Barrie, L. Frank Baum, Frances H. Burnett, Kenneth Grahame, Rudyard Kipling, Hugh Lofting, A. A. Milne, L.M. Montgomery, Edith Nesbit, Beatrix Potter, R.L. Stevenson, P. L. Travers and Mark Twain, who together comprise the canon of best-known literary works for children. The first Polish translations of these English-language classics appeared, in turn, around 150 years ago, towards the end of the nineteenth century. The work of translating the canon has continued throughout the entire twentieth century and into the present day, frequently producing substantial translation sets for individual titles. Polish translation theory has thus far lacked a means for treating the English-language canon and the history of its translations from any other perspective but that of close-reading and comparative analysis of the original and translated texts of individual titles. This essay’s objective is to propose the model of the macropoetics of translation, which might facilitate research on Polish translations of English-language masterpieces for younger readers in the form of overviews, profiles, and intersections, leveraging perspectives that are quantitative (the volume of translations), chronological (how they emerged over time) and qualitative (their reception and critical status), all in keeping with Franco Moretti’s proposition of “distant reading.”
