Opis:
Unlike most freshwater bivalves, zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha PALLAS) have free swimming larvae and are thus dependent on water currents to guarantee the spreading of their offspring. Although planktonic, the larvae are able to carry out some directed movements. This paper presents investigations carried out in the Szczecin Lagoon, testing the settlement of larvae on different materials at three sites. Zebra mussel larvae preferred the central part of the lagoon for settlement and favoured horizontal over vertical orientation. The rank order referring to number of settled mussels was net > wood > stones > mussel shells > PVc. Water current velocity in the crucial phase was usually very low (<10 cm/s), i.e. not above the limit for settlement. Therefore, other parameters must be involved as well. Two factors are discussed in particular: 1) salinity, and 2) sensory capacities of larvae, linked to the question of their capability of choosing where they settle.

The stonewort Chara connivens was rediscovered in the Vistula Lagoon in 2011, almost 35 years after its last record. In 2012, the species was recorded for the first time in the Szczecin Lagoon. Chara connivens occurred at shallow (0.5–1.2 m) sandy-muddy and muddy bottoms of small embayments. In the Vistula Lagoon, the stonewort was represented by single small specimens, while in the Szczecin Lagoon, it formed dense and extensive patches.

Opis:
The aim of the present paper is to show the impact of the diversity of social capital of the international sailing environment on the development of tourist services around the Szczecin Lagoon and Dąbie Lake. The target group are Polish and German participants in nautical tourism in the cross-border research area. Materials for the article were collected during field studies conducted in 2009–2012. The questionnaire method was mainly used to obtain information. The paper uses elements of social capital for the purpose of creating the image of the place and promotional activities of the region. The sources of capital were: motivations for sailing, additional leisure time activities, form of sailing activity, individual choice of a place of rest as well as the most frequently chosen domestic and international destinations, as well as personal data like gender, age and nationality of respondents. Understanding capital as a resource allowed it to be used for the development of the research area. The analysis of the research results allowed to specify one characteristic which was positively evaluated by two groups of respondents and these are landscape conditions of the Szczecin Lagoon. Contact with nature turned out to be the most important motivation for sailing. On the other hand, the heterogeneity of the Polish and German sailing environment is clear in the context of age, sailing qualifications, property status, which determines the direction of cruises undertaken and other activities accompanying sailing. All the above-mentioned elements of social capital bring benefits for the research area, observed in the economic and social dimension. Based on them, promotional and infrastructural changes were proposed for the needs of the tourist services sector, including, among others, nature, cultural or qualified tourism.

Opis:
The paper analyzes the influence of air mass movement on moving (the leeway) surface water in the Świnoujście–Szczecin fairway region on the Szczecin Lagoon. The Szczecin Lagoon includes waters of the Odra River estuary (Poland’s second largest river) and the southern Baltic Sea. To calculate the leeway parameters, a relevant surface drifter was outlined and constructed. The data on the leeway of the drifter was obtained from in-situ experiments conducted on the Szczecin Lagoon in the summer of 2018. In turn, the air mass movement data was recorded at meteorological stations in Trzebież and Świnoujście. A statistical analysis of the leeway parameters of the drifter was also presented. Distributions of the leeway and wind speeds in the Świnoujście–Szczecin fairway regions were established. Moreover, linear regressions between the leeway and wind parameters were performed by decomposing the leeway into its downwind and crosswind components for each 10-minute sample. It is worth highlighting that relationships between these components of the leeway and wind parameters were studied for weak, medium, and stronger winds. This research may be useful for increasing navigation safety in the Świnoujście–Szczecin fairway regions on the Szczecin Lagoon.

Opis:
Following paper presents a new aspect of the study of submerged landscapes in the Szczecin Lagoon. This aspect is the importance of coastal processes for the conservation status of the sites and archaeological contexts. Underwater prospection can lead to collection of archaeological material of an entirely different character. These artifacts may in fact come from the destroyed land erosion processes (abrasion), and so – in terms of methodology of archeology – lie on the secondary deposit. Of course, cognitive value of such sources is very different than artifacts found in full context. However, there is possibility to use them not only to study archeology, but to assess the scale, pace and extent of coastal phenomena perceived as post-depositional processes.

A newcomer to the Baltic Sea, the Chinese mitten crab is especially abundant in the Szczecin Lagoon (NW Poland), where it was first reported in 1927. Body weight, and carapace width and length, were studied in 647 individuals collected with fyke nets in the Szczecin Lagoon from 30 March – 18 April2001 and from 5–21 November 2001. 51.01% of the 543 autumn specimens were males, but only 30.97% of the 113 spring specimens were males. Body weight varied from 45.1 to 306.5 g, carapace length from 41.07 to 81.02 mm and carapace width from 46.68 to 88.85 mm. The autumn crabs were significantly heavier than the spring specimens.

Selected biological and morphometric characters of two populations of the nonindigenous Chinese mitten crab, one from the Szczecin Lagoon (SL) and the other from San Francisco Bay (SFB),b oth sampled in autumn, were analysed. The SL crabs showed a significantly higher individual weight,l ength and carapace width. Males accounted for 55% (87 individuals) of the 179 SL crabs,an d 62.9% (90 individuals) of the SFB crabs. Statistical analysis of metric characters, expr essed as a percentage of carapace width (X2),en abled four diagnostic characters to be identified: abdomen width (X11),carapace height (X3),left claw length (X7) and carapace length (X1). These jointly explain 71.75% of the differences between the SL and SFB crabs and are indicative of the distinctness of the populations.

Opis:
In this study the activity of uranium isotopes 234U and 238U in Odra river water samples, collected from October 2003 to July 2004, was measured using alpha spectrometry. The uranium concentrations were different in each of the seasons analysed; the lowest values were recorded in summer. In all seasons, uranium concentrations were the highest in Bystrzyca river waters (from 27.81±0.29 Bq m−3 of 234U and 17.82±0.23 Bq m−3 of 238U in spring to 194.76±3.43 Bq m−3 of 234U and 134.88 ± 2.85 Bq m−3 of 238U in summer). The lowest concentrations were noted in the Mała Panew (from 1.33±0.02 Bq m−3 of 234U and 1.06±0.02 Bq m−3 of 238U in spring to 3.52 ± 0.05 Bq m−3 of 234U and 2.59 ± 0.04 Bq m−3 of 238U in autumn). The uranium radionuclides 234U and 238U in the water samples were not in radioactive equilibrium. The 234U/238U activity ratios were the highest in Odra water samples collected at Głogów (1.84 in autumn), and the lowest in water from the Noteć (1.03 in winter and spring). The 234U/238U activity ratio decreases along the main stream of the Odra, owing to changes in the salinity of the river’s waters. Annually, 8.19 tons of uranium (126.29 GBq of 234U and 100.80 GBq of 238U) flow into the Szczecin Lagoon with Odra river waters.
