    The essay starts with a discussion about language as the central medium of human communication. Language is the object of research within linguistics, that analyse its structure as well as its pragmatic and communicative character. But also literature and research in literature reflect about language, its prospects and also its limits of mutual understanding. Problems of communication often arise in intercultural environments, especially under the restraints of emigration or foreign rules. Nowadays problems increase because of tendencies of globalization, that require the learning of foreign languages, but also the acquaintance with foreign cultures. Under these circumstances foreign language teaching gets more and more important to procure intercultural communicative skills. Whereas the chances of literature appear to be rather limited on this field.

    The role of linguistics in language education has always been contested and has generated non-homogeneous opinions since the beginning of the existence of that discipline. This paper attempts to provide a broader examination of the interrelation between these two disciplines over the last few decades. Considerations are based on the example of German linguistics and the teaching of German as foreign language. It constitutes a contribution to the discourse on the identity and autonomy of language education as a science.

    Im Beitrag werden die linguistischen Ansätze angefangen von de Saussure, über Chomsky bis hin zu kartographischen Forschungen von Rizzi und Cinque diskutiert. Die Sprachwissenschaft wird nach den Befürwortern der generativen Transformationsgrammatik als ein Teil der Psychologie verstanden und auf das Mentale ausgerichtet. Es wird dabei auf die Darstellung der Geschichte der Linguistik verzichtet, stattdessen konzentriert sich der Beitrag auf die Grundlagen der Entstehung und Entwicklung der generativen Transformationsgrammatik. Anschließend werden die Grundsätze einer der jüngsten Theorien, und zwar des kartographischen Ansatzes angesprochen, der im Vergleich zum Minimalistischen Vergleich Chomskys eine erweiterte Struktur der funktionalen Kategorien postuliert und infolgedessen komplexere und gleichzeitig universal gültig propagierte syntaktische Hierarchien annimmt. Der CFC-Ansatz wurde in der Kartographie vielschichtiger ausgebaut und schlägt ein Projekt der funktionalen Projektionen dar.
    W artykule omówiono teorie lingwistyczne od de Saussure’a poprzez Chomsky’ego aż do modelu kartograficznego Rizzi’ego i Cinque’a. Według zwolenników gramatyki transformacyjno-generatywnej lingwistyka rozumiana jest jako część psychologii, ściśle związanej ze zjawiskiem mentalnym. W pracy pominięto opis historii lingwistyki, koncentrując się na podstawach powstawania i rozwoju gramatyki transformacyjno-generatywnej. Następnie przedstawiono jedną z najnowszych teorii, a mianowicie model kartograficzny, który w porównaniu z Programem Minimalistycznym Chomsky’ego postuluje rozszerzoną strukturę kategorii funkcjonalnych i w rezultacie zakłada bardziej rozbudowane struktury składniowe. Kartografia proponuje zatem rozszerzenie lewej peryferii i przedstawia rozwinięty projekt rzutowania kategorii funkcjonalnych.
    This article discusses linguistic approaches from de Saussure trough Chomsky to cartographic approach by Rizzi and Cinque. According to the proponents of transformational-generative grammar, linguistics is understood as a part of the psychology and is oriented towards the mental. The article focuses on the evolution of transformational-generative grammar. Furthermore the principles of one of the most recent theories, namely the cartographic approach were presented, which, in comparison to Chomsky’s Minimalist Program, postulates an extended structure of the functional categories and consequently assumes more complex and universally valid propagated syntactic hierarchies. The CFC in cartography has become more complex and this new approach proposes a project of functional projections. The author presents the evolution of transformational-generative grammar. The study ends with a summary of principles of one of the last theories, the cartographic approach.

    Der Artikel greift das Thema der philosophischen Aspekte im Schaffen von William Faulkner auf. Der erste Teil ist ein Versuch, über den Ort der Philosophie in der Literatur nachzudenken. Es werden unterschiedliche Meinungen solcher Autoren wie Iris Murdoch, Martha Nussbaum, Philip Kitcher dargestellt. Der zweite Teil des Artikels konzentriert sich auf ausgewählten Werken von Faulkner und bildet den Versuch, sein Schaffen unter dem Gesichtspunkt von seinen Beziehungen zur Philosophie zu betrachten. Die Hauptthese des Artikels lautet, dass Faulkners Romane nicht nur wesentliche philosophische Fragen aufgreifen, sondern auch selbst den Stoff zur gegenwärtigen philosophischen Reflexion anbieten. Obwohl die Beziehung Faulkners zur Ethik, Philosophie der Sprache, Metaphysik oder schließlich Religion unbestritten ist, bleibt dieser Faden in der Forschungsliteratur zu seinem Schaffen immer noch marginal. Ebenso selten wird der unbestreitbare Beitrag Faulkners zum Existentialismus sowie die Achtung betont, die ihm Sartre oder Camus entgegenbrachten. Der Artikel will Faulkner den ihm gebührenden Platz unter den Schriftstellern, die in ihrem Schaffen philosophische Fragen aufwerfen, wiederherstellen, wenn nicht neu bestimmen.
    This article raises the problem of philosophical aspects of William Faulkner’s works. It is intended first of all to review in brief the place of philosophy in literature and to prove that William Faulkner deserves a special place among philosophical writers such as Kierkegaard, Marcel and Sartre. Although not sufficiently recognized as a philosophical writer, William Faulkner is among those who have successfully introduced philosophical ideas into their novels. This article intends to bear out that Faulkner’s novels do not only consider some fundamental philosophical concepts but also open the door to further philosophical debates. The first, shortest part of this work is a presentation of the philosophical discussion concerning the fusion of philosophy and literature. There, the focus is on the negative and positive approaches to the issue of combining philosophy and literature as represented by such prominent philosophers as Iris Murdoch, Jacquelyne Kegley, Martha Nussbaum and Philip Kitcher. In its second part, the article presents William Faulkner’s philosophical affiliations of interest, which are: metaphysics, linguistics, ethics, religion and existentialism. The conclusion stresses Faulkner’s input into philosophy but also indicates different fields his novels open for further philosophical investigation.
    Artykuł podejmuje temat filozoficznych aspektów twórczości Williama Faulknera. Pierwsza, krótsza jego część, jest próbą zastanowienia się nad miejscem filozofii w literaturze. Tutaj właśnie przedstawione są różne stanowiska, tak znanych filozofów jak Iris Murdoch, Martha Nussbaum, czy Philip Kitcher. Druga część artykułu koncentruje się na wybranych utworach Faulknera i jest próbą analizy twórczości tego wielkiego powieściopisarza pod kątem jego afiliacji z filozofią. Główną myślą artykułu jest teza, iż powieści Faulknera nie tylko podejmują fundamentalne kwestie filozoficzne, ale wciąż stanowią materiał dla współczesnego namysłu filozoficznego .Choć związek Faulknera z etyką, filozofią języka, metafizyką, czy wreszcie religią jest niezaprzeczalny, ten wątek opracować filozoficzno-krytycznych jego twórczości pozostaje wciąż marginalny. Rzadko kiedy akcentuje się również niezaprzeczalny wkład Faulknera do egzystencjalizmu i estymę, jaką darzyli go chociażby Sartre, czy Camus. Można więc śmiało powiedzieć, że artykuł ten jest próbą przywrócenia (jak nie ustanowienia) należnego Faulknerowi miejsca wśród innych pisarzy podejmujących w swojej twórczości kwestie filozoficzne.
