Opis:
In the years 2000 and 2001 observations of meteorological conditions were carried by expeditions of Adam Mickiewicz University in the vicinity of Petunia Bay (Billefjorden, Central Spitsbergen). The meteorological station Skottehytta (78°42,98?N and 16°36,68?E) is located about 50 m of the sea-side, on a rised marine terrace, 5 m a.s.l. The presented database includes the comparison of 30 days period between 10th July and 8th August in both years and a set of values of the whole expedition in 2001 (7th July - 17th September). Observations carried by an automatic station and in five terms a day cycle covered: atmospheric pressure, air temperature, relative humidity, visibility, degree of cloudiness, precipitation, wind speed and direction. The analysis, performed mainly on daily means, partly on maximum values of selected elements and in the case of precipitation on daily totals, showed a confirmation of general characteristics presented in other papers concerning the area under study. In this a slight rise of air temperatures over a multiyear average, low level of precipitation but an increase in the frequency of heavy precipitation events. Wind conditions of the inner-fjord area are strictly connected with local orography, causing frequent foehn-effects. Processes which are described on the example of Petunia Bay can also illustrate the characteristics of global climatic changes, which are clearly visible in high latitudes of Northern Hemisphere.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of meteorological measurements carried out in the Kaffioyra Plain in the summer season of 2001 and in the period form July 2001 to April 2002. The main meteorological observations were conducted in N.Copernicus Polar Station. situated in northern part of the Kaffioyra (NW Spitsbergen). The paper also presents the results of snow accumulation measurements on the Waldemar Glacier and Irene Glacier. which are located at Kaffioyra Region. The mean air temperature in the summer period (21.07. to 31.08.2001) was 5.9°C and was visibly higher then the long-term average. The sum of precipitation in this time was 37 mm and was lowest then the long-term average. The comparison between summer season 2001 and mean values from the years 1975-2001 in the common period shows that this season was characterised by air temperature higher then many year?s values. The mean air temperature in the period from July 2001 to April 2002 was -5.3°C. The highest monthly air temperature was in August (5.2°C) and the lowest was in March (-14.7°C). The sum of precipitation in the time with snow cover at Kaffioyra was 86.6 mm. Investigations of a snow cover on the Kaffioyra have been carried out in two points. Snow cover on the Kaffioyra was started to form in the end of September. Winter snow accumulation equal to 91 cm in point B and 18 cm in point B. The changes of snow thickness was depended from a velocity of wind. Investigations of a snow cover on the Waldemar Glacier and the Irene Glacier have been carried out form September 2001 to April 2002. The Waldemar Glacier and Irene Glacier are located in the northern part of the Oscar II Land (Northwestern Spitsbergen). In spite of small areas of these glaciers. there is great spatial variation in snow deposition. During the winter 2002 the highest snow accumulation of the Waldemar Glacier was noted in the northern part of the glacier. both on its accumulation part and at foot of Grafjellet which surrounds the glacier from the south. The lowest thickness of a snow cover was observed at terminus of the glacier and at foot of the medial moraine (up to 40 cm w.e.). On the Irene Glacier the highest snow accumulation was observed in two accumulation parts (up to 120 cm w.e.). The lowest thickness of a snow cover was observed at terminus of the glacier and at central part of glacier (up to 20 cm w.e.). Winter snow accumulation of the Waldemar Glacier was equal to 63.2 cm w.e. On the Irene glacier it was similar and equal to 64.7 cm w.e.

Opis:
W artykule zostały zaprezentowane rezultaty pomiarów meteorologicznych przeprowadzonych w południowej części Ziemi Wedela Jarlsberga, SW Spitsbergen w roku 2009. Pomiary były prowadzone na czterech stanowiskach: na terasie morskiej (PSP), morenie bocznej lodowca (WER) i na lodowcu: w strefie akumulacji (HT9) i poniżej linii równowagi (HT4). Informacje o wartościach elementów meteorologicznych zostały wykorzystane do oceny warunków biotermiczno-meteorologicznych jakie występowały w tych typach terenu.
Presented paper is focused on the meteorological and biometeorological conditions observed in south part of the Wedel Jarslberg Land (SW Spitsbergen) in 2009. Meteorological data used in presented study were collected in four locations: at the Polish Polar Station (PSP: 77.00159°N 15.54131°E, 10 m a.s.l.), lateral moraine of Werenskiold Glacier (WER: 77.07101°N, 15.17852°E, 31 m a.s.l.), middle part of Hans Glacier below equlibium line (HT4: 77.04738°N, 15.63275°E, 180 m a.s.l.) and accumulation’s zone of Hans Glacier (HT9: 77.11656°N, 15.48781°E, 430 m a.s.l.). The average air temperature registered in 2009 was -2.7°C and it is one of the warmest year from starting of the meteorological observations at the Polish Polar Station in 1978. The last two months (November and December) were exceptional: with almost 6°C higher monthly average of air temperature (in comparison with average from 1983 to 2006). Meteorological data as: air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and solar irradiation were used for calculating the following biometeorological indexes: wind chill index (WCI), subjective temperature index (according to Błażejczyk; STI), man-environment heat exchange fluxes (mC, mE, mRes), radiation and total heat exchange balances (mQ, mS). A significant variety of the biometeorological stimuli at investigated area were observed: in lateral moraine (WER) the most often “comfortable” conditions occurred – up to 34% of the time of August – if wind chill index is taken into account – while this class of thermal feelings at HT4 location is rare (less than 1% of the time of August). The high value of negative heat balance of man exposed to meteorological conditions at the Hans glacier during winter could be danger for human body, if no special arctic wear is used.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono porównanie warunków meteorologicznych w sezonie letnim 2005 r. na podstawie danych zebranych w trakcie trwania polskich wypraw polarnych do Hornsundu, Calypsobyen, doliny Ebby i Kaffiöyry.
The paper presents the data concerning the spatial diversification of meteorological conditions occurring on the western coast of Spitsbergen during the summer season of 2005. For the analysis daily data have been used from four Polish stations (Kaffiöyra - KH, Ebby valley - EBB, Calypsobyen - CAL and Hornsund - HOR) and two Norwegian stations (Ny Ĺlesund - NYA, Svalbard Lufthavn - SVA), mainly for the common period of observation (from 21st July to 31st August) (Fig. 1). The Hornsund station was used as a reference station. Differences have been computer for all the analysed meteo-rological variables between stations for every 24-hour period, ten- / eleven-day period, and for the common period of observations as a whole (the meterological variables analysed include air pressure (AP), wind speed (v), cloudiness (C), sunshine duration (SS), maximum daily temperature (Tmax), mean daily temperature (Ti), minimum daily temperature (Tmin), relative humidity (f), and atmospheric precipitation (P)) (Table 1, Fig. 2, Fig. 5). All results proved that the spatial diversification of almost all analysed variables is significant. It is very evident that in the summer the degree of climate continentality has a greater influence on this diversification than the geographical latitude. Local topography plays also important role in the diversification of meteorological variables on the western coast of Spitsbergen. A good example of this influence is presented in Figure 4, showing different kinds of wind roses. It can be seen that winds from different directions dominate in each station. Mean daily courses of some selected meteorological variables (Fig. 3) also show that spatial diversification is varied throughout the day. For example, greater differences are noted during "night" hours for atmospheric pressure and wind speed, while an opposite relation exists for air temperature and relative humidity. Extreme values of analysed meteorological variables during the common period of observation (from 21st July to 31st August 2005) are shown in Table 2. The highest temperature (13.1°C) occurred in Svalbard Lufthavn located in the most continental part of Spitsbergen, while the lowest (0.5°C) was in the Hornsund region, where cyclones bringing thick clouds are very common. Day-to-day variabilities of the majority of the analysed meteorological variables on the west coast of Spitsbergen are quite large (Table 3).

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono charakterystykę warunków meteorologicznych w północnej części Kaffiøyry (NW Spitsbergen, rys. 1) w sezonach letnich (21 VII – 31 VIII) w okresie 2012-2014 (tab. 1, rys. 2-9). Pomiary i obserwacje meteorologiczne prowadzono w ogródku meteorologicznym zlokalizowanym w pobliżu stacji polarnej UMK na morenie czołowo-bocznej Lodowca Aavatsmarka (φ=78°4’N, λ=11°51’E, h=11,5 m n.p.m.). Wykonywano je 4 razy na dobę, w terminach 00, 06, 12, 18 UTC (01, 07, 13, 19 LMT). W artykule uzyskane wyniki porównano z wieloletnimi wartościami większości elementów meteorologicznych obliczonymi z kilkudziesięciu sezonów letnich, w których zorganizowano Toruńskie Wyprawy Polarne w okresie 1975-2014 (tab. 1). W sezonach letnich 2012-2014 stwierdzono większą prędkość wiatru (5,3 m·s-1 w stosunku do 4,6 m·s-1 w wieloleciu 1975-2014). (6,1 m·s-1). Świadczy to o wzroście działalności cyklonalnej na obszarze Spitsbergenu. Oprócz wiatru znaczącym zmianom podległy także wszystkie parametry temperatury powietrza (tab. 1). (tab. 1). Pozostałe elementy wymawiane w artykule nie wykazały większych zmian w porównaniu do danych wieloletnich.
This article provides the characteristics of meteorological conditions in the north of Kaffiøyra (NW Spitsbergen, Fig. 1) in the summer seasons (21 July – 31 August) of 2012-2014 (Table 1, Figs 2-9). The observations and measurements were carried out at a meteorological site located near the NCU Polar Station on the terminal-lateral moraine of the Aavatsmark Glacier (φ=78°4’N, λ=11°51’E, h=11.5 m a.s.l.). The measurements were taken four times per day at 00:00, 06:00, 12:00 and 18:00 UTC (01:00, 07:00, 13:00 and 19:00 LMT). In this article, the obtained results are compared with multi-annual values of most meteorological elements obtained from a few dozen summer seasons, during which Toruń Polar Expeditions were organised in the years 1975-2014 (Table 1). In the summer seasons of 2012-2014, the observed wind speed was greater than in the years 1975-2014 (5.3 m· s-1 vs. 4.6 m·s-1, respectively). This was mainly due to its increased speed in the summer of 2012 (6.1 m·s-1) and it is also an indication of intensified cyclonic activity in the area of Spitsbergen at the time. Besides the wind, all other parameters of air temperature were also subject to considerable changes (Table 1). The maximum temperature of air increased the most (by 0.8 oC), whereas the change in minimum temperature was the smallest (only by 0.4 oC). A substantial increase in the mean diurnal amplitude of air temperature by 0.5 oC is also noteworthy. The warming of the climate of Kaffiøyra is accompanied by greater precipitation, which in the years 2012-2014 slightly exceeded 150% of its respective amount for 1975-2014 (Table 1). The other meteorological elements analysed in this article do not show any major changes as compared with the long-term data.

We present results of measurements of aerosol physical properties conducted on board of r/v Oceania during two cruises to the Spitsbergen region in 2014 (AREX 2014) and 2015 (AREX 2015). Measurements of aerosol size distribution, aerosol scattering coefficient and black carbon concentrations were made in two different Spitsbergen fjords: Hornsund and Kongsfjorden. The aerosol size distribution was measured in the size range from 0.09 μm to 47 μm using two aerosol size distribution spectrometers and a standard condensation particle counter. For the scattering coefficient an integrating nephelometer was used. Black carbon concentration was measured by an aethalometer. Temporal variabilities in physical properties of aerosol observed during the AREX 2014 and AREX 2015 campaigns were much higher than the differences between both fjords. The basic factors influencing aerosol conditions were advection and local generation of marine aerosol. In 2015 an episode of smoke advection was observed in both fjords causing an increase in the mean black carbon concentration from 7–12 ng m−3 to about 60 ng m−3, and an aerosol scattering coefficient at 550 nm from 2–4 Mm−1 to 12–17 Mm−1. Moreover, under certain conditions statistically significant gradients in aerosol optical properties were observed along the fjord axis reflecting an impact of mountains surrounding the fjords.

Opis:
W artykule dokonano charakterystyki warunków meteorologicznych i biometeorologicznych w rejonie Hornsundu w okresie ciepłym (od 1 czerwca do 30 września) w roku 2007 i 2008. Wyko-rzystano m.in. cztery wskaźniki biometeorologiczne: wskaźnik ochładzania wiatrem (WCI), przewidywaną termo-izolacyjność odzieży (Iclp), wielkość ochładzającą powietrza (H) oraz temperaturę odczuwalną (STI).
In the paper meteorological and biometeorological conditions in the region of Hornsund during the warm season are discussed. The measurements of meteorological and biometeorological para-meters were carried out from 1st June to 30th September 2007 and 2008 at four points: Hornsund (HOR, ö = 77°00’N, ë = 15°33’E, 10 m above sea level), Fugle (FUG, ö = 77°01’ N, ë = 15°34’ E, 568 m above sea level), as well as at middle (HT4, ö = 77°04’ N, ë = 15°63’ E, 184 m above sea level) and firnal (HT9, ö = 77°11’ N, ë = 15°48’ E, 421 above sea level) parts of Hans Glacier (Fig. 1). Spatial differentiation of biometeorological conditions were studied in relation to altitude, ground cover and distance from the sea shore. To define biometeorological conditions the following indices were used: subjective temperature (STI), cooling power (H), wind chill index (WCI) and insulation predicted (Iclp). Significant temporal and spatial differences in studied indices were found. The most severe stimuli were observed at the glacier (HT4 and HT9) and in the mountains (FUG). However, relatively mild conditions were noted during sunny hours. We have also observed close relationships between meteorological elements and biometeorolo-gical indices and atmospheric circulation. The greatest possibility of unfavourable thermal sensations occurs during air advection from N-NNW-NW. The mildest conditions can be expected at advection from SW and W.

This paper describes influence of air masses advection on meteorological elements in Hornsund (SW Spitsbergen) from 1991 to 2000. Air temperature, wind speed, relative humidity and precipitation occurrence were considered. First three variables were classified as a system of three classes. First class consists of elements below 25% percentile (under normal), third contains values above 75% percentile (above normal). Second class contains values between first and third threshold values (normal). Precipitation was classified using two-class system which describes if it occurs or not. All statistics are presented for three periods. First for all, for year term, next for polar day (24th April to 18th September) and in the end for polar night (31st October to 11th February). Reduced classification of circulation types by Niedźwiedź (2004) was used as a circulation index. Warm days (3WFR) with strong wind (T3FR) and precipitation occurrence (TWF1) exhibited the highest frequency in cyclonic E+SE situation for whole year period. High humidity (TW3R) dominated with cyclonic circulation from S+SW. Cold weather (1WFR) with low humidity (TW1R) was characteristic for N+NE advection, both cyclonic and anticyclonic. Central high situation (Ca+Ka) and also cyclonic advection from N+NE were typical for days with weak wind (T1FR) and no precipitation (TWF0). During polar day warm days (3WFR) had the highest occurrence in cyclonic advection from E+SE and S+SW. The highest frequency of strong wind days was noted with advection from E+SE, in both kind of air masses. High humidity (TW3R) weather was formed under the influence of cyclonic oceanic air masses from S+SW. Precipitation occurrence (TWF1) was mostly connected with situation Cc+Bc but in S+SWc situation accounted for almost 100% days. Cold days (1WFR) with weak wind (T1FR), low humidity (TW1R) and without precipitation were characteristic for situation with the highest frequency during polar day (Ca+Ka). During polar night warm days (3WFR) with high humidity (TW3R) had the highest frequency in cyclonic S+SW advection. Situation E+SEc was typical for days with strong wind (T3FR) and precipitation (TWF1). There weren't any days without precipitation occurrence at S+SWc advection. Cold days (1WFR) with weak wind (T1FR), low humidity (TW1R) and without precipitation were determined with the lowest frequency by cyclonic advection from N+NE.

Opis:
Results of meteorological and biometeorological investigation in polar region are the aim of presented paper. Investigated area is located in SW part of Spitsbergen (surrounding of Hornsund fjord) where operate the Polish Polar Station. Data used in the paper were collected in 2010 by an automatic weather stations (measured parameters: air temperature and relative humidity, wind speed and direction, global and reflected solar radiation) located: at the Polish Polar Station (PSP: 77.00159 N 15.54131 E, 10 m a.s.l.), middle part of Hans Glacier below equilibrium line (HT4: 77.04738 N 15.63275 E, 180 m a.s.l.) and accumulation's zone of Hans Glacier (HT9: 77.11656 N 15.48781 E, 430 m a.s.l.). Only a peak of Fugleberget (FUG 77.02008 N 15.56587 E, 568 m a.s.l.) were equipped with air temperature and relative humidity logger HOBO Pro series. Biometeorological conditions of investigated area were evaluated by Wind Chill Index, analysis of man-environment heat exchange fluxes and Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI; new developed tool for biometeorological investigation). Above indices identified accumulation zone as a place with specific biometeorological condition: average values of UTCI and WCI indicate mildest biothermal environment. However, in this area highest biometeorological stimuli are observed. Weather condition of SW Spitsbergen is strongly modified by atmospheric circulation. In 2010 air masses flowed from north sector were observed (36% days) twice often than from south.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of meteorological measurements carried out in the Kaffioyra Plain in the summer season of 2003. The main meteorological observations were conducted in N.Copernicus Polar Station, situated in northern part of the Kaffioyra (NW Spitsbergen). The paper also presents the results of ablation measurements on the Waldemar Glacier and Irene Glacier, which are located at Kaffioyra Region. The mean air temperature in the summer period (21.07. to 31.08.2003) was 6.1°C and was visibly higher then the long-term average. The sum of precipitation in this time was 74 mm and was higher then the long-term average. The comparison between summer season 2003 and mean values from the years 1975-2003 in the common period shows that this season was characterised by air temperature higher then many year?s values. The Waldemar Glacier and Irene Glacier are located in the northern part of the Oscar II Land, northwestern Spitsbergen. In spite of small areas of these glaciers, there is great spatial variation of ablation. Both Waldemar Glacier and Irene Glacier area and the height difference between the accumulation zone and the ablation area are relatively small. Nevertheless, spatial variation of ablation is observed. In this summer season the highest ablation values of Waldemar Glacier were noted in the ablation area of the glacier up to the altitude of about 250 m a.s.l., as well as at the foot of its medial moraine. The highest ablation values of Irene Glacier were noted in the ablation area of the glacier up to the altitude of about 300 m a.s.l.. During the analysed season a high average air temperature was observed. It resulted in increased ablation if compared to the previous seasons. Average air temperature and local glacier conditions were accepted as the main factors of ablation. The glacier average total summer ablation of Waldemar Glacier was 118.1 cm w.e. And Irene Glacier 111.1 cm w.e., respectively. The main meteorological parameters, which have an influence on ablation, are air temperature, wind velocity, insolation and participation. But it must be stressed that these parameters are clearly determined by local conditions of glaciers such as hypsometry, solar exposition, slope as well as density and the course of supraglacial streams.

Opis:
Air temperature and precipitation conditions in the Kaffiøyra region in the summer season (21st July–31st August) for the period of 1975–2010 are described: 1) on the basis of data gathered in 18 expeditions during which meteorological measurements were done, and 2) on the basis of complete series of data combining both original and reconstructed data. The latter ones were obtained using data from Ny Ålesund meteorological station, which are strongly correlated with the data from Kaffiøyra. Seasonal statistics presented for air temperature and precipitation based on these two sets of data reveal only slight changes. Temperature parameters (daily mean, maximum and minimum) for summer in Kaffiøyra in the study period (1975–2010) show upward trends, which are, however, statistically significant only for the daily mean. On the other hand, precipitation totals in the study period reveal a downward trend, but not statistically significant. Such thermal-precipitation behaviour in the study part of Spitsbergen in general terms is similar to those in other parts of Spitsbergen.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of a comparison of basic meteorological parameters in two Arctic fjords situated on the west coast of Spitsbergen, the main island of the Svalbard archipelago. Air temperature, wind speed and direction, humidity and cloud cover from the period 2005 to 2016 are described and compared with previous (from 1975) analyses of meteorological conditions in the investigated region. Such a choice of dates coincides with the time the GAME project measurements were carried out. The main goal of this study was to compare meteorological conditions in two fjords: Hornsund and Kongsfjorden, during the time of rapid climate changes. The results are collated with research results available in literature from previous years. We discovered that in the investigated period the climate of the Hornsund region is more oceanic than in Kongsfjorden. The stable level of the difference in climate elements is manifested and is evident mainly through greater amplitudes in air temperatures in Kongsfjorden, and in stronger winds in Hornsund.
