    The author of the presented article focused his attention on the subject of the views of Saint Augustine on the question of the possibility of remarriage. His analyses show that the bishop of Hippo stood heavily against enabling people to remarry, even in the case of adultery by one of the parties. Such an opinion resulted from the principle assumptions of the bishop’s theory of marriage, especially concerning sacramentality, marital fidelity and indissolubility of marriage.Saint Augustine strongly opposed the solutions adopted in the Roman law which allowed remarriage. Against the laws of this legal order which justified immoral deeds of a man while not justifying such deeds of a woman, he stood clearly for equality of husband and wife in this matter. Therefore, he was definitely against remarriage.

    The author analyzes Saint Augustine sentence “Love and then what you will, do”. The sentence is being studied in the context of Augustine teaching about the role of love in human moral acting. The article presents the arguments supporting a thesis that love is a necessary attribute of a good moral acting. The authentic value of a human act derives from “root of love”. The final part of the article presents two contemporary points of view (E. Gilson, P. Agaësse) which are confronted with the quoted sentence.

    Przedmiotem artykułu jest pojęcie wolnej woli zaprezentowane przez św. Augustyna w niektórych jego pismach. W pierwszej części artykułu przedstawiam pogląd Augustyna dotyczący struktury ludzkiej duszy. Kładę nacisk na fakt, że według Augustyna nasza wolna wola jest jednocześnie czymś różnym od rozumu i pamięci, ale również jest identyczna z duszą oraz podmiotem moralnym. W drugiej części przedstawiam wybrane charakterystyczne cechy związane z ludzką wolą i wolnością, na przykład: chcenie, bycie sprawcą, odpowiedzialność, autodeterminacja. Następnie omawiam dwie interpretacje augustyńskiej koncepcji grzechu pierworodnego (W.S. Babcocka i Scotta C. MacDonalda). Próbuję pokazać, że pierwsza z nich przyjmowała zbyt mocne pojęcie ciągłości między dyspozycjami, intencjami podmiotu a aktami jego woli, z kolei druga traktowała wolność w zbyt intelektualistyczny sposób. Ostatecznie omawiam woluntarystyczne wątki w augustyńskiej teorii szczęścia.
    The subject matter of this article is the concept of free will presented in some of Saint Augustine’s works. In the first part, I present Augustine’s view about the structure of the human soul. I emphasize that, according to Augustine, our free will is both distinct from reason and memory, and identical to the soul and the moral agent. In the second part, I provide an overview of the selected features that are connected with human will and freedom, for example: (1) wanting, (2) being an agent, (3) responsibility, (4) auto-determination. Next, I investigate two interpretations of Augustine’s concept of the original sin (by W.S. Babcock and by Scott C. MacDonald). I try to demonstrate that the first one assumed a too strong concept of the continuity between the dispositions, intentions of the agent and his/her acts of will, while the second one treated freedom in a too intellectualistic manner. Eventually, I discuss the voluntaristic components of Augustine’s theory of happiness.

    W artykule tym zaprezentowane zostały wybrane uwagi na temat późnoantycznej społeczności chrześcijan Kościoła Afryki rzymskiej w relacji św. Augustyna. Odwołując się do dzieł biskupa Hippony, mogliśmy zanalizować pewien wycinek obrazu społeczeństwa rzymskiego w prowincji afrykańskiej dotyczący kwestii stosunków religijnych w ówczesnych strukturach kościelnych. Nie jest to obraz pełny, zajęliśmy się w tym miejscu tylko wybranymi zagadnieniami, ponieważ kolekcja źródeł Augustyna jest nader bogata i mimo wielości opracowań na ten temat, wciąż można odkrywać nowe zagadnienia czy problemy, bądź też analizować opracowane już na nowy sposób. W powyższym artykule zajęliśmy się kwestiami związanymi z duchowieństwem afrykańskim, przebiegiem liturgii, ogólnie pojętym laikatem i jego służbą kościelną oraz stosunkami religijnymi, zawężonymi do zagadnień herezji i schizm. Sam temat podjęty przez nas w artykule wymaga dalszych badań, jednak przedstawione powyżej wnioski pozwalają stwierdzić, że mimo problemów z gospodarką w III wieku, kryzysami, uzurpacjami, a nade wszystko z herezjami, schizmami i koniunkturalnymi nawróceniami, Kościół afrykański w czasach św. Augustyna rozwijał się dobrze, a próby walki z problemami podejmował charyzmatyczny biskup Hippony, wspierany przez hierarchię kościelną. 
    This article presents selected remarks that St Augustine made on the late-classical Christian community of the Church in Roman. Looking at the writings of the bishop of Hippo we can analyse a certain section of Roman society in the African province, especially the question of the confessional relations in the Church structures of those days. However, this is not a complete image and we are able to deal only with some selected topics here. This is due to the fact that the collection of the Augustine sources is very complex and despite the numerous studies on this subject, new doubts and questions still arise. The paper contains a study of the African clergy, the liturgical rite, the laity in general and its ecclesiastical functions as well as the religious tensions caused by heresies and schisms. Undoubtedly the subject itself requires further research, yet the conclusions presented in the article allow us to say that despite the economic problems in the third century, the crises, the usurpations of power and, above all, the heresies, the schisms and the opportunistic conversions, the African Church in the time of St. Augustine was developing well. The charismatic bishop of Hippo was doing his best to tackle all these difficulties with the support of his clergy.

    Artykuł dotyczy próby przedstawienia problemu jednoczesnej sprawiedliwości i grzeszności człowieka wierzącego (simul iustus et peccator) w takim świetle, aby skutecznie dążyć do przełamania ekumenicznego impasu w tej materii i widzieć w perspektywie czasu zarysowującą się jedność obu wspólnot chrześcijańskich, nie pomijając obu tradycji. Jest to próba odpowiedzi, w jaki sposób katolicy i luteranie powinni podejść do istoty zagadnienia oraz do nauczania w tym względzie. Ponieważ źródłem komplikacji jest różne rozumienie pojęcia grzechu, analiza przebiega pod kątem pożądliwości oraz przy zastosowaniu metody opinii teologicznej. Problem jest przedstawiony w kontekście historycznym i teologicznym, począwszy od św. Augustyna, przez Marcina Lutra, głównego obrońcę i propagatora tej idei, a także w dokumentach Soboru Trydenckiego, aż do katolicko–luterańskiego dialogu w drugiej połowie XX wieku. Ciekawe komentarze na ten temat można znaleźć u Karla Rahnera, w dokumentach Soboru Watykańskiego II, a zwłaszcza we Wspólnej deklaracji w sprawie nauki o usprawiedliwieniu podpisanej przez katolików i ewangelików, szczególnie pod względem usprawiedliwienia grzesznika.
    The article concerns the attempt to present the issue of simultaneous righteousness and sinfulness of the believer (simul iustus et peccator) in that light, in order to effectively seek to break the deadlock in the ecumenical issue and see in the long term the apparent unity of the two Christian communities, while not ignoring both traditions. It is an attempt to answer the question how the Catholics and Lutherans should approach the heart of the matter, and how to teach in this regard, to compensate for the ongoing disparity and division of Churches. For this reason, the source of complication lies in different understanding of the concept of sin by the two churches, the analysis proceeds in terms of desires and using the method of theological statement. The problem is shown in the context of the historical and theological ranging from St. Augustine, a precursor to the study, through Martin Luther, the main defender and propagator of this idea, also the documents of the Council of Trent, until the Catholic–Lutheran dialogue in the second half of the twentieth century. Interesting comments on this topic can be found in Karl Rahner, in the documents of the Second Vatican Council, especially in Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification signed by Catholics and Lutherans, especially in terms of justified sinfulness.
