Opis:
Barchans are characterized by a symmetric shape independently of their stage of development and the axis of symmetry parallels to the dominant wind direction. However, shape of the dunes can be modified by several factors, among which most important are: change of wind regime, dune collisions or interaction of closely spaced dunes, ground surface relief, asymmetric sediment supply. The aim of the study was to analyze the impact of short-term (diurnal) and long-term (seasonal) changes in wind direction and velocity on shape of barchan dunes. The study was conducted in southern Moroccan area of Western Sahara, between Tarfaya and Laâyoune. This area is characterised by significant variability of active wind (RDP/DP=0,66) which is unfavourable for barchans development. Measurements were conducted in two spring seasons of 2011 and 2012 and two autumn seasons of 2007 and 2011. 52 isolated barchans were selected for detailed studies. Based on GPS-RTK measurements, precise 3D models of the landforms were obtained allowing the detailed analysis of dune shapes. Changes of basie morphological parameters were analyzed as well as shape changes occurring the windward slope and within dunes horns. The shapes of the barchans were correlated with the short-term and the long-term wind regime. It was found that basic morphological parameters are not good indicators of wind variability, with the exception of barchan horns lengths which change according to the seasonal wind regime. Short-term wind regime changes are well registered by: i) "collars" developing along the dune crestlines, ii) "tongues" developing at the ends of dune horns and iii) location of the dune apex. On the other hand, beaded horns testify for very strong wind. I was found, that mentioned features develop and undergo modification during first days or even hours of changed wind regime. The analyzes of barchan shapes, performed in different seasons, proved that even a several-month long period of highly diversified wind regime does not change basie shape of the barchans. Therefore, it can be inferred that barchans development does not depend exclusively on wind regime.

The article concerns the Sahel that is vast area between Sahara on North and Sudan on South. On this area, poor and unstable states (Senegal, Somalia, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, Sudan and Ethiopia) are situated. From the end of 60's to the end 80's of the 20th century the Sahel was the place of dramatic events caused mainly by economic and political factors connected with negative climatic changes (long droughts). This period has been characterized by war and bloody conflicts (e.g. in Darfur). The situation till nowadays did not improve and there are lack of perspectives to solve existing conflicts.

Opis:
The Salt played a vital role in the life of west African societies, including the land of Sudan, from the dawn of their early history. In some cases, it was even more valuable than gold because of the lack of salt in most Sudanic kingdoms, such as Ghana, Mali & Songhai. The most famous of these Salinas was known as Taghaza, in addition to Ulil & Tatantatal, etc. They were related to what is called salt-architecture. We took Taghaza as an example of this rare architecture. West Africans used salt to preserve food, for healing and even for building houses, mosques and city walls. As the city of Taghaza, currently located in Mali, is in the most famous salt region, it is considered to be the best model of a salty city in west Africa. Salt contributed to the Sahara trade, known as the trade of salt and gold. Salt was indispensable for most inhabitants of West Africa. They lived near e salt quarries and used it mainly to build their houses and any other constructions they need.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the impact of climatic and meteorological conditions on aeolian sand transport within barchans. The study area was located at Western Sahara, around the towns of Tarfaya and Laâyoune. Particular attention was paid to the factors that increase the moisture content of the surface and subsurface layers of sand dunes. It could be one of the important factors to have an influence on threshold wind velocity. Western Sahara dune fields are situated in the zone of the dominant wind direction from the northern sector, which determines the barchan dunes shape and orientation, as well as the supply of moisture from the Atlantic Ocean. The results of investigations confirm that dunes receive quite a lot of moisture from rainfall and such phenomena as fog as well. Studies have confirmed that the water supply from the fog is comparable to, or even exceeds the amount of water from rainfall in the area. Wetted surface layer reduces the transport of aeolian material, even in case of a wind speed greater than 4-5 ms⁻¹. The presence of fog and dew does not affect the moisture of the deeper sand layers, which occurs after rainfall. Analysis of aeolian sand transport within the barchan dunes in the areas such a Western Sahara, should not be therefore limited to the measurement of wind speed and its direction. It must include the investigations on other meteorological elements, especially air temperature and humidity conditions, responsible for the amount of atmospheric deposits on the dune surface.

Opis:
The study of the paper aims to present a solar power plant performances and economic benefits of 16.28 kWp grid-tied solar PV systems under the real outdoor conditions of Ghardaïa, located in semi-arid area of the Algeria desert. The main goal of this study is to investigate the effectiveness, suitability, feasibility and reliably of these plants on the level of desert areas and under the influence of harsh conditions (desert environment) in the first part. In the second part, the contribution of solar PV plant to conventional networks in the arid and semi-arid environment to assess the rate of integration. Based on experimental measurement data, the paper also shows economic benefits of three photovoltaic plants. It was found that from the first January to last August 2019, the total produced energy by all PV arrays was 171.422 MWh which supplied to the internal grid and while, the consumed energy by the URAER unit was 159,094 kWh. Approximately 10, 95 % of the 159,094 MWh energy consumed in the whole year is provided from the generated PV solar energy that is 17,422 MWh. The total energy fed to the internal grid has grown from 27 MWh in 05/04/2018 to a maximum of 67.28 MWh recorded in 31/10/2019. The rate of integration of solar energy by all PV arrays in the internal network of the URAER varied between 6, 60% in January and 22, 96% in April. The integration of this renewable energy generation into the local grid in the URAER unit considered satisfactory over this period of operation. From the first January to last August 2019, the cost of electrical energy produced by solar plants is 2090,64 euro(277706,68 Algerian dinars) while the cost of energy consumed by the Applied Research Unit in renewable energies is 4772,82 euro(664853,826 Algerian dinars).

The fossiliferous Upper Varswater Formation at Langebaanweg (South Africa) produced remains of at least five species of owls (Strigiformes). Tyto richae sp. nov. is the first palaeospecies of Tytonidae described from an African fossil site, though indeterminate remains referable to the genus Tyto are known from the Middle Miocene of Morocco, the early Pliocene of Ethiopia, and the Pliocene of Tanzania. Athene inexpectata sp. nov. is not only the earliest documented fossil evidence for the genus worldwide, but also the first record of a species of Athene in Africa south of the Sahara. Proportions of its hind limb indicate that At. inexpectata sp. nov. probably has been as terrestrial as its modern relative At. cunicularia. A few additional remains represent the earliest fossil evidence for the genera Asio and Bubo on the African continent, though the poor preservation of these bones prevents more detailed identifications. A distal tibiotarsus of a small owl about the size of At. inexpectata sp. nov. indicates the presence of a fifth, as yet indeterminate, species of owl at Langebaanweg. Biogeographical and palaeoecological implications of this assemblage of owls are discussed.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to present a one-year performance analysis of four grid-connected PV systems installed at Ghardaia city in Algeria’s Sahara. The grid-connected PV systems are based on four different PV module technologies which are: monocrystalline silicon (m-Si), multi-crystalline silicon (mc-Si), cadmium telluride (Cd-Te) and amorphous (a-Si) PV module technologies. The PV systems based on the thin film technologies have their performance ratio better throughout the year when the performance ratio of the mc-Si technology is better in the winter season. The a-Si PV system has its performance ratio about 6.13 % more better than mc-Si and 8.90 % better than m-Si. The AC energy produced with the a-Si PV system is 13.32 % more than what the mc-Si system produces. It was found that the a-Si PV system performs better than the other technologies under the Saharan climate conditions of Ghardaia city. The energy payback time (EPBT) and greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions of the different PV systems were analyzed. The EPBT and GHG emissions per year, vary from a minimum value of 2.8 years to a maximum value of 5.73 years and from 13.24 tons to 32.03 tons of CO2/kWh for CdTe and m-Si respectively. The CdTe PV system performs better in terms of EPBT and GHG emissions compared to the other technologies (m-Si, mc-Si and a-Si) due to its low life cycle energy requirement.
