The aim of the article is to review Victor Pelevin’s works in terms of their critique of current social and political processes as well as various kinds of ideologies and theories. Despite the writer’s association with the group of postmodern artists he is not only focused on typically postmodern text games and playing with readers, his ambitions are also targeted at shaping their views and behaviors. The author of Generation “P” reacts vividly to the changing reality, he is a keen observer with ambitions to influence the world. He raises issues of universal nature, protesting against all ideological norms, social categories, standardizing fashions and stereotypes that enslave human beings, against all ways of manipulating human consciousness. His approach is constantly met with criticism of both pro-Western and traditionalist circles. The former accuse him of an overly skeptical attitude to the Western model of life, while the latter do not like the writer’s ironic approach to social reality, polemics with Russian values and attempts to discredit them.

The aim of the article is an attempt to analyze the problem of punishment in the Leo Tolstoy’s novel – Resurrection. The topic was examined from the perspective of hermeneutic circle, which allowed, by reference to the literary work, biography of the writer, and the epoch when he lived, to show how the problem of punishment is significant in his work. Tolstoy, whose basic law of human life is the mutual love between people, completely rejects the meaningfulness of the penitentiary system.

The article analyzes three pieces of Russian, Ukrainian and Polish contemporary literature on the subject of “the death in Venice”. The authors of the works, by referring to the literary tradition, consciously strengthen the myth of the "the city of death". In their interpretations this myth has two dimensions: the general and the individual. In the general dimension the vision of a dying beauty and fading power encourages reflection on the transitory nature of civilization. The individual dimension is based on the sense of identification of a dying character with a "dying" city, i.e. Venice.

Opis:
Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski and his Russian colleague Sergey Lukyanenko are considered to be two best-known living science-fiction and fantasy authors from their countries at the turn of the century. What is more, their popularity is not only connected with their homeland, but also spreads to other countries. As we can observe, Lukyanenko is the most important living Russian modern SF&F author in Poland, whereas Sapkowski is one of the best-known Polish contemporary writers in Russia (not only SF&F, but in general - right after Lem and Chmielewska). It is interesting to take a close look at their popularity and reveal how their works connect and influence many different branches of culture in Poland and Russia. It is impossible to take into consideration all of their works, so we concentrate on Sapkowski’s The Witcher saga and Lukyanenko’s four urban fantasy novels about The Night Watch and The Day Watch. On this basis we present their influence on such cultural areas as film, comic books and computer games. We also describe the reception of this influence and its results in Poland and Russia.

The author of the article analyses “Polish” pages of Daniel Stein, the translator, one of themost disputable novels written by Ulitskaya. Complicated life of frontier (eastern and western) Polish lands shown through life stories of the characters is dealt with. The subjective images ofPoland which appear in consciousness of the heroes are of the utmost importance for understandingthe ideology of the novel. In general the image of Poland in L.Ulitskaya’s novel is connectedwith semantics of losses, and the break of characters’ real connections with their homeland can beunderstood as the evidence of trouble, disintegration of integrity.

The present article is based on three literary rewritings of The Little Humpbacked Horse (Конёк-Горбунок, 1834): 1) The Tale of Knight Niezginek, the Self-cutting Sword and the Self-playing Gusli (Baśń o rycerzu Niezginku, mieczu samosieczu, i o gęślach samograjach) by Antoni Józef Gliński, 2) The Little Humpbacked Horse (Konik Garbusek) by Jan Brzechwa and 3) The Little Fatty Horse (O koniku Grubasku) by Jerzy Niemczuk. Gliński’s wonder tale appeared in 1853 in the second volume of The Polish Tale Teller, Brzechwa’s poem was presented in 1949 as a summary of Ivan Ivanov-Vano’s film and Niemczuk’s story was part of Mr. Mess’s Ring (Pierścień pana Bałagana) that came out in 1993. These works were therefore published in very different periods and literary contexts that had inevitable influence on writers’ approach to the Russian original.

Opis:
The present article regards the specificity of the realization of the Polish theme in N. Leskov’s prose. This element of the Russian writer’s artistic world is represented in his writing of the 1860s-1880s. N. Leskov had a personal experience of Poland which he visited at the beginning of the 1860s. Most vividly Polish thematics is represented in the novel Nowhere (1864), as well as in the stories and articles of his last years: Russian Democrat in Poland (1880), Interesting Men (1885), etc.The realization of the Polish motif in N. Leskov’s prose is, on the one hand, traditional for Russian literature, depicting international phenomena and topos of different cultures as „other” which are seldom perceived as foreign and hostile. The individuality of N. Leskov is manifested in the fact that his version of depicting Poland and Polish is opposed to the official state imperial position according to which Poland was regarded as a permanent source of danger. This stereotype is destroyed in N. Leskov’s prose.

The article examines the notion of bovarism which can be seen in the work of the most outstanding Russian writers of the second half of the 19th century, for example Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Anton Chekhov. It seems that the source of bovaristic attitude, which is culturally, socially and psychologically motivated, is the extremity of the Russian character prone to self-sacrifice, offering and suffering, as well as cruelty and sadism. A Russian variant of bovarism is boredom and melancholy.

Opis:
The tragedy Borys Godunov should be admitted to be a picture of an essential culture space. The drama represents generally accepted stereotypes and patterns refering to the Polish nation, however it pays attention to diversity of meaning of Pushkin’s attitude towards Poland. The poet contrasted in the work culture and customs of both nations, he chose heroes, whose names and behaviour evoked readers’ doubts and associations with the biography of Pushkin. Characters of the drama are among others: the fictitious son of Andrzej Kurbski - the Kazakh hero, the nobleman Sobański - in all probability related to the emissary Karolina Sobańska, mysterious and susceptible of various interpretations Piotr Łukicz Chruszczow. Present Pushkin’s texts researches confirmed, that impossible is univocal defining the poet’s mutual relations to Poland and the Polish. Pushkin’s views on the Polish matter differed from his personal connections with Mickiewicz’s compatriots, but, probably, he had the invariable and finally specified opinion on the real weight of the Republic of Poland’s culture and its meaning for Russia and Western Europe.
