    The aim of this paper is to explore the gendered discourse about women in early New England and how it contributed to shaping the female experience in the patriarchal Puritan society. The gendered discourse identified and assessed the role and position of seventeenth-century colonial American women, who recognized with silent acceptance their subordination to the male authority. Gendered language was used to articulate theories of hierarchy and obedience and thus to rationalize the New England social structure and order. Contemporary texts, which reiterated stereotypes about sexual and gendered behaviors, used social platform to demonstrate prejudiced views on the status of women.

    Some scholars believe that the cuisine of New England was bland and austere because of the religion. Although ascetism was crucial for the Puritan communities which settled the region, more important was diligent righteous life, thus fasting was never as important for the Puritans as it was for the Catholics. In fact only gluttony was considered to be sinful. This text will confront the thesis assuming that the New England’s cuisine was bland and will examine religion’s impact on New England’s foodways. The text will describe not only the most typical products and dishes, but also customs connected with cuisine. The Puritans did not have to fast all the time (as some would say). The most obvious evidence of that is consent to revelries and customs connected with Thanksgiving Day. The holiday itself was promoted by the local ministers as an alternative to Christmas which was rather not celebrated and in New England. Preachers would encourage people to feast provided they do not feel too much connection to the worldliness. The text will also focus on products strongly connected to the region. Coastal New England is a region rich in fish and various types of seafood. However despite fishing’s role in the history of the region, occupations such as fishermen were usually held in low regard among the first settlers. The holy day of Sabbath was also important for development of local culinary customs. All the characteristic features of the early cuisine of this region were connected to the religious practices and world views of the settlers. They had also their influence on characteristics of contemporary New England’s cuisine. Thus we can say that New England’s example shows how vast the impact of religion can be and that it can affect every field of life.

    The author’s attention in the present article is focused on the attitude of Puritan colonists in seventeenth century New England towards family issues, as well as its origin, structure and functions in a broader religious and social context. Following the example of colonial authors the study discusses in particular the activities that were associated with religious upbringing and education of children and the relations between family members.
    Przedmiotem zainteresowania w artykule jest stosunek siedemnastowiecznych kolonistów purytańskich w Ameryce Północnej do kwestii rodziny, jej pochodzenia, struktury i funkcji pełnionych w szerszym kontekście religijnym i społecznym. Na przykładzie dzieł ówczesnych autorów ukazana została w szczególności jej rola związana z wychowaniem religijnym i edukacją dzieci oraz relacjami między członkami rodziny.

    The article will address the history of the Puritan migration from England to early colonial America, contextualizing their social order and gender in culture in the New World given special emphasis to their theology. The methodology employed is qualitative analysis of factors that: caused Puritan emigration and their early experience in Massachusetts Bay; organized their social structure; and illuminated the position of gender in culture. Generally, Puritans migrated out of New England for varying reasons but primarily out of deep-seated theological frustrations with the Church of England. Their theology is then described and assigned its place as the organizing principle of society; understanding this, gender is consequentially realized as not a particularly useful category of culture for the Puritans although we can observe how cultural works articulated women’s position in society—which was principally as wives, mothers, and worshipers.
    Artykuł dotyczy historii migracji purytanów z Anglii do wczesnej kolonialnej Ameryki, kontekstualizując purytański porządek społeczny i płeć w kulturze Nowego Świata, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem teologii. Zastosowaną metodologią jest jakościowa analiza czynników, które spowodowały emigrację purytanów i ich wczesne doświadczenia w Zatoce Massachusetts, zorganizowały ich strukturę społeczną, a także naświetliły pozycję płci w ich kulturze. W ujęciu ogólnym, purytanie wyemigrowali z Anglii z różnych powodów, przede wszystkim w wyniku głęboko zakorzenionej frustracji teologicznej wobec Kościoła Anglii. Następnie opisana i przypisana do miejsca jako zasada organizująca społeczeństwo jest w tekście teologia purytańska. Na tym tle konsekwentnie objaśniona zostaje płeć jako nieszczególnie użyteczna kategoria kultury dla purytanów, chociaż możemy zaobserwować, w jaki sposób dzieła kultury artykułowały pozycję kobiet w społeczeństwie – głównie jako żon, matek i wyznawczyń kultu.

These in turn are connected to the development of the capitalist economy, ethics of work, democratic processes in politics, Puritanism, reformed orthodoxy and neo-orthodoxy as well as to liberation theology.

    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie niektórych aspektów dyskusji na temat trwałości i znaczenia wartości purytańskich we współczesnym życiu Amerykanów. Kwestia oddziaływania XVII-wiecznej myśli teologiczno-społecznej na system wartości na początku kolonialnej, a potem państwowej rzeczywistości Stanów Zjednoczonych jest jednym z istotniejszych wątków ich historiografii i refleksji społecznej. Stanowiska w tej sprawie rozwijały się i zdobywały uznanie w różny sposób, zwykle skupiając się wokół wiary w istnienie tego oddziaływania, różniąc się poglądem na znaczenie poszczególnych jego elementów i ich żywotność. Autor stoi na stanowisku, że ideały purytańskie wywarły znaczący wpływ na społeczeństwo amerykańskie, stając się jednym z najsilniejszych filarów amerykańskiej tożsamości historycznej i kulturowej. Począwszy od charakterystyki purytanizmu, odwołującej się do ważnych aspektów teologii (teologia przymierza lub federalna), analiza koncentruje się na takich cechach, jak indywidualna wolność i samodzielność, antyautorytaryzm, współodpowiedzialność z elementami demokracji i dowartościowanie edukacji.
    Ziel des Artikels ist es, einige Aspekte der Diskussion über die Dauerhaftigkeit und Bedeutung puritanischer Werte im zeitgenössischen Leben der Amerikaner. Die Frage nach dem Einfluss des theologisch-sozialen Denkens des siebzehnten Jahrhunderts auf das Wertesystem zu Beginn der kolonialen und dann staatlichen Realität der Vereinigten Staaten ist einer der bedeutendsten Fäden ihrer Geschichtsschreibung und sozialen Reflexion. Positionen zu diesem Thema entwickelten und erlangten Anerkennung auf verschiedene Weise, in der Regel zentriert um den Glauben an die Existenz dieses Einflusses, unterschiedlich in ihren Ansichten über die Bedeutung seiner einzelnen Elemente und ihre Vitalität. Der Autor vertritt den Standpunkt, dass puritanische Ideale einen bedeutenden Einfluss auf die amerikanische Gesellschaft hatten und zu einer der stärksten Säulen der amerikanischen historischen und kulturellen Identität wurden. Ausgehend von der Charakteristik des Puritanismus, die sich auf wichtige Aspekte der Theologie (Bündnistheologie oder Bundestheologie) bezieht, konzentriert sich die Analyse auf solche Merkmale wie individuelle Freiheit und Eigenständigkeit, Antiautoritarismus, Mitverantwortung mit Elementen der Demokratie und die Wertschätzung von Bildung.
    The paper aims to present some aspects of the discussion OF the durability and significance of Puritan values in contemporary life of Americans. The issue of the influence of the 17th-century theological and social thought on the system of values, the colonial at the beginning and then the state reality of the United States, has been one of the most vital themes in their historiography and social reflection. Positions on the matter developed and gained recognition in various ways, but they usually centered around the belief in the existence of the influence, differing in their estimation of the importance of its individual elements and their vitality over the time. The author takes the view that Puritan ideals have significantly influenced American society, becoming one of the strongest pillars of the American historical and cultural identity. Starting with a characterisation of some important aspects of the theology of Puritanism (covenant or federal theology), the analysis focuses on its features such as individual freedom and self-reliance, anti-authoritarianism, co-responsibility with elements of democracy, and respect for education.
