The aim of the article is to characterize activities undertaken in order to ensure the position of Poznań among European metropolises and to work out the principles of spatial development of the Poznań Metropolitan Area. The primary aim is to explain whether the authorities of the voivodeship and the city itself fulfilled the conditions necessary to strengthen the development of this area. We assume that the development of the Poznań Metropolitan Area is determined above all by the features of this territory – the existing path of growth of its metropolis, suggested solutions concerning internal organization, ability to create strategic goals and cooperation between territorial units within the area as well as co-operation with the region’s authorities.The Poznań Metropolitan Area has been developing for more than a decade. This area is characterized by intensive daily flows of people, commodities and information. Moreover, cooperation links are gradually formed in the economy, more intensive in the central zone. This area is the location of activities which supplement the metropolitan functions of Poznań as well as potential investments. Unfortunately, functional integration within the metropolitan area is insufficient and re-urbanization has not brought any spectacular effects so far.Activities of the authorities of Wielkopolskie Voivodeship and of the city of Poznań foster the development of the Poznań Metropolitan Area. All the strategies of regional development formulated so far have underlined the significance of the Poznań metropolis for the maintenance of the level of its competitiveness. Strategic aims of the development of the voivodeship, the Poznań Agglomeration and the city of Poznań are not contradictory. They take into account the importance of the development of the Poznań Metropolis in the plan of spatial development of the e. The plan of spatial development of the Poznań Metropolitan Area has already been prepared The main threat to the metropolitan path of development of Poznań and sustainable growth of the Poznań Metropolitan Area, including its central zone in the form of the Poznań Agglomeration, may be difficulties in a sufficiently fast implementation of the formulated strategic goals. Organizational and financial difficulties in implementation of successive projects may be responsible for the fact that the proposed visions of development of the Poznań Metropolis will remain impossible to attain.

The political changes in Poland after 1989 affected the formation of a self-reliant society. One of the results was the decentralisation of public tasks in the field of education, with the relevant competences transmitted to local governments. Since then, communes have been responsible for ensuring equal access to public education, but at the same time a non-public education market has been developing. Important for changes in the Polish educational system was also a reform started in 1999 which led to the transformation of the two-level system of education existing since 1968 into a three-level structure. The first non-public schools began to form as an alternative to public ones. Currently, non-public schools are mainly run by non-governmental organisations, religious institutions or social associations. In the general opinion, the quality of education in non-public schools is higher than in public ones (smaller classes, better contact between student and teacher, an individual approach to each student). In the face of education-model changes it is important to create a wide range of learning opportunities for everyone. It is also not about competition, but cooperation among all institutions involved in education provision. In this article, the progressive diversification of the educational market is presented on the example of the Poznań agglomeration.A diversified educational system, its commercialisation, and the creation of new educational opportunities for children and young people beyond the basic programme of education are undoubtedly benefits for the Polish society. The growing competition among the wide range of educational institutions (also taking into account institutions organising extra-curricular classes), from a theoretical point of view, should help to improve the quality of education in the entire market of educational services. As a consequence, these trends, together with demographic changes, may invite the question about the prospects of public schools in their present form in the future.

Jednym z elementów kształtowania zrównoważonego rozwoju miejskiego systemu transportowego jest integracja publicznego transportu zbiorowego. Często na terenie miast czy aglomeracji miejskich pasażerskie usługi transportowe świadczy kilka przedsiębiorstw transportowych, w których obowiązuje zróżnicowana polityka biletowo-cenowa. Głównym celem integracji publicznego transportu zbiorowego jest ujednolicenie polityki obowiązującej na danym obszarze terytorialnym. Dzięki temu możliwe jest ułatwienie pasażerom korzystania z komunikacji miejskiej. Może przekładać się również na wzrost liczby pasażerów korzystających z publicznego transportu zbiorowego. W artykule przedstawiono oraz omówiono wyniki badań dotyczących procesu integracji oraz funkcjonowania publicznego transportu zbiorowego na terenie wybranych gmin aglomeracji poznańskiej, które zostały przeprowadzone wśród mieszkańców tego terenu.
One of the elements of creating sustainable urban transport system is integration of public transport. Very often in cities or agglomerations public transport is provided by several transport companies with different ticket policy. The most important aim of integration of public transport is to unify the ticket-pricing policy on defined territorial area. This makes it possible to facilitate for passengers the use of public transport. This also into an increased number of passengers using public transport. The article presents and discusses the results of research on the integration process and the functioning of public transport in selected municipalities of the Poznań agglomeration, which was conducted among residents of the area.
