    The paper presents an analysis of roles and visions of foundations in four Central and Eastern European countries: the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary and Poland. It offers a comparative account of the relevant legislation and the paths taken by these four foundation sectors in the aftermath of the 1989–91 democratic re´gime changes. They are depicted against a background characterized, among other things, by a partial demise of the state and rapid development of non-profit organizations. Using the methodology and conceptualizations of the research project Roles and visions of foundations in Europe, the authors describe the role profiles of foundations in these countries. They distinguish between role expectations of foundation stakeholders and the roles foundations are actually able to perform, given existing constraints such as legal regulations and limited own resources. The roles are further analyzed as parts of broader social visions in which foundation representatives and other stakeholders in the four CEE countries prefer to locate them. The dominance of certain roles and visions is explained with reference to specific features of post-communist societies

    The aim of this article is to suggest an explanatory set of factors to the popularity of gated housing in the Polish context. The explanation focuses on the divide between the public and the private sphere and encompasses economic, cultural and institutional explanations to the gating phenomenon. The empirical material consists of interviews, discourse analysis, a questionnaire, official reports and data, and legal regulation analysis. The Polish example display that both the remnants from the past and the contemporary ideals can be derived from the public-private divide. This divide has played a central role in the negotiations on urban space, the role of housing, and the identities and activities connected to housing and spatial issues since 1989. It is argued that the introduction of market economy followed by socioeconomic inequalities, has resulted in specific forms of creative strategies for individual actions among Poles and to the popularity of gated housing.

    Wybory parlamentarne z 19 stycznia 1947 r. były dla komunistów zamknięciem etapu przejmowania władzy. By zapewnić sobie przewagę w kampanii przedwyborczej, wykorzystano wszelkie możliwe narzędzia, łącznie z aresztowaniami. Z jednej strony prowadzono działania mające na celu eliminację przeciwników politycznych, z drugiej zaś starano się osłabić opór społeczny. Dla komunistów społeczeństwo stało się przedmiotem w walce wyborczej, który należało odpowiednio ukształtować, by osiągnąć zamierzone cele. Równocześnie swoją kampanię prowadziły opozycyjne Polskie Stronnictwo Ludowe i organizacje podziemne. Brutalna walka polityczna powodowała zagubienie większości wyborców w obliczu wykluczających się wzajemnie obietnic wyborczych oraz oficjalnej propagandy nieznajdującej odzwierciedlenia w rzeczywistości. Swoistą reakcją na niezrozumienie istniejącej sytuacji, ale i na obawy o przyszłość stały się plotki i pogłoski obiegające Polskę w przededniu wyborów. Prześledzenie pogłosek i plotek pokazuje stopień dezorientacji społeczeństwa w zachodzących zmianach wewnętrznych, jego stosunek do władz komunistycznych, ale i do opozycji. Pozwala na odtworzenie obaw i stopnia niepewności co do przyszłości kraju, jak i problemów dnia codziennego w okresie przedwyborczym.
    The parliamentary elections of January 19th, 1947, for the communists were the closing of the seizure of power. To ensure an advantage in pre-election use, all available tools available, including arrests, were used. On the one hand, they are guided by activities involving the goal of eliminating social opponents, while on the other they neutralize social resistance. For communist public opinion, it was included in an electoral struggle that had to be shaped properly by its intended purposes. Simultaneously, the opposition Polish People's Party and underground institutions conducted their campaign. The brutal political struggle empowered the majority of voters, in the calculation of mutually exclusive electoral promises, in the calculation of the official propaganda of the unsupported relationship in reality. A kind of reaction to a misunderstanding of the existing situation, but also concerns about the future, turned into rumors and hearsay that began to circulate Poland on the eve of elections. Tracing the rumors shows the degree of social confusion about the internal changes taking place, attitudes to the communist authorities, but also to the opposition and the solution of problems related to the future of the country, as well as everyday problems in the pre-election period.

    The author discusses Chris Hann’s book Repatriating Polanyi, as a good opportunity for remembering Karl Polanyi’s character and output. In their time, Polanyi’s ideas about human economies were widely discussed in the social sciences, including in economic anthropology, and had a considerable impact on them. The text deals with those themes of Polanyi’s work that Hann addresses, that is, the question of forms of economic integration and his concept of double movement.
