The paper offers a review of Polish discussions on the educational aspects of film. While initially many authors were quite sceptical of film, then viewed primarily as a form of cheap entertainment for the masses, they subsequently started exploring the possibilities for using film in education. The paper discusses the views of early pioneers, such as Matuszewski and Irzykowski, up until more recent developments (such as the New Horizons Association), emphasizing the Polish contribution to the history of film and media education.

Opis:
For over twenty years in Silesia the propaganda and organizational campaigns under the banner of autonomy have been intensified. Admittedly, the influences of such organizations as the Silesian Autonomy Movement (Ruch Autonomii Śląska) or Association of People of the Silesian Nationality (Związek Ludności Narodowości Śląskiej) are small, but the idea of the autonomy of Silesia wins more and more followers. The increasing number of participants of various campaigns, public gatherings, marches organized by these associations have all proved it. The leader of the Silesian Autonomy Movement (Ruch Autonomii Śląska) puts a strategy into action entitled “Autonomy 2020” which, among other things, strives to create League of Regions in Poland organizing in Poznan in 2012 a conference for the followers of autonomy, and a demonstration - the March of Regions - in Warsaw in 2015. Then, their referendum campaigns will start. They are supposed to focus on both constitutional amendments and coming into effect of the Organic Silesian Province Status in 2020 which will define the principles of autonomy.

Opis:
The article deals with the complex process of creating a country image, both at home and abroad. It consists of two parts, being interrelated with each other, however not in a direct way. In part one the focus is laid on the image of India created by Indians themselves, which is partly a result of the grand economic transformation initiated in the beginning of the 1990s, and partly a heritage of much older cultural and political tradition. In part two the case of India’s changing image in Poland is analyzed, viz. the case of a country, which unlike other European states, never ventured to establish its own political presence overseas, but nevertheless it was able to build a complex structure of various images of the civilization it hardly had any direct political contact with.

The author analyzes the policy of Poland towards autonomous Slovakia in the period of six months from the Munich Conference to forming in Spring 1939 formally independent, separate Slovak state. The government in Warsaw made a serious mistake by demanding in Autumn 1938 to join some small pieces of Slovakias territory to Poland. The realization of those demands led to rapid weakening of strong at that time Polish influences in Slovakia and accelerated the process of strengthening German influences. As a result, not only had Slovakia allowed the Germans in September 1939 to use its territory to attack Poland, but also itself took part in fights alongside the Wehrmacht.

The article deals with an issue of the possible applications of oral history to teaching history at Polish schools. The author states that oral history as an element of educating young people should become a natural part of teaching processes. It can become a factor increasing their awareness of their local history and of the links connecting them with the previous generations. It is also an efficient way of avoiding teaching based only on archival facts and events. This statement is illustrated by chosen examples of the use of oral history at schools and discusses the possibilities of its further use.

About the tradition of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth, “Kresy Wschodnie” and the role of Poland and Poles in the history of Belarusians and LithuaniansSeveral prominent historians and researchers of historical memory from Poland, Lithuania and Belarus have focused on some questions concerning traditions of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, as well as the role of the close neighbors in the history of Poles, Lithuanians, and Belarusians. This insight give us an idea about the main directions of historical research in these countries for which the history of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish‑Lithuanian Commonwealth is a common heritage. This also allows us to understand the level of public and political interest in this problem, and reveal important trends in the historical memory of these three countries.

The poem Pensando Patria (Think Fatherland), by Stanisław Andrzej Gruda, one of the many pseudonyms of young Woityła, fits very well in the subject matter of the Congress, inspired by Niccolò Tommaseo. Gruda shows a deep understanding of the idea of Fatherland, based on the strong relationship between the roots, the history and the language, as well as the freedom, of the Polish nation. The call to “Uscire da se stesso e parlare al maggior numero possibile di uomini” (“to flee from oneself and talk to as many men as possible”), an important aspect of the poet’s mission according to Tommaseo, was achieved by Woityla both as poet, when he sang the liberation of Poland from foreigner’s yoke, and as Priest (and subsequently Pope) when he foregrounded the value of freedom as a crucial part of human conscience.

Opis:
For a few decades, Polish foreign policy was determined by the geographic location and a difficult to classify complex, at one time German, at another Soviet and, at times, by the both of them simultaneously. It was particularly apparent during the interwar period and it unquestionably affected Poland’s relations with its neighbours. Throughout the interwar period, they had an “increased temperature,” with the exception of Romania, whose border was considered as peaceful. Another problem of similar importance was the domestic situation of the country which maintained clumsy policy towards many national minorities. The author has drawn attention to some aspects of Polish-Ukrainian relations and has attempted to seek answers to one crucial question: why did Polish-Ukrainian border become an area of ethnic conflict that turned out to be so dramatic for both sides. The author believes that the present situation in Ukraine and Poland’s involvement in resolving it are not the reason why the his-torical truth about the massacres of Poles from Eastern Borderlands should suffer. There are reasons to believe that both sides contributed to the surge of nationalism, but the measures which were adopted were inadequate and had all the signs of organised genocide and ethnic cleansing. Ukraine has a sovereign right to honour its heroes. Similarly, Poland has a sovereign right to judge this tragic chapter in the history of both nations and to promote its own perspective.

Podlacha studied history, art history, logic and the methodology of sciences at the University of Lvov. After college, whilst working as a high school teacher, he undertook, in the region of Bukowina, pioneering fieldwork on the Late Byzantine wall paintings found in a then almost completely unknown group of Orthodox churches. He published his first few articles on the paintings as well as a monograph, which became his doctoral dissertation. After further studies with A. Goldschmidt and W. Weisbach in Berlin, he qualified as a university lecturer at the University of Lvov. From then on he was permanently linked with this institution as professor and leader of the lively humanistic centre which formed around the two departments of art history. He also lectured during the Second World War: under Soviet occupation at the Ukrainian University in Lvov, and under German occupation – at the secret Polish university in the same city. Following the incorporation of Lvov into the Soviet Union, he was deported and moved to Gliwice, where he organized from scratch the department of art history at the newly established Polish university in Wrocław. He specialized in medieval painting, and his publications in this area related to the major illuminated codices in Poland, as well as to book illumination in Silesia. The main areas of Podlacha’s research were the theoretical foundations and methods of art history, which for decades formed the bulk of his lectures and seminars, as well as being the chief theme of his long-awaited book, which was to be his opus vitae; accepted for publication (in 1949), it was rejected by the communist authorities for political and ideological reasons.

Opis:
This article introduces Zdzislaw Kepiński and his work, as seen from a methodological perspective. He was an art historian associated with the University of Poznan (now A. Mickiewicz University) and the National Museum of Poznan. Kepinski specialized in medievalism and the art history of the 19th and 20th centuries. He was also a literary historian and painter, who taught painting at the local academy of fine arts. Although unwilling to make theoretical and methodological statements, he is presented here as the most outstanding iconologist in Polish art history (confirmed by his study on the Romanesque bronze doors in Gniezno). This does not mean that he was the best at understanding and implementing the principles of this method, only that he greatly enriched it. His attitude can best be described as a combination of a specific kind of dilettantism and a relative independence from institutional constraints (though he was a Marxist), with the freedom of movement between disciplines and research methods formulated in response to the challenges posed by works of art. Dealing with such artists as Veit Stoss, Jan van Eyck, Stanislaw Wyspiański or the Impressionists, the scholar tried on the one hand to reconstruct their imaginative world, and on the other the epoch in which they worked. Kępiński also wrote about contemporary artists, with whom he maintained long-lasting friendships, worked with or mentored. Kepinski contributed many texts in this field, brief but important, especially the catalogues of exhibitions. As a result, he significantly contributed to the establishment of the canon of Polish art of the third quarter of the 20th century.

The article focuses on autobiographical films by Polish-American documentary filmmaker whose most personal project is Never Forget to Lie (2012) about Jews rescued from the Warsaw ghetto in their early childhood. Marzyński is a Holocaust survivor himself and a television reporter who emigrated from communist Poland in 1969. He has been gradually transforming the style of the documentary films he made in the West to make them more and more personal by referring to his biography. Marzyński’s cinéma vérité techniques include initiating emotional in-front-of-the-camera interviews with Holocaust survivors and witnesses of History in the meaningful surrounding of historical places. In this way, the filmmaker makes the architecture, landscape and personal objects “speak” about the past or uses them to stimulate the memory of the interviewed people. The only quoted film material, or found footage, comes from his own archives, where he has been collecting his released documentaries together with never used scenes and takes.
