Opis:
Analysis of stakeholders’ implementation of the National Strategy for sustainable utilisation and conservation of animal genetic resources in Poland. The study, based on the customised questionnaire, was aimed at evaluating the contribution of relevant stakeholder groups in the implementation of Strategic Priorities and specific tasks identified in the Action Plan to the National Strategy. The analysis shows that breeders associations and other organizations entrusted with herd book keeping, as well as agricultural universities, are significantly contributing to the implementation of the National Strategy. In addition, significant involvement in implementation was reported by regional authorities (Marshal’s Offices in voivodships) and extension services. Public administration and governmental agencies proved to be heavily engaged in implementation and enforcement of specific areas of the Action Plan.
Analiza wdrażania Krajowej Strategii zrównoważonego użytkowania i ochrony zasobów genetycznych zwierząt w Polsce. Administracja publiczna i agencje rządowe były zaangażowane w wysokim stopniu we wdrażanie i nadzorowanie działań, w zakresie swoich kompetencji.

Opis:
Chamaedaphne calyculata is rare and endangerded species of Polish flora. The genetic variation within and among ten polish population of leatherleaf was analysed by ISSR and ISJ markers. The analysis revealed a total of 160loci with an average of 13.3 bands per primer. We expected a low level of genetic diversity of this narrowly distributed species in Poland, but our results indicate that Ch. calyculata revealed a high level of genetic diversity at species level (P=88.7%of polymorphic loci, AE=1.468, HE=0.290). At the population level, the variation of Ch. calyculata was significantly lower (P=27.6%, AE=1.140, HE=0.098). There was significant correlation between ecological properties (population size; number of flowering ramets) and genetic diversity parameters. Analysis of molecular variance showed that most of variation (62%) in Ch. calyculata occurred among population. Gene flow (Nm) between the ten studied populations, determined based on the GST index, was very low at 0.239. It indicated that the fragmentation and isolation of populations might result from specific evolutionary history of this plant and postglacial recolonization

Opis:
The paper presents the proposal of a strategy of conservation of genetic resources of wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis) in Polish forests. Some results of the recent studies on distribution, resources and genetic variability of wild service tree in Poland that make a scientific base of the programme are presented. Both in situ and ex situ methods should be applied in conservation of genetic resources of S. torminalis. Conservation affords should first to be focused on forest management oriented in favor of wild service tree (e.g. logging intervention, competition control, preparing of favorable sites for new establishments). Further, in situ measures should include selection of conservation areas (natural gene reserves) and preserving trees of the best quality (protected genotypes). These objects would provide seeds for new establishments and to feed populations of small size. The genotypes of the selected earlier preserving trees (about 250–300) would be protected in ex situ conservation objects – seedling and clonal seed orchards. These plantations would also provide seeds needed for future establishments. The genotypes of endangered populations or single trees of S. torminalis could be preserved in the Forest Gene Bank in Kostrzyca.

Opis:
The subject of the study was a population of Sorbus torminalis resulting from spontaneous regeneration from seeds in northern Poland at the north-eastern limit of the species distribution. The population, occupying a fenced plot of 1.72 ha in the Forest District of Jamy, amounted to 579 individuals of variable age classes up to about 19 years old. Six polymorphic gene loci: MDH-B, ME-A, 6PGD-B, ADH-B, PGM-A, PGM-B were studied in 532 individuals recruited post-fencing and 21 potentially parental, adult trees. The analysis showed similarly high levels of genetic diversity within both subsets of individuals but there was also a noticeable change in genetic structure between them. Detailed genetic analysis of the post-fencing recruits revealed lack of significant differences between different age groups based on DBH within the fenced plot.

Opis:
An extremely endangered population of Viola uliginosa Besser at the classical locality of this taxon has been studied. The AFLP analysis was based on 18 specimens of V. uliginosa (about 10% of preserved individuals); additionally, two individuals of V. riviniana were included in the data set as the out group. A high genetical uniformity of the whole population (similarity indexes close to 1) was detected. It was not correlated significantly with the spatial distribution of the plants. The study serves as a basis for practical conservation measures and at the same time as a starting point for a more extensive research on the genetical variability of the species throughout its range.

Opis:
Wych elm (Ulmus glabra Huds.) is a rare scattered forest tree species in Poland. First studies on genetic diversity of the species in its natural range in Poland give a good basis for the management and conservation of its genetic resources. In the present study, we determined the level of genetic variation and genetic differentiation of seventeen natural Wych elm populations in Poland using nine nuclear microsatellite loci. The number of analyzed individuals was 601. The level of genetic diversity of Polish populations of Wych elm corresponded with the results of the previous studies on this species in Europe. The populations show quite low level of genetic diversity of the species on the population level and quite high diversity on the interpopulation level. A total of 119 alleles was found, with average number per locus (A) equal 6.0 and allelic richness at medium high level (AR10=4.7). Observed (Ho) and expected (He) heterozygosity reached 0.583 and 0.602 respectively. The genetic differentiation between Polish populations of Wych elm occurred at a low level (Fst=0.089). Inbreeding depression may occur in the next generations (Fis=0.031). Genetic diversity between Wych elm populations in Poland may be the result of unfavorable random processes related to the reduction of population size resulting from elm disease. To better understand the processes related to the genetic diversity of Wych elm populations, research on field elm variation should be undertaken. Such studies may give an answer to the potential influence of introgression between these species on the genetic structure of the Wych elm. Both in situ as well as ex situ conservation measures are highly recommended to preserve genetic resources of this valuable noble hardwood species in Polish landscape.

Opis:
A good knowledge of species delimitation is crucial for the biodiversity protection and the conservation of wild species. We studied the efficiency of AFLP markers and morphological characters to assist species determination for Melica ciliata L. and M. transsilvanica Schur within European range of distribution, including isolated and range-limit populations of "M. ciliata" (i.e. M. cf. ciliata) from the Polish Sudetes, where it is regarded as critically endangered. AFLP markers were found to be more effective then morphological characters (more or less continuous) in distinguishing the both studied species. AMOVA revealed very low genetic diversity within populations and high differentiation among populations of M. ciliata and M. transsilvanica (FST = 0.89 and 0.95, respectively). The species-diagnostic AFLP markers of M. transsilvanica shared with "M. ciliata" from the Sudetes were detected. On the other hand, no species-diagnostic genetic markers of M. ciliata or hybrid-diagnostic markers of M. × thuringiaca were found within "M. ciliata". PCoA and NJ showed an overlapping genetic diversity of "M. ciliata" and M. transsilvanica. Hierarchical AMOVA supported the absence of a significant genotypic distinction between "M. ciliata" and M. transsilvanica. ANOVA showed that the length ratio of lower to upper glumes was the best morphological character to discriminate between M. ciliata and M. transsilvanica. Combined morphological and genetic data show that M. ciliata is not currently present in Poland as its putative Polish populations represent M. transsilvanica. A significant decrease in genetic variability that could influence viability was not observed the in Sudetian populations of M. transsilvanica. However, the population size changes significantly as a result of plant succession. Correction of the northern limit of the continuous distribution of M. ciliata L. in Central Europe is presented.
