    Over the recent years activities in the field of territorial marketing have been gaining in importance in Poland. Specially programmed marketing activities enable communes, districts or regions to obtain such necessary development factors as financial capital, human capital, tangible items and technology. Local authorities play a crucial role in this field as they are the main entities that prepare, organize, implement, coordinate and control all marketing activities in a certain place. In practice, such activities depend on many factors. The paper discusses promotion tools used by the communes of Mazovian Province and identifies barriers of marketing activities. Regardless of the level of socio-economic development of the communes, majority of the respondents indicated financial issues as barriers to marketing activities.
    Działania z zakresu marketingu terytorialnego w Polsce zyskują w ostatnich latach na znaczeniu. Pozyskanie przez gminy, powiaty czy województwa niezbędnych czynników rozwojowych jest możliwe dzięki odpowiednim działaniom marketingowym. Głównym podmiotem odpowiedzialnym za przygotowanie i realizację całości przedsięwzięć marketingowych dotyczących danego miejsca są władze lokalne. W praktyce jednostki samorządu terytorialnego prowadzą różne działania, co zależy od wielu uwarunkowań. Scharakteryzowano stosowane w gminach województwa mazowieckiego środki promocji oraz wskazano bariery prowadzenia działań marketingowych. Najczęściej wskazywane bariery to: bariery finansowe, rozproszenie działań w ramach różnych jednostek organizacyjnych, przypadkowość działań oraz niedocenianie znaczenia działań marketingowych w zarządzaniu gminą.

    One of the most important concepts in rural geography is the multifunctional development. In this concept, the postulated increase in the number of business entities is to lead to an improvement in the socio-economic situation. One of the ways to achieve multifunctionality may be creating local economic activity zones (LEAZ). They are created to stimulate entrepreneurship in local scale. The main purpose of the work is to determine the impact of local economic activity zones on selected factors describing socio-economic development of rural areas. The following research questions were posed: (1) In the communes after creating LEAZs, were the indicators of socio-economic development higher than the average in rural areas of voivodeship? (2) In the communes where LEAZs exist, were the indicators of socio-economic development higher within five years after the creation of LEAZs than before? (3) In the urban-rural communes where LEAZs work, were the effects more significant in the rural areas or in the city? In the research procedure, the index of average annual dynamics (the rate of change) and the Mann Whitney U test test were used primarily. The analysis shows that the average values of the dynamics in change indicators in the areas where LEAZ operates are higher or comparable with the average value for the rural areas. The study diagnosed the beneficial effect of the presence of large business entities in the LEAZ on employment growth in rural areas.

    The subject of the article is the availability of technical infrastructure equipment in rural areas. Analysed were both the availability of technical infrastructure facilities and the tendencies of development in this area. Spatial analysis covered rural areas in Poland per provinces in the years 2003-2010. The studies comprised the following elements of infrastructure: water-pipe network, sewerage network, gas grid and road network, as well as individual and collective sewage treatment plants. For the sake of the article, which aims at the assessment of the level of technical infrastructure development in rural areas of Poland in spatial and time arrangement, the author applied methods of statistical multidimensional analysis using a construction of synthetic measure. The results of analysis obtained in the work greatly confirm commonly known situation of rural areas in Poland. However, it is worth noticing, that despite the intense investment activities undertaken by local self-governments and noticeable improvement in the technical infrastructure facilities availability, interregional differences are diminishing only slightly. On the basis of the joint assessment, in 2010 the highest level of the technical infrastructure facilities availability in rural areas was noted in the Małopolskie and the lowest in the Lubuskie province.

    The purpose of this paper is to present, by means of case studies, examples of activities in the field of multipurpose development businesses which, due to services offered, their location and recognition, can serve as good practices and provide inspiration for the development of such activities in rural areas of selected EU countries. A key aspect of multipurpose rural development is to shift from single-function development towards farm diversification in order to engage in and develop non-agricultural activities. The concept of multipurpose rural development, where agriculture is no longer the sole function of rural areas, has often become a panacea for maintaining the basic form of agriculture, especially in areas affected by severe fragmentation of agricultural land. The examples found in three countries (Poland, Spain and Romania) showed that agriculture can be combined with non-agricultural activities with environmentally-friendly, innovative and educational concepts. The analyzed cases also showed that entrepreneurship in rural areas is often carried out in accordance with the principles of sustainable development, and the multifunctional nature of these activities indicates that even small farms are able to survive. However, it is important that it is not only agricultural activity, but other activities connected with it, using natural and cultural resources of farms and villages, such as processing or education.
    Celem opracowania jest przedstawienie przykładów działalności w zakresie wielofunkcyjnego rozwoju gospodarstw rolnych, które ze względu na oferowaną usługę i miejsce położenia oraz rozpoznawalność, mogą posłużyć jako przykłady dobrych praktyk, a także być inspiracją dla rozwoju tego typu działalności na obszarach wiejskich w krajach UE. Istotnym sposobem rozwoju wielofunkcyjnego wsi jest odejście od monofunkcyjnego rozwoju obszarów wiejskich i przejście do dywersyfikacji gospodarstw rolnych w kierunku podejmowania i rozwijania działalności pozarolniczej. W ramach koncepcji wielofunkcyjnego rozwoju obszarów wiejskich, warunkiem jest odejście od rolnictwa jako jedynej funkcji terenów wiejskich. Oznacza to tworzenie nowych miejsc pracy, w zakresie szeroko rozumianej przedsiębiorczości pozarolniczej, zwłaszcza na obszarach charakteryzujących się dużym rozdrobnieniem agrarnym. Wybrane przykłady z trzech krajów: Polski, Hiszpanii oraz Rumunii, pokazały że można połączyć rolnictwo z działalnościami pozarolniczymi, a także koncepcjami ekologicznymi i innowacyjnymi i edukacyjnymi. Analizowane przypadki pokazały także, że przedsiębiorczość na obszarach wiejskich często jest realizowana zgodnie z zasadami zrównoważonego rozwoju, a wielofunkcyjny charakter tych działalności wskazuje, że nawet niewielkie gospodarstwa rolne są w stanie się utrzymać. Jednak istotny jest fakt, że nie jest to tylko działalność rolnicza, ale połączone z nią inne działalności, wykorzystujące zasoby naturalne i kulturowe gospodarstwa oraz wsi, takie jak przetwórstwo i edukacja.

    Dynamics of changes in the Polish agriculture was undoubtedly affected the most by Poland's accession to the European Union. During the first years of the membership the EU agricultural policy based mainly on supporting economic development of agricultural farms in the new member states. After the introduction of Rural Development Policy (RDP) for the years 2007-2013, greater emphasis was put on the natural environment protection, rural development but also on the measures for farm support. The amount of money allocated to this objective in-creased but simultaneously the regulations concerning the requirements a farmer must fulfil to get the payment were tightened.Yearly changeability of cropping structure and acreage causes numerous troubles for farmers who apply for direct payments but also to farms implementing modernization projects because they have to makes yearly reporting concerning cropping structure for ARMA. At present, in order to obtain regional, national or EU subventions agricultural holding should submit annual reports of its agricultural activity. The paper suggests the use of GIS techniques to conduct spatial registration of agricultural parcels included in the crop rotation of the farm production. The created database will facilitate an analysis of agricultural farm production providing the information necessary for reporting required for direct payments. The farm where the investigations were conducted is situated in the Łódzkie voivodeship. Apart from agrifood industry, agriculture is the main specialization of this region.

    Due to the considerable fragmentation of farms in order to improve competitiveness of the Polish agricultural sector it is crucial to enhance cooperation of farmers within producer groups. The paper analyses changes in farm integration processes in view of the implementation of the agricultural policy. It presents growth dynamics for the number of agricultural producer groups and their spatial distribution in Poland. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the introduced financial support mechanisms on association of farmers in producer groups.
    Z powodu dużego rozdrobnienia gospodarstw rolnych dla poprawy konkurencyjności polskiego sektora rolnego bardzo istotna jest umiejętność kooperacji oraz współpracy rolników w ramach grup producenckich. W artykule przeprowadzono ocenę procesów integracyjnych gospodarstw rolnych, które zachodziły w warunkach wdrażania działań polityki rolnej. Przedstawiono dynamikę wzrostu liczby grup producentów rolnych oraz ich przestrzenne rozmieszczenie w Polsce. Celem badań było określenie wpływu wprowadzenia mechanizmów wsparcia fi nansowego na zrzeszanie się rolników w grupy producenckie.

    In the result of the EU enlargement not only a united legislative and economical body was formed on European basis, but also the support payments in many branches of economy in the new member states have increased substantially, including those in agriculture and rural development. A brief characteristics of place of agriculture in the economy of the Baltic states and Poland is given in the article, as well as that of the changes in total amount of support achieved before the entry into the EU. The effect of this support upon different agricultural holdings performance parameters (net value added, production net value added, net investments) in the period of years 2002-2006 is studied. A comparative analysis gave basis for the conclusions on the specificity of support use in the economic activity of holdings in different states.
