Opis:
The aim of the study is to examine the opinion of a group of women on their economic activity and decisions related to retirement. The first part of the article reviews previous research related to the economic activity of older people with a special focus on women. In the empirical part of the article, women’s opinions on issues related to retirement were analyzed. The research was carried out in 2016 on a sample of 45 women, which is a non-representative sample selection technique. The method used is similar to the method of “random choice” or “convenience choice” (convenience sampling). Research results indicate that retirement was often not fully voluntary, and resulted from the liquidation of the workplace or from the bad atmosphere. The time of retirement for women is primarily a period when they can fulfill their plans and dreams.

This article is a contribution to the debate on the role and character of women’s organizations in Eastern Europe after 1945, including the role they played in the process of women’s emancipation. The purpose of the article is to offer insight into the relation between the communist party (that is the PPR and its successor – the PZPR) and the women’s movement in Poland in the years 1945–89 and to provide a new interpretation of the movement’s history under state socialism. I contend that women’s organizations should be viewed as part of the communist system and the roles they played should be understood in the context of the policies pursued by the communist states.

Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present a cross-section of the 1980s in Poland from the perspective of female protagonists and to describe the role they played in the process of democratic changes, their involvement in the active opposition, strikes and later the Solidarity underground. The aim is to describe how they coped with everyday struggles, what roles they took on in life and highlight their contribution to the gradual liberation from the communist regime. Women took an active part in the struggle for Poland’s independence. Women described in this article manifested their opinions on politics, labor and civil rights. In presenting the activities of women’s resistance, the authors took into account gender and cultural perspectives. The article was written based on historical publications, interviews with witnesses of the aforementioned events and opposition activists themselves, as well as articles on the subject.
Manifestowały swoje zdanie w zakresie polityki, praw pracowniczych i obywatelskich. Autorki przedstawiając działania oporu kobiet uwzględniły perspektywę płciową i kulturową. Artykuł został napisany w oparciu o publikacje historyczne, opracowania poświęcone temu tematowi oraz wywiady ze świadkami wymienionych wydarzeń i samymi działaczami opozycji.

Funeral costumes are elements of funerary furnishings with very different characteristics. Their form was influenced not only by local funeral customs but also by the property status of the families of deceased people and the fashion trends prevailing in a given region. The study of funerary clothing clearly translates into the general development of knowledge about the evolution of fashion, and thus the issue is no longer only the domain of costumists, but also archeology. This is clearly visible on the example of the results of archaeological research conducted in the crypts of the Church of St. Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary - over 100 burials turned out to be hiding the largest archaeological collection of modern funerary clothing from the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Against the background of these costumes, the clothes in which the woman was placed in burial no. 8 (EA crypt) stands out. Her attire took an exceptionally impressive form, as evidenced by the fact that this tomb aroused the interest of the local population long before the archaeologists arrived in Szczuczyn. According to the stories of the locals, she was buried in a wedding dress. As a result of the verification carried out both on the stand and as a result of laboratory analyzes, it was diagnosed whether this theory can be confirmed with the use of scientific methods. The analyzes, apart from referring to the theory of stories told by local history enthusiasts, turned out to contribute a lot to the current state of knowledge on the development of 18th-century women's fashion.

Opis:
Migration from the new European Union (EU) Member States to the United Kingdom (UK) has been identified as one of the most significant social phenomena of recent times and Accession 8 (A8) migration to the UK has been studied extensively particularly since 2004. Even though gendered studies of migration are now attaining recognition, there is limited literature in relation to Polish migrant women. What is more, there is now much evidence to support the view that migrant women constitute a large proportion of international migrants. In fact, when considering migration within the European context, migrant women now outnumber their male counterparts. Drawing on a review of secondary literature and preliminary findings from new fieldwork research undertaken in Poland and the UK in 2012, this paper explores how Polish migrant women exercise their rights as EU citizens to better their own and their families’ wellbeing. As the consequence of their newly acquired rights as EU citizens, Polish migrant women appear to be active agents who make use of the resources and opportunities that migration offers. It is concluded that migration within the EU presents positive opportunities for Polish migrant women to actively engage with and exercise national and EU citizenship rights.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to identify the changes, based on the biographies of selected women-musicians, which affected traditional musical culture from the strict adherence to roles and functions for both genders to the total collapse of these barriers. There are no observations concerning women-musicians in the XIX century or in the centuries before, neither in Polish ethnography nor in the ethomusicological literature. Women probably played musical instruments, but only at home or while tending domestic animals, however there is a lack of any source confirmation of public performances of women musicians. On account of the rare literature on the topic of gender studies in the field of Polish traditional music and the lack of the gender-thread in the remaining ethnomusicological literature, information on the topic of the current position of women-musicians was gathered first of all during interviews with them and with their families. The analysis is related to the way they speak about their own activities, performances, experiences. The author refers to opinions of only some selected interviewees, the most characteristic of particular generations. The first generation is represented by women born near the end of the XIX century, the second by women born before World War II, the third by women born directly after World War II. Women born after the 50’s and 60’s of the XX century are part of the fourth generation, because at that time the differences in the gender situation had become less apparent.

Opis:
The global pandemic-induced crisis has caused the differences that exist between the sexes in many areas of life to become more extreme. Apart from its influence on mental health, the necessity to adjust to the obligation of social distancing has also influenced the possibilities of students’ development as regards relationships. It has also limited their ability to earn money, which directly affects one’s economic status and other related areas such as the availability of healthcare, etc. This study, which aims to present the psychosocial state of women who have been studying in Poland during the pandemic, shows that it is women, more than men, who have experienced the changes caused by the pandemic, both in the context of how they function and their fears. Life satisfaction amongst female students depends largely on their economic and material independence, and any hardships experienced influence, more often than in the case of men, the emotions that are dominant in women. The results of the study clearly show that in the long run establishing a network of psychological support for women will be necessary as a response to their psychosocial health, which has worsened during the pandemic. Additionally, educated people who, in these difficult times, have not had the possibility to earn money or have had to accept jobs below their competencies (which may also significantly affect their life satisfaction), will be in need of support.

The analysis of women’s participation in elections has long been an important theme within political studies. Scholars have looked at factors that affect women’s participation in politics in general, as well as their decisions to run in parliamentary or regional elections. In 2011, as the second Central and Eastern Europe country (the first being Slovenia), Poland introduced gender quotas into the proportional electoral system. Researchers looking into the consequences of such systemic solutions in various countries have established that the intended goal of increasing the proportion of women in legislative bodies has not always been achieved. In fact, the outcomes have varied widely. Such discrepancies invite further examination. The presented study focuses on regional assembly elections in Poland between 2010 and 2018. The article elaborates on and complements the results of the authors’ prior work on the 2010 and 2014 elections. The research looks at how effective women were in winning the available mandates, what were their placements and which parties managed to get most women into the assemblies.

Opis:
The situation of women in the labor market in Poland depends on numerous complex micro- and macroeconomic factors. It results from the economic condition of the country and the global economic situation. It is a product of decisions made on a micro level as a result of macro circumstances. When discussing the employment market it should be borne in mind that it is not an ordinary market, such as the market for wellington boots or that of strawber- ries. The ‘product’ here is a human being and an ‘excess’ in the labor market creates a certain unfavorable outcome, namely unemployment. Just as an excess in the supply of wellingtons or strawberries leads to a drop in price, in the labor market it means cuts in salaries or stopping paychecks. That is why one of the tasks of the government is to provide people with the basic opportunity to get a job and earn money. Why then should the state react to the turbulence in the labor market when it does not necessarily have to do so in other markets? The answer is simply that wellingtons and strawberries do not have to provide for themselves and the family.

High percentage of women entrepreneurs in Poland, together with a positive stereotype of woman entrepreneur may be a sign of a new picture of woman – professionally active and successful – becoming more and more popular and socially acceptable. In the text, the analysis of cultural preconditions for the development of women entrepreneurship is carried out. Based on the results of public opinion surveys and the analysis of the mass media content, the author attempts to construct a social image of woman entrepreneur.

Opis:
In a discussion about a place of women in contemporary political life, the role of various actions and mechanisms aiming at increasing female involvement is extremely significant, since today women represent slightly more than half of the world population, and their participation in formal political structures remains insignificant. Without any doubt, since 1989, one may observe increasing women’s role in Polish political life. One of the proofs for it is a higher number of women registered as candidates before parliamentary elections, as well as higher percentage of women in Polish Sejm. In spite of this, Polish women are still less active in the political life than men, which results from the existence of several barriers hindering their participation and involvement in politics. The main aim of this article is to analyse the opinion of Poles on the activities of women in political life and introduction of additional mechanisms having the potential to increase women’s participation in political bodies. The research was based on empirical data collected in November and December 2013 within the project “Political preferences: Attitude – Identification – Behavior”.

The article discusses the main activities of the units of the Union of Ukrainian Women in the internment camps for the UPR Army soldiers in Poland in the years 1921-1922. Most importantly, the members of the union nursed sick and disabled Ukrainian soldiers, as well as women and children. Thanks to their efforts, the living conditions of the most vulnerable camp residents (in particular, children, including infants and toddlers) were improved. For example, the Union of Ukrainian Women ensured a minimum nutrition supply for that group along with daycare in special institutions established by the union. All of this was possible thanks to the support of charity organizations, which spared no expense, always coming to the aid of women and children who permanently resided in the camps.

As diversity, equity and inclusion policies gain momentum in the Global North, the strikingly low visibility of women in Polish public space is being addressed not only via bottom-to-top activism but also through initiatives by local governments. This, in turn, results in controversies over the very need for gender equality in urban naming, as well as over the commemoration-worthiness of particular personages. The present paper aims to assess the changes that have taken place in Poland since the beginning of 2018, when an analysis of the 12 biggest cities revealed a persistent under-representation of women as namesakes in street naming. We offer a quantitative analysis and then focus on four selected case studies, each exemplifying one type of situation: open conflict, covert tactics, and two combinations of surface vs core values relationship.
