Opis:
The author analyzes the policy of Poland towards autonomous Slovakia in the period of six months from the Munich Conference to forming in Spring 1939 formally independent, separate Slovak state. The government in Warsaw made a serious mistake by demanding in Autumn 1938 to join some small pieces of Slovakias territory to Poland. The realization of those demands led to rapid weakening of strong at that time Polish influences in Slovakia and accelerated the process of strengthening German influences. As a result, not only had Slovakia allowed the Germans in September 1939 to use its territory to attack Poland, but also itself took part in fights alongside the Wehrmacht.

Although after the political change in 1989 it is possible to scientifically study the phenomenon of religiosity also in post-communist countries, it should be humbly recognized that the authentic sociology of religion in Slovakia is still in statu nascendi. This is evidenced, for example, by the fact that in the most famous Slovak sociological journal called “Sociology” only one issue has been devoted to the topic of religiosity during last 30 years (“Sociology”, 2001). We can claim, that researching of religiosity in Slovakia is almost like discovering a “virgin land”. At the same time it should be acknowledged that the development of research of religiosity in the Slovak reality was most positively influenced by the Polish school of sociology. The purpose of this study is to describe the outlined impact and emphasize its importance for researching of Slovakian religiosity.

Opis:
In the public debate, it is argued that Poland avoided a massive drop in output during the 2008/2009 economic crisis in part thanks to substantial nominal zloty’s depreciation against the euro. The Polish case is often contrasted with Slovakia that adopted the euro in January 2009 and, since the Ecofin Council decision in summer 2008, exhibited virtually no nominal exchange rate volatility while facing deep losses in output. In this paper we attempt to validate this contrast by reversing the roles, i.e. checking if Poland really would have faced the same drop – and Slovakia would have remained relatively resilient – if it had been Poland, not Slovakia, that adopted the euro at that point. Our counterfactual simulations based on a New Keynesian DSGE model indicate that, indeed, the Polish tradable output could have been 10-15 percent lower than actually observed in 2009, while the Slovak one – approximately 20 percent higher. This asymmetry results mainly from structural differences between the two economies, such as size, openness, share of nontradable sector and foreign trade elasticities. The difference of this size would have been short-lived (3-4 quarters), and the difference of the nontradable output would have been of much lower magnitude.

Opis:
The Ľubovňa “marble” is red nodular limestone of Oxfordian to Tithonian age, which used to be extracted in several quarries near the town of Stará Ľubovňa in NE Slovakia. It replaced the Hungarian Gerecse “marble” which was extensively used in the Kingdom of Hungary and surrounding countries from the end of the 12th to the first third of the 16th century when its use was interrupted by the Turkish occupation of the area. The Ľubovňa “marble” was used as a substitution especially for Renaissance tombstones in today’s Slovakia and Poland and it was found also in Hungary. It reached the top of its popularity between the mid-16th and mid-17th century. To a smaller extent it was still used in the surrounding territories during the other styles in the 18th and 19th centuries. The “marble” production was probably affected by the political situation and wars. It is possible to distinguish the Ľubovňa “marble” from the Gerecse “marble” and the Adnet “marble” from Austria macroscopically on the basis of its distinct cleavage, and microscopically on the basis of microfacies with Saccocoma, Globuligerina and calcareous dinoflagellates. According to the stable isotopes of 18O and 13C, it is approximately similar to the Adnet “marble”.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. The incidence of Lyme borreliosis (LB) is increasing in many countries in Europe, including Poland and Slovakia. The aim of the study was to analyze the exposure to tick bites and undertaking LB prevention activities among students of medical fields of studies in Poland (PL) and Slovakia (SK). Materials and method. The study was conducted among 611 students from Poland (296 students) and Slovakia (315 students). The applied research tool was the questionnaire. It consisted of questions about exposure to ticks (occurrence of an episode of tick bites, bite site, methods used for tick removal) and the frequency of undertaking preventive actions (using repellents, checking the body after returning from green areas). Pearson Chi-square statistics were calculated to assess significant differences between students from the study countries PL/SK and gender in each country. Results. Among surveyed students the episode of a tick bite was reported by 352 persons (57.6%). Students from PL most frequently removed ticks with tweezers with a swift, steady movement (26.6%), while students from SK removed the tick by applying a fatty substance so that it would come off by itself (30.1%). Most of the surveyed students, being outdoors, did not apply ticks repellents (34.7%) or used them rarely (48.9%). At the same time, 49.4% of students stated that they always checked the body to search for any attached tick after returning from green areas. Conclusions. Considering the fact that the surveyed people were the students of medical fields of studies, and in the future became qualified medical personnel, the frequency of using the analyzed methods of prophylaxis of LB appears to be too small. The results obtained can help in the education of students of medical fields.

Opis:
Okres badawczy obejmuje lata 2000–2014/15. Podstawowe wnioski z analizy danych liczbowych Komisji Europejskiej i opracowań autorskich są następujące: 1) wyniki analizy potwierdzają możliwość przyśpieszenia rozwoju gospodarczego w rezultacie przystąpienia do wspólnego rynku krajów charakteryzujących się luką gospodarczą; 2) tempo procesu konwergencji było jednak silnie zróżnicowane w ramach grupy UE-10; 3) czynników wpływających na zróżnicowanie tempa procesu konwergencji może być wiele, np. siła rynku wewnętrznego, specjalizacja eksportowa i przewaga konkurencyjna oraz wzrost eksportu, napływ zagranicznych inwestycji bezpośrednich, postęp techniczny, wzrost wydajności pracy itp.; 4) tempo zmniejszania luki rozwojowej przez badane kraje było znacznie wyższe w warunkach dobrej koniunktury, a kryzys finansowo-gospodarczy zdecydowanie je osłabił; 5) największą odporność na kryzys wykazała Polska; 6) głęboki spadek PKB w czasie kryzysu 2008–2009 wystąpił w krajach bałtyckich.
The subject of the article is an empirical analysis, the aim of which is to verify the benefits of accession to economic integration grouping for countries with a lower level of economic development. Case studies include: the EU-10 countries from Central and Eastern Europe, in particular Poland and Slovakia. Verification of the integration benefits was carried out by economic growth assessment in terms of convergence, which can be used as a proof of closing the development gap. The subject of evaluation is beta and sigma convergence. Test period covers the years 2000–2014/15. Key conclusions from the analysis of the European Commission figures and authors’ research are: 1) the results of the analysis confirm the possibility of speeding up economic development as a result of accession to the common market by countries with economic gap; 2) the pace of the convergence process was strongly differentiated among the EU-10 countries; 3) there can be a lot of factors affecting differences in the pace of the convergence process e.g.: strength of the internal market, specializing in exports, competitive advantage and exports increase, inflow of foreign direct investment, technological progress, labor productivity growth, etc.; 4) the rate of reduction of the development gap was much higher under conditions of prosperity and economic and financial crisis significantly weakened the catching-up process; 5) Among the surveyed countries, Poland was the most resistant to the crisis; 6) deep decline in GDP during the 2008–2009 crisis occurred in the Baltic countries.

Opis:
The aim of presented article is to examine regularities in the geographical distribution of support for the new political parties in Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia. At the beginning of the study, nationwide results of analyzed parties were compared with results achieved in territorial units. On this basis, the author created an indicator showing the average profit (or loss) of a new grouping in relation to the share of votes at the national level. Subsequently, the author calculated the Pearson's correlation coefficients to evaluate the relationship between results of new political parties in the first elections they gained parliamentary seats. The results of the analysis show that only in case of Czech Republic, it is possible to distinct the territorial units where citizens are more likely to vote for new parties. Nevertheless, most of differences in the geographical distribution of support for new parties in analyzed countries arise from three interrelated factors: the specificity of the territorial unit, ideological autoidentification of population inhabiting a particular territorial unit and popularity of party leaders.

This paper is a review of fundamental information on bark beetles and their interactions with several predisposing factors (air pollution, drought/temperature interactions, windthrows, management activities) that are thought to contribute to the outbreaks in the High Tatra Mountains. The findings of many research projects indicate that the impact of air pollution on bark beetle populations is indirect and complex and that the disturbances in the physiology and natural resistance of trees may be of crucial importance to bark beetle population dynamics. An active forest protection approach is needed to be applied to the secondary Norway spruce forests affected in the past by human activity. Bark beetle populations in natural and near-natural forests (mainly in the upper montane zone) are regulated by natural mechanisms; bark beetles are therefore a natural factor contributing to forest development, including the transition of future generations of spruce.

Opis:
The plethora of tripartite bodies in postcommunist countries seems to suggest the emergence of an East European corporatism. Analysis of arrangements in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland indicates instead the prevalence of illusory corporatism. Token negotiations, non-binding agreements, and exclusion of the private sector demonstrate that tripartite procedures are deployed to introduce neoliberal, not social democratic, outcomes. A path-dependent argument stressing labour's weak class identity best explains these outcomes. East European labour, unlike historic western counterparts, is marked by a weak sense of class interests, disinclination to organize the private sector, and declining support from the workforce, making it unable to emerge as a strong force. It is not labour but the new elites that seek tripartism, hoping thereby to share burdens, conform to European norms, and demonstrate responsiveness to society. Formal tripartism also follows from the legacy of state socialism, giving symbolic voice to the formerly included now headed for exclusion. In the end, tripartism helps secure labour's acceptance of its own marginalization.
