Opis:
Archaeological explorations carried out inside the crypts of Catholic churches typically deliver a wealth of movable historical artefacts, including numerous devotional objects such as pilgrim souvenirs. During excavation works in the crypts of Końskowola parish church of The Discovery of The Holy Cross and St. Andrew the Apostle, two wooden crosses made of dark wood were found. Looking at the history of devotionalism and the pilgrimage movement, it became possible to define the role of the described objects when they reached Końskowola. Type analysis of the material used in the production of the objects can help in further studies on wooden objects brought to Poland over the centuries.

Opis:
An ossuary was found in a brass sarcophagus, dated to 1720 based on a medallion. The archaeological material was mixed with rubbish and sand. Inside the sarcophagus, the remains of both adults and children were discovered. These are believed to be members of the von Kottwitz family, former owners of Konotop. The separation of the material into different types of cloth was quite painstaking and lengthy. Only one of the grave robes has survived in an almost intact condition. It was a simple grave robe without a back. During the analysis of the skeletal remains, it was matched to the red stained skeleton of an infant.

One of the medieval trials by ordeal, the cold water ordeal, regained popularity in the Early Modern Period and served as an important element in witchcraft trials. Floating on water was seen as a decisive proof of guilt and resulted in the accused being handed over to the torturer. This paper discusses the use of the water ordeal in Poland in the sixteenth–eighteenth century, primarily by municipal courts. Among the issues mentioned in the paper there is also the question of the stage of the trial in which the water ordeal was used and whether the accused were undressed before being subjected to the ordeal.

Opis:
The number of archaeological explorations of churches has increased in recent years. Inside medieval or Baroque temples, researchers report much more favourable conditions for the preservation of various kinds of artefacts which have been placed inside coffins as grave goods, in particular organic materials such as silk, leather, and wood). Exploring the northern crypt of St. Nicolas church in Gniew, the researchers’ attention was focused on a child burial (aged 10–14). Despite the large number of exceptional finds supplied by this site, this one stood out as all the entire coffin space had been filled with silk bands and ribbons with green corrosion products on their surfaces. Preliminary examination showed that they were bunches of metal bands which had originally been meant to imitate plant branches. The decision was made to expand traditional technological analyses of archaeometrical tests of both textiles and metal appliqués. The material presented below is the first part of these analyses.

This article uses pollen data on the history of vegetation of several Central and South-Eastern European regions to argue that Polish lands experienced an unprecedented, rapid and profound landscape change around the sixteenth century AD. It suggests that this socio-environmental transformation should be considered a full-scale ecological revolution, which is best understood in the context of similar changes taking place in other parts of Europe and the world in the early modern period.

Opis:
This paper focuses on recapitulating the current state of knowledge on the use of cold water ordeal in witchcraft trials in the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the Early Modern Period. The ordeal, despite being banned by the Catholic Church in 1215, was still in use, which is confirmed by the trials carried out in Lithuania at the turn of the 16th century. It can therefore be concluded that in the 16th century, the cold water ordeal in witchcraft trials started to be used in the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth much earlier than in Western European countries. Nonetheless, there was no single policy defining at which stage of the trial the ordeal should be applied. In consequence, it was carried out either before the official start of the trial or during the proceedings. There were also many regional differences. While the cold water ordeal was used relatively often in Greater Poland and Royal Prussia, the case files known to today’s researchers seem to prove that the situation was rather different in Lesser Poland. While the belief spread by Bohdan Baranowski pointed to women being subjected to the ordeal while fully clothed, information found in source materials and old prints unequivocally shows that the accused were stripped naked before the ordeal.
One of the medieval trials by ordeal, the cold water ordeal, regained popularity in the Early Modern Period and served as an important element in witchcraft trials.
