Opis:
5 valid species of pyroglyphid mites are actually known in Polish fauna. It should be stressed that the knowledge of their occurrence in house-dust, bird nests and other habitats is still poor. The most common pyroglyphid house-dust mites, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, D. farinae and Euroglyphus maynei, were found in samples of dust from houses (Warszawa, Bydgoszcz, Upper Silesia), hospitals (Katowice, Sosnowiec), libraries (Sosnowiec) and port buildings (Gdynia). The both species of the genus Dermatophagoides were also found in house-dust samples in Poznań and Poznań vicinity, whereas E. maynei and D. pteronyssinus - occasionally in stored herbs in Grudziądz. Moreover, Gymnoglyphus longior was reported from house-dust (Tarnowskie Góry, Upper Silesia), debris from a byre in Lesko and from barn litter in Solarnia near Lubliniec, while Hirstia passericola was found in byre debris in Lesko. It seems that D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae are common in house-dust all over the country. The following pyroglyphid mite species - D. pteronyssinus, H. passericola, G. longior - are reported from nests of birds in Poland.

Opis:
Introduction. Ticks (Acari: Ixodida) are vectors and/or reservoirs of many pathogens, i.e. Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia microti. These pathogens are ethiological agents of such diseases as Lyme borreliosis, human granulocytic anaplasmosis and human babesiosis. Objective. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of the Ixodes ricinus in the transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Borrelia afzelii, Borrelia garinii, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, Anaplasma phagocytophilum and Babesia microti in Opolskie Province in Poland. Materials and method. DNA from 222 ticks was isolated by the ammonia method. The pair of primers specific to the flagelline gene was used to detect of B. burgdorferi s. l. To detect of genospecies of this spirochete, three pairs of internal primers were used. In turn, two pairs of primers specific to the 16S rDNA gene and the 18S rRNA were used, respectively, for the detection of A. phagocytophilum and B. microti. Borrelia burgdorferi s. l., A. phagocytophilum, and B. microti were detected in 4.5%, 2.7% and 5.4% of examined ticks, respectively. Results and conclusions. Of the ten ticks infected with B. burgdorferi s. l., B. afzelii was found in seven, undefinied genospecies in two, and mixed infection with B. afzelii and B. burgdorferi s. s. in one. The study demonstrated the potential risk of exposure of humans and animals to infections of B. burgdorferi s. l., A. phagocytophilum and B. microti in the examined area of Poland.

Opis:
Exposure to indoor allergens, especially dust mites has been recognized as a risk factor for sensitization and allergy symptoms that in extreme conditions could develop into asthma. To determine specific antigens responsible for allergy in patients positive for mite allergy skin tests whole protein extracts from the cultured mite species Tyrophagus putrescentiae [TP], and from their excrements were obtained. The proteins were fractionated by SDS PAGE and identified by Western blot. The patient antibodies against particular antigens were identified in serum IgE fraction using anti-human anti-IgE monoclonal antibody. Western blot analysis revealed differences in reactivity of sera from patients positive for standard mite allergy skin tests with fractionated mite antigens. A total of 17 of 30 sera (56.7%) from patients positive to skin tests showed specific cross reactivity with antigens isolated from extracts of TP. The results revealed that 12 out of 30 tested sera (40.0%) reacted specifically with new antigens identified as protein fractions of extracts from excrements of TP. When assessing mite allergen reaction using mixture of mite proteins the results of the test are not satisfactory for determining the antigen causing patient allergy. The results obtained from studies reported here indicate significant discrepancy between the so called standard allergy skin test and what the patient is actually sensitive to. Also, a new class of immunizing protein of about 25 kDa has been identified in excrements from TP reacting with IgE from patients showing allergy to other mite extracts. A total of 4 of 30 sera (approx. 13.3%) from patients positive to skin tests showed specific cross reactivity with antigens isolated from mite excrements rather than from mite whole extracts.
