Opis:
A collection of common wheat cullivars grown in Poland were analyzed for resistance to powdery mildew disease by using eleven differential isolates of Erysiphe graminis f. sp. tritici (Blumeria graminis). Among a total of 69 accessions, 48 cultivars possessed resistance which is attributed to known resistance genes present either individually or in a combination. Four cultivars were resistant to all the isolates used and another four cultivars revealed race-specific resistance which does not correspond to the response patterns of previously documented resistance. Resistance genes Pm2 and Pm6 in a combination were most widely distributed, and genes Pm3d, Pm4b, Pm5 and Pm8 were also postulated.

Opis:
Sixty-six wheat cultivars grown in Belarus, Poland, Russia and the Ukraine were tested for mildew response to a collection of 11 different isolates of Erysiphe graminis DC f. sp. tritici Marchal. Nineteen cultivars have shown a susceptible reaction and eighteen were characterized by susceptible or intermediate responses. Fourteen cultivars revealed isolate-specific response patterns that could be attributed to major known resistance genes or gene combinations. Twelve cultivars have one documented gene: Pm5 in eight cultivars, Pm2 in two cultivars and Pm8 also in two cultivars. One cultivar has two genes (Pm2 + Pm6), while another cultivar carries a combination of three genes (Pm1 + Pm2 + Pm6). Fifteen cultivars were characterized by response patterns not documented so far or by a known resistance response combined with an undocumented resistance. Apparently three cultivars with the T1BL.1RS wheat-rye translocation have a gene suppressing the Pm8 mildew resistance. One cultivar was resistant to all the used isolates. Its resistance might be conditioned by an unknown major gene or combination of genes.

Opis:
The subject of the study was a dynamic population of Sorbus torminalis resulting from spontaneous regeneration from seeds in northern Poland. The population, occupying a fenced plot of 1.72 ha in Forest District Jamy, amounted to 579 individuals. The spatial structure of population and some basic individual traits of trees were recorded, then the growing space of individual trees was examined. The following measures of tree growing space were investigated: crown diameter and projection area, and tree volume. The spatial structure of population was non-random, and there was evidence for effects of population density on tree performance. The observations have to be continued in order to describe optimal growing space of wild service tree; the results could be used to improve in situ conservation of this rare and valuable species.

Opis:
Spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and high-level waste (HLW) resulting from the SNF reprocessing produce significant amount of heat during retardation of alfa, beta, y, particles and emit ionizing radiation, as well as neutrons even after cooling. Therefore, it is recommended to store SNF and HLWin deep geological formations capable to provide isolation from ground waters for a sufficiently long time. Only a few rock types could meet such requirements and a rock salt is among them. In the paper the following topics are presented: categories of radioactive wastes, worldwide review of nuclear waste disposal developments, selection of the appropriate rock formations for location of safe storage facilities as well as the concept of potential site selection for such storage facility in the territory of Poland.

Dosimetric information concerning 4606 workers at the nuclear centre at Świerk (Poland) from 1956 to 2001 and medical records of 575 workers are reviewed. The average cumulative doses per person were 34 mSv (effective dose) and 18 mSv (equivalent dose to hands). The calculated odds ratio of cancers, OR = 0.90 (0.62–1.18; 68% CI), shows a statistically insignificant decrease of the cancer risk among the irradiated workers. No cancer cases were detected neither among 52 people exposed to the highest cumulative doses (from 35 to 653 mSv) nor among 43 workers who had been chronically irradiated for a long time (from 13 to 26 years).

Opis:
Investigations into the abundance of adult D. reticulatus in relation to the effect of climatic conditions (temperature, humidity) on host-seeking behaviour were conducted during the autumn (September-October) and spring (May) activity peaks in 2008–2009 in eastern Poland (51°25’N). The study was conducted in the same habitat where similar examinations were performed in 1999–2000. A comparative analysis revealed that the abundance of D. reticulatus had almost doubled within 10 years. Analysis of data on the humidity and temperature conditions prevailing during tick collection, and on tick abundance in the respective study periods in 1999–2000 and 2008–2009, as well as absence of climatic changes over many years, indicate that the increase in the numbers of ticks may have been a result of a multitude of other factors, e.g. weather or environmental conditions favourable for ticks and their hosts. The substantial differences in D. reticulatus abundance observed during the autumn activity peak (an increase from 126 and 128.6 specimens per collection in 1999 and 2000, respectively, to 247.3 in 2008) demonstrate the considerable effect of the biotic and abiotic conditions prevailing during the development of young and adult stages on the abundance of this tick species. The activity of adult D. reticulatus ticks in the autumn was 2.7-fold higher in comparison to that observed during the spring collection; the difference was statistically significant (p<0.0001). Females dominated in both seasonal activity peaks. The ratio between females and males during the spring and autumn peaks was 3.31:1 and 1.05:1, respectively. The increase in the abundance of the D. reticulatus population implies a higher risk of transmission of tick-borne diseases in the study area, and the necessity to develop and implement effective prevention methods and tick control programmes.

Four newly discovered moldavites from the East and West Gozdnica pits, SW Poland, are characterized. All specimens, including other four, reported earlier, are from Upper Miocene fluvial sediments of the Gozdnica Formation. Their weight varies between 0.529 and 1.196 g. The moldavites are bottle green in colour and have bubbles and inclusions of lechatelierite. Low degree of corrosion suggests short river transport, apparently eastward from Lusatia.

In Lower Silesia, the first Polish moldavites were discovered. To recognize the primary chemical composition and check the morphology of investigated material SE and BSE images were used. Intertills sand deposits of the Augustovian, Great and Eemian Interglacials were recognized in eight borehole sections of the Chełmno Lakeland. Wartanian glaciofluvial sediments were also studied. All these deposits are well defined in the area by lithological analyses of granulation, mineral composition of light and heavy fractions, roundness of quartz grains and calcium carbonate content. Their Great and Eemian Interglacial age is evidenced by palynological analyses. Among various lithological features distinguishing the interglacial deposits from glaciofluvial ones the most important are mineral characteristics such as contribution of light and heavy fractions. Quantitative lithological features of the interglacial and glaciofluvial sand deposits resulted from many geologic and sedimentologic factors.

Opis:
The succession of the Lechówka section near Chełm in south-eastern Poland presents the first complete record of the Cretaceous–Paleogene (K–Pg) boundary in Poland. Samples of the boundary clay were examined for microtektites and shocked minerals to confirm the impact origin of the sediment. The spheroidal fraction reveals morphological and mineralogical features, e.g., spherules, similar to material from the K–Pg boundary as described from elsewhere. The impact genesis of the spherules is confirmed by the presence of nickel-rich spinel grains on their surfaces. The spinels are considered to be primary microlites and, thus, the spherules at Lechówka can be classified as microkrystites. No shocked minerals were noted. The deposits with spherules comprise Aland Mg-rich smectite (Cheto smectite). This almost pure Mg-rich smectite, forming up to 100% of the clay fraction, derived from the weathering of the impact glass. It is proposed that the spherules isolated from the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary clay at Lechówka come from the Chicxulub crater in Mexico.
