The morphological diversity in 25 populations of two native species of Brachypodium occurring in Poland, was studied. Principal component analysis and cluster analysis of morphometric data segregate specimens or populations of Brachypodium into two groups, corresponding to the two species. In most of morphological characters, B. pinnatum and B. sylvaticum are similar to each other. However, in terms of characteristics, such as the hairiness of culms and leaf-sheaths both can also vary much within a single population. In comparison with B. pinnatum, B. sylvaticum always has pubescent abaxial palea surfaces. Apparent differences were not detected between the two ecotypes of B. pinnatum named "Grassland" and "Woodland".

Opis:
Shrub birch (Betula humilis Schrk.) is endangered glacial relict growing in natural and drained fens and transitional mires. At present study we examined karyotypes of 103 individuals of B. humilis, collected in six populations from eastern and northeastern Poland. We found 60% of diploid individuals with 2n = 28. The rest of studied plants were aneuploids with 26, 27, 29, 30 and 31 chromosomes in their karyotypes. High frequencies of aneuploids in Polish populations of B. humilis could be a consequence of: (i) hybridization with congeneric species, (ii) stress resulting from range fragmentation, (iii) karyotype instability of individuals with 2n ≠ 28, or (iv) vegetative reproduction.

The genetic Variation of Reed Grass Calamagrostis arundinacea (L.) Roth was investigated in 25 populations in various geographic regions of Poland. A total of 907 individuals were sampled for electrophoretic analysis of peroxidase loci (11 allozymes). Populations were characterised by genetic parameters e.g. heterozygosity level, Wright's fixation index (F) and polymorphism coefficient (Pg). Mean values of interpopulation variability level (GST=0.0310), total genetic diversity (HT=0.4102) and gene flow between populations (Nm=7.805) were also examined. All the populations were polymorphic and they remain in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium.

The natural stands of Norway spruce in Poland are split between the southern and the northeastern parts of the country. Two so-called "spruceless" zones separate the northern spruce locations from those in the south, one "spruceless" zone is situated in Central Poland, and the other one in the Beskid Mts. Mitochondrial (STS) and nuclear (SSR) markers were used to perform the genetic identification of Norway spruce. Four different variants of haplotypes, "a", "b", "c" and "d", were found to occur in the nad1 locus of STS markers. Populations from the northern range of Picea abies distribution in Poland harboured exclusively haplotypes "c" and "d", except for the Białowieża population which had haplotypes "a" and "c". Populations from the "spruceless" zones contained four types of haplotypes whilst those from southern Poland were mostly composed of haplotype "a". High mean gene diversity was observed for both STS and SSR markers (HT = 0.529, and HT = 0.851, respectively). The total genetic differentiation of Norway spruce populations was very low (FST= 0.088). Two main groups of populations were distinguished in the dendrogram defined by Nei's genetic distances based on microsatellite markers. The distribution of the genotypes was scattered and did not show any connection with the spatial distribution of P. abies in Poland. Only the mtDNA markers were able to differentiate the northern populations of Norway spruce from the southern ones, proving the historical separation between the Baltico-Nordic and the Hercyno-Carpathian ranges of P. abies in Poland. By contrast, the microsatellite data suggested an overlap between the genotypes due to the human manipulation of Norway spruce stands in the past.

The basic aim of the work was to widen the knowledge about variation of Pinus mugo in the Karkonosze (Giant) Mountains and verification of provenance of several, probably planted populations on that basis. Seven populations were sampled, four on hardly accessible precipices of glacial cirques as natural, and three on the topical, mostly plane or only slightly in clined parts of the mountains as potentially alien ones. The variation of the needles was biometrically analyzed in respect of 23 morphological and anatomical characters. Measurement data were subject of multivariate statistical analyses. Results call attention on rather continuous variability of P. mugo in the Karkonosze Mts. The differences among samples were found as relatively low and no direct connections have been detected between variation and provenance from precipices versus plane sites.

Three elm species are native to Poland: wych elm (Scots elm) (Ulmus glabra Huds.), field elm (U. minor Mill.), and European white elm (fluttering elm) (U. laevis Pall.). The epidemic of Dutch elm disease (DED) has led to a decrease in the popularity of elm cultivation. An analysis of forestry data was the first step in the assessment of elm resources. The area of forest stands where elms are dominant has more than doubled since 1978. Lowland alluvial forests rank first in regards to the number of elm localities per unit area of a given forest site type. While this site type is clearly preferred by elms, the majority of elm trees are actually scattered among sites of oak-hornbeam or closely related forests (of the alliance Carpinion betuli). Field research revealed a clear dominance of U. laevis, a species which in the past was predominantly located out of woodland and rarely cultivated. Data analysis indicated that all trees greater than 70 cm in diameter belonged to this species. Data from plots surveyed directly also suggest that the three elm species have slightly different habitat preferences. U. laevis prefers riparian habitats, although the major part of its resources is now on potential sites of oak-hornbeam or closely related forests. U. minor even more often than U. laevis occurs at less humid sites (mostly potential sites of oak-hornbeam or closely related forests), while U. glabra prefers moist slopes. In general, it appears that the impact of DED in the last 20–30 years has been smaller than in the preceding period, however, the disappearance of the disease has not been established. Undoubtedly, U. laevis is the elm species that is least impacted by DED

Opis:
The aim of the study was to estimate the ecotype diversity of Fagus sylvatica L. in the context of the genetic variation within the natural range of its distribution in Poland. The study covered 13 beech provenances from the selected seed stand. Additionally, 13 natural beech populations were subjected to analysis with special consideration taken of the diversity of this species in the forest complexes of the Bieszczady region. The high inter−population variation was proved by way of natural selection processes depending on site−climate conditions. The results point out to the need of selection of provenances to match the individual environmental conditions.

Opis:
The differentiation among three populations of Pinus sylvestris of the Tatra National Park (TNP); Łysa Skała, Siwarowe Pańskie and Wielkie Koryciska has been investigated with regard to eight anatomical traits of needles. These populations were compared to a lowland population of Tuchola Forests. Five analyzed traits: the thickness of epidermis with cuticle, the mean of width of three epidermis cells, the width of needle cross-section, the height of a needle cross-section and the ratio of height to the width of a needle are characterized by a variation coefficient not exceeding 10%. Variation coefficients for the remaining traits: the number of resin canals, the distance between vascular bundles and a Marcet coefficient, range between 15.04 – 24.95%. The needles of the lowland population (Rzepiczna) turned out to be the widest as well as the thickest and with the biggest distance between vascular bundles. The Tatra populations of P. sylvestris have a considerably thicker cuticle together with epidermis compared with the lowland population of Tuchola Forests. None of the individual traits differentiate the populations which have already been regarded as distinct – Łysa Skała, found in the eastern part of the TNP and Wielkie Koryciska, from its western part. However, having carried out a discriminant analysis and Mahalanobis distances, the differentiation of the Tatra Scots pine in relation to its geographical location was reported. The individual character of P. sylvestris found in the eastern and western parts of the Tatra National Park might be a result of their different origin in the last glacial period.

Opis:
A group of 150 persons living in the Lublin province of eastern Poland and occupationally exposed to tick bite were examined by the immunoenzymatic ELISA test for the presence of antibodies against tick-borne Spotted Fever Group (SFG) rickettsiae. The group consisted of 75 forestry workers employed in 3 forest inspectorates and 75 agricultural workers living in 2 villages. As a control group, 43 urban dwellers living in the city of Lublin and not occupationally exposed to tick bite were examined. Among 150 persons occupationally exposed to tick bite, the presence of antibodies against SFG rickettsiae was found in 54 (36.0% of the total). In the control group, the frequency of positive findings was only 4.7%, being significantly smaller compared to the exposed group (p=0.0001). Within the exposed group, the percentage of positive results in forestry workers (50.7%) was greater than in agricultural workers (21.3%); the difference was statistically significant (p=0.0002). Also within this group, the frequency of positive findings in males(46.5%) was significantly greater than in females (21.9%) (p=0.0029). In the exposed group, the positive results tended to increase with the age of the examined persons. However, a significant relationship between age and positive findings was found only in forestry workers (c2=14.207, p=0.00264), but not in agricultural workers and total exposed workers. The frequencies of positive results in forestry workers varied significantly depending on place of work (c2=11.271, p=0.00357). Similarly, the difference between the positive reactions in agricultural workers living in 2 villages proved to be significant (34.2% vs. 8.1%; p=0.0074). The obtained results indicate that people occupationally exposed to tick bite and living in the area of eastern Poland where over half of Dermacentor reticulatus ticks harbour SFG rickettsiae, are under significantly increased risk of infection with these rickettsiae.

The number of Adonis vernalis populations, their size and abundance in xerothermic communities of the Lublin Upland have decreased signifi cantly in the last 40–50 years, which indicates that there is a real risk of species extinction in the studied area. The paper is an attempt to indicate the possible factors which infl uence the decrease of Adonis vernalis populations. Detailed studies were carried out in six sites differing habitat conditions, land use and the size of Adonis vernalis populations. Observations were made of the abundance of blooming and the number of anthers per fl ower. The ability for reproduction was estimated indirectly by the mass of pollen delivered and its biological value. The populations of Adonis vernalis differ in number of anthers per fl ower (94.4 – 131.5, on average), the mass of pollen delivered (0.83 mg – 3.18 mg per 100 anthers, on average), the biological value of pollen and the size of pollen grains. Generally, stronger populations were characterized by better quality and a higher quantity of pollen. Potential energy of pollen in fl owers from Pliszczyn and Łabunie was 69–72%, compared to 36%–47% in the remaining populations. Grass burning did not cause a reduction of potential biological value of Adonis vernalis pollen. Xerothermic swards in Pliszczyn and Kąty regularly burnt developed strong, most abundant populations of Adonis vernalis with favorable pollen. The development of the shrub layer, if it is out of control, stands in the way of satisfactory reproduction of halophilous Adonis vernalis.
W okresie ostatnich 40-50 lat liczba stanowisk oraz liczebność i wielkość populacji miłka wiosennego na Wyżynie Lubelskiej znacznie się zmniejszyła, co wskazuje na realne zagrożenie wyginięciem tego gatunku w zbiorowiskach kserotermicznych na tym obszarze. W pracy podjęto próbę wskazania potencjalnych czynników powodujących spadek zasobności populacji Adonis vernalis L. Szczegółowe badania prowadzono na sześciu wybranych stanowiskach różniących się warunkami siedliskowymi, sposobami użytkowania, a przede wszystkim wielkością populacji miłka wiosennego. Badano obfi tość kwitnienia, liczbę pylników w kwiatach, a do oceny zdolności reprodukcyjnych posłużono się metodą pośrednią oceniając ilość i jakość dostarczanego pyłku. Badane populacje różniły się liczbą pręcików wytwarzanych w kwiatach (średnio 94.4 – 131.5), masą dostarczanego pyłku (0.83 mg – 3.18 mg ze 100 pręcików), wartością biologiczną pyłku oraz wielkością ziaren pyłku. Witalne populacje wytwarzały więcej pyłku o wyższej żywotności i zdolności kiełkowania. Potencjalna energia kiełkowania pyłku wytwarzanego w kwiatach populacji z Pliszczyna i Łabuń wynosiła 69–72%, a w pozostałych tylko 36%–47%. Porównania jakości pyłku, warunków siedliskowych i sposobów użytkowania pozwalają stwierdzić, że wypalanie muraw stosowane na wiosnę nie wpływało negatywnie na potencjał biologiczny pyłku miłka wiosennego. Natomiast pozostawiony bez kontroli rozwój warstwy krzewów wpływa niekorzystnie na rozwój populacji światłolubnego gatunku jakim jest Adonis vernalis.

Morphological features of oospores of Chara baueri A. Braun, one of the rarest charophyte species worldwide, were studied based on 100 oospores collected from a small and temporarily dried mid-field pond near Cedynia, Western Poland. This is the first Polish and fifth presently known locality of this species. For comparison 67 oospores from a German population (similar pond localized near Batzlow, Germany) were also measured. So far, data on morphology of C. baueri oospores as well as the species ecology are limited. The only more detailed study of oospores for this species was earlier performed on 15 oospores from Kazakhstan. Largest polar axis (LPA, length), largest equatorial diameter (LED, width), isopolarity index (ISI = LPA/LED × 100), number of ridges, width of fossa, distance from apical pole to LED (AND) and anisipolarity index (ANI = AND/LPA × 100) were measured. The comparative analysis revealed that the oospores from Poland are generally bigger and more prolate than the German ones. The differences for most of studied parameters were statistically significant. The finding is discussed in the context of habitat differentiation of both studied sites. Moreover, the results obtained of oospore measurements for both populations differs from most of the data known so far from the literature.

In 2010–2012, investigations on Ips typographus populations were carried out in Norway spruce stands recently affected by bark beetle outbreak in the Beskid Żywiecki Mts. in Poland. The aim of the study was to test the usefulness of several traits describing I. typographus populations for evaluation of their actual outbreak tendency. Infestation density, sex ratio, gallery length, progeny number and beetle length were used as the traits. Trait variability was analyzed in relation to infested tree mortality in the current year of observation and outbreak tendency defined by the comparison of data on tree mortality in the current year and that in the year before. The highest infestation density was found in the stands representing the highest tree mortality in the current year and in those characterized by decreasing outbreak tendency. The gallery system with 2 maternal galleries dominated. The sex ratio of attacking beetles inclined towards females (63.8%) and remained stable during 3 years of observations; the highest percentage of females was found in locations being in stabilization/latency outbreak phase. The length of maternal galleries was somewhat negatively affected by infestation density and positively correlated with the number of progeny in the gallery. The average beetle length was 4.800 mm (± 0.293), ranging between 3.718 and 5.817 mm and being the highest in the uppermost class of tree mortality recorded in the current year of observation. The shortest beetles were collected in the stands with increasing outbreak tendency, and slightly longer – in the stands with outbreak stable and decreasing tendencies. None of the traits tested can be selected as a direct indicator for prediction of outbreak tendency in I. typographus populations. Possible reasons of variability in the analyzed traits are discussed. The traits indicate that I. typographus in the study area represent very high reproductive potential, thus the risk of repeated outbreak is very high.

Opis:
Many sedge meadows in western Poland provide suitable habitats for Vertigo angustior Jeffreys and Vertigo moulinsiana (Dupuy) which are regarded as threatened across Europe. Such habitats are often subject to conservation measures aimed at supporting wetland birds in accordance with the European Birds Directive. Such measures, usually involving extensive mowing, may not favour the vertiginids. Both species are protected by another European act – The Habitats Directive. The range of methods used for maintaining the bird habitats is wide: the sites are mowed manually or mechanically in different ways, and the mowing covers the entire site or just selected patches. The aim of this study was to check how the different maintenance methods influenced the vertiginid populations. The abundance of V. angustior and V. moulinsiana was studied at 17 sampling sites along the Ilanka river valley (Lubuskie Province, W. Poland). The sites differed in size, moisture level, vegetation, type of land use and shadiness. The results suggest that extensive land management can be advantageous for botth species only when the site is divided in patches which are mowed alternately in consecutive years.
