Opis:
The aim of the article is to examine whether and what are the characteristics of political science research and reflection conducted in Poland. To achieve this, two dimensions of specificity were distinguished, namely disciplinary specificity (features that distinguish political science from other disciplines, especially those within the social sciences) and local specificity (characteristic features of Polish political science compared to the discipline practiced in other countries, particularly Anglo-Saxon). The specificity of Polish political science was then analysed in four fundamental areas that determine the discipline’s identity: 1) the subject of research, 2) research methods, 3) subdisciplinary structure, and 4) structure of theories functioning within the discipline.

Opis:
In the first part of the article, being the introduction to further considerations, the author familiarizes the reader with the political history of Georgia, predominantly by focusing on the origins of various conflicts, including those with the Russian Federation, which to a significant extent influence the foreign policy of Georgia even today. Within the scope of the next part of the dissertation, the current economic situation of the country in question is depicted, including its tendency to tightening bonds with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and the European Union, regardless of its presidents’ political views and the specificity of the ruling party. Finally, the author attempts to answer the question of what the likelihood that Georgia will join the aforementioned organizations is, especially while taking into account current geopolitical events that may have an impact on the „openness” policy of the European Union, as well as what the direction of further development of NATO will be after the recent change on the position of the president of the United States.

Opis:
After the 2015 parliamentary elections in Poland, the parties that moved to the opposition declared themselves the “total opposition” and adopted the “Street and Abroad” strategy, the aim of which was to organize anti-government protests in the country and to use foreign fora, including above all EU mechanisms, to fight the new right-wing government, criticize its actions and eventually remove it from power. The paper aims to assess the effectiveness of the strategy adopted by the Polish opposition after seven years of right-wing rule. The subject of particular interest is, on the one hand, the evaluation of the “Street” strategy on the example of mass protests concerning courts, abortion, and the media. On the other hand, the “Abroad” strategy was analyzed through the impact of the European Parliament’s resolution on social mobilization, electoral preferences, and the level of support for the ruling party. For this purpose, the leading indicators of support for opposition parties published by opinion polling centers were used in the examples analyzed.

Opis:
The geopolitical location between Russia and Germany has historically determined Poland’s foreign policy, in which Ukraine has been given a privileged place. Polish policy-makers have perceived Ukrainian independence as the main barrier preventing the restoration of Russian imperial ambitions. Consequently, Poland has been unwavering in its commitment to supporting the Ukrainians in their resistance to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. This attitude was visible in Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki’s 2023 lecture at the University of Heidelberg. Nevertheless, relations between Ukraine and Poland and the current Russia-Ukraine conflict are far more complex than is mainly acknowledged. Behind Poland’s support, there is an unhealed wound of Ukrainian nationalism, which the current government in Ukraine does not want to unknowledge. The Ukrainian nationalist ideas, based on the slogan “Nation above all,” are very different from those of the Poles. Upon proper recognition of the multifaceted causes of war and the situation’s complexity, a cease-fire and a peaceful settlement of the Russia-Ukraine conflict could be achieved.

This paper explores the economic and non-economic factors that could potentially lead to a Polish decision to remain within or leave the EU, following a future potential Polexit referendum. The study aims to determine the relative impact of Polish citizens’ values and attitudes on their support for their country’s continued EU membership and integration, at such a crucial time. The research is based on a survey conducted in December 2021, with a stratified sample of 1,517 respondents, and a statistical analysis of the findings. The results suggest that the relative importance of these factors could vary considerably, with economic factors potentially playing a less significant role than sociocultural and political elements. We argue that this projected outcome is likely to be influenced by citizens’ socio-demographic backgrounds, their perceived levels of economic security or insecurity, and differences in their economic and non-economic values, thereby creating potential opportunities for future populist Eurosceptic politicians in Poland to exploit, underlining the potential implications of these findings.

Opis:
The aim of this article is to examine how interdependence of economic policy and social security is perceived in the strategic documents of the Polish government in the area of security and international politics. For the analyses, the author has employed the concepts of economic statecraft and geoeconomics. It has been found that the strategic documents in the area of security do perceive interdependence between politics and economics. Polish strategic documents treat economic factors as merely one of many aspects of security rather than being absolutely dominant. Therefore, those factors cannot be recognised as based on the geoeconomic paradigm. It is worth noting that the economic statecraft tool is not discussed in an in-depth manner – as a separate category of state instruments. Polish strategic documents suggest the awareness that such instruments are used by other states, e.g. Russia with respect to the area of energy. Polish strategic documents are primarily focused on the need to introduce safeguards against such threats – among other things by the application of defensive economic statecraft. The analyses carried out for this article failed to identify any proposals for the development of proprietary Polish economic leverages as an instrument of building up state power – offensive economic statecraft. The author recommends further in-depth research on the perception of interdependence between security and economic policy in other countries as well as popularisation of the concept of economic statecraft in Poland.

Opis:
The article discusses the conceptualisation of fundamental concepts referring to interdependence between security and the economy. The concept of economic security that is dominant in Polish literature on the subject is in most cases identified with macroeconomic disequilibrium and instability. This makes it primarily an economic category. Hence the need to develop a catalogue of risks that are more extensively and comprehensively associated with national security. The article outlines two approaches to these issues. The sectoral approach delineates subcategories of security by industries and sectors of the economy (e.g. energy security). The problem approach singles out individual risk factors understood as mechanisms and phenomena carrying threats to the critical processes in the state. Basing on the problem approach, a catalogue of economic risk factors has been proposed: ownership structure, access to sensitive information and espionage, dependency on key raw materials, dependency on suppliers, state interventionism, corruption and fraud, social and economic instability, dependency on external decision-making centres, difficulties with financing security structures, and immigration.

The global threats posed by the COVID-19 pandemic offered an impetus for the study of the perception of these threats in Poland by professional groups, which in the course of their duties support state authorities in eliminating the effects of the outbreak of the coronavirus infection the capital city of Warsaw. The aim of this study was thus to identify how the threats caused by the COVID-19 pandemic were perceived in Poland. The analysis made it possible to formulate recommendations for dealing with subsequent phases of the epidemic. These are addressed to entities responsible for ensuring health security and may serve the purpose of more effective restoration of national security to the state it was in prior to the epidemic.

Among the social and political outcomes of the pandemic in Poland, one should list the development of anti-COVID social movements. Their specific character, as compared to other social movements, is the subject of exploration in this paper. The basic objective of the paper is thus to analyse the motivations of members and supporters of the so-called corona-sceptic movement at the early stage of its presence in the Polish political arena. Key questions the authors sought to answer concern individuals’ assessment of their situation associated with the pandemic and their attitude to public institutions managing the crisis on behalf of the government. The paper is based on the results of a quantitative research carried out in December 2020.

The aim of the article is to answer the following research question: Through what activities does the Stocznia Foundation ensure involvement of and support to children and youth? The analysis was performed on the basis of theoretical and empirical knowledge. Areas were indicated in which the support of the young generation by NGOs was most often noted as part of activities for local communities. In this aspect, types of assistance were listed, such as: shaping the attitudes of youth, learning soft skills in relations with other people in the decision-making process, social directions of development of children and youth, and assistance in gaining visibility of the realized projects. Apart from that, the positions of the authors of the Equal Opportunities project are based on 20 years of work. The Foundation focuses its activities on the provision of services in the areas that favor building a conscious and safe society through the active involvement of the young ones in efforts for the common good.

Opis:
As soon as the Middle Ages Poland established contacts with the Republic of Venice. The origin of the contacts should be looked for in the ecclesiastical-organizational as well as political-diplomatic relations. In the field of diplomacy both the republics were brought close by the issue of the Turkish threat and their joint work against the Habsburg monarchy. Constant contacts were also seen in the sphere of trade. From the Veneto region cloths, precious stones, glass and books were imported to the Jagiellonian state. Poland sold Polish cochineal, skins, fur coats, corn. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth attracted Venetians with various social statuses; and it was not infrequent that they settled here for good. There were merchants, artisans, musicians, medicine doctors, clergymen and people of other trades between them. They entered court, church and bourgeois structures. Migration of the people coming from Veneto gathered momentum at the beginning of the 16th century, along with the development of the Renaissance. Artists – goldsmiths, architects, sculptors – came, as they were employed at the royal court and in magnate estates. Various artistic items were imported from Venice to Poland. Poles willingly travelled to the town on the lagoons and they expressed their delight with it in poems, memoirs and letters. A lot of outstanding Poles studied in Padua – a superb center of European academic thought. The Commonwealth of Both Nations and the Most Serene Republic of Venice were joined by affinities in a variety of fields of broadly understood culture. There was a constant flow of people, ideas, goods and works of art between them.
