    Opis:
    The subject of this paper is the issue of urban sprawling in the Kraków Metropolitan Area (Poland). Particular attention is paid on the changing role of industry as one of the key elements of development and metropolization of cities in post-socialist, emerging economies. The role of the industry in terms of activation of labor resources has been diminishing, which is connected to the automation of manufacturing processes and relocations of labor-intensive activities to regions with lower production costs. However, the industry, particularly hightech manufacturing, plays a significant role in stimulating research and development sector and generate innovations as a key component of the knowledge-based economy. The innovative industrial companies are one of the most important elements of the structure of metropolitan cities. The analysis of this process is based on data on employment and the operation of selected industrial companies, with particular emphasis on their shift from the city to the suburbs. The process of decentralization of high-order producer services, cultural services as well as advanced informational services is one of the most important features of modern urban areas and has been identified by many researchers.

    Procesy suburbanizacji, których intensywny rozwój w Polsce obserwujemy od lat 90. XX w. wpływają na zmiany w rozmieszczeniu ludności, ruchu naturalnym i wędrówkowym oraz strukturze wieku populacji. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest określenie, w jaki sposób procesy suburbanizacji przyczyniły się do zmian demograficznych w Krakowskim Obszarze Metropolitalnym (KOM) w okresie 1995-2013. Wzięto pod uwagę wskaźniki dynamiki zaludnienia, salda migracji, przyrostu naturalnego oraz udziały ekonomicznych grup wieku ludności. Ponadto, aby odpowiedzieć na pytanie o wpływ procesów suburbanizacyjnych na zachowania prokreacyjne ludności, przeprowadzono badania ankietowe w strefie podmiejskiej i dojazdów do pracy w Krakowskim Obszarze Metropolitalnym. Łącznie zebrano 1020 ankiet. Badania zostały sfinansowane ze środków Narodowego Centrum Nauki przyznanych na podstawie decyzji numer DEC-2012/05/B/HS4/04200 w ramach projektu badawczego.
    Rapid development of the process of suburbanization, observed in Poland since the 1990s has affected population distribution, natural increase and migration as well as the population age composition. The purpose of this study is to determine how the processes of suburbanization have contributed to the demographic changes in the Cracow Metropolitan Area (CMA) in the period of 1995-2013. The following measures were taken into consideration: population growth rates, net migration rate, natural growth rate and the shares of the population age groups. Also, to answer the question about the impact of suburban processes on reproductive behavior of the population in the metropolitan area, a survey was conducted in the suburban and commuting zone of the Cracow Metropolitan Area. A total of 1,020 questionnaires were collected. The study was funded by the National Science Center, awarded by decision number DEC--2012/05/B/HS4/04200 for the project “Transformation of selected social-demographic structures in Cracow Metropolitan Area”.

    Transport zbiorowy to obecnie jedna z najważniejszych usług publicznych świadczonych przez miasta. Jego sprawne funkcjonowanie umożliwia aglomeracjom zrównoważony rozwój. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie wyników badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych wśród mieszkańców Obszaru Metropolitarnego Trójmiasta, które dotyczyły bieżącej oceny funkcjonowania komunikacji miejskiej. Przedstawiona analiza ma na celu określenie aktualnej jakości usług komunikacji zbiorowej oraz możliwości jej usprawnienia w przyszłości.
    Public transport is currently one of the most important public services provided by cities. Its smooth operation enables agglomerations to grow in a sustainable way. The aim of this article is to present the results of a survey conducted among the inhabitants of the Tricity Metropolitan Area, concerning current assessment of the functioning of the public transport there. The presented analysis aims to identify the current quality of public transport services and the possibility of improving it in the future.

    The aim of this analyses was to assess the changes in the organisation and scale of plant production of commercial farms located within varying distances from the core of metropolitan areas. The analysis covered a total of 1,854 commercial farms from Pomorskie, Wielkopolskie, Mazowieckie, Lubelskie, Dolnośląskie and Małopolskie voivodeships that participated in the FADN system over an uninterrupted period between 2004 and 2016. In the study population, entities engaged in production in various functional zones of metropolitan areas (MA) were identified. The study found that in the commercial farms operating in the inner zone of MAs, field cropping and horticulture are gaining importance while livestock production is subject to marginalisation.
    Celem podjętych analiz była ocena zmian w zakresie organizacji i skali produkcji roślinnej gospodarstw towarowych zlokalizowanych w różnej odległości od rdzeni obszarów metropolitalnych. Analizą objęto łącznie 1854 gospodarstwa towarowe z województw pomorskiego, wielkopolskiego, mazowieckiego, lubelskiego, dolnośląskiego i małopolskiego, które nieprzerwanie prowadziły rachunkowość rolną w ramach systemu FADN w latach 2004–2016. W badanej populacji wyodrębniono podmioty prowadzące produkcję w różnych strefach funkcjonalnych obszarów metropolitalnych (OM). Przeprowadzone badania wykazały, że w populacji gospodarstw towarowych prowadzących swą działalność w wewnętrznej strefie OM następuje wzrost znaczenia upraw polowych oraz produkcji ogrodniczej a marginalizacji podlega produkcja zwierzęca.

    The objective of this paper is to analyse the ways in which one of the European Union’s Cohesion Policy instrument, i.e. the Integrated Territorial Investment (the ITI), can be used, with specific reference to the example of the Kraków Functional Urban Area (the KFUA). ITI is an instrument of EU policy and was introduced during the 2014–2020 program period. It was designed to promote the development of functional areas, especially on a metropolitan scale, and to strengthen the co-operation ability of local entities. Research design: The reasoning utilised in this article uses participant observation as the primary research method. The complimentary analytical methods are desk research of documents, written questionnaires and individual direct interviews. It is important to underline the direct involvement of the author in the preparation of the ITI Strategy for the KFUA, participative workshops concerning the introduction of ITIs, and expert reports commissioned by the Kraków Metropolis Association (the KMA). The findings enable one to clarify mechanisms disclosed in the national scale with specific features also present in the KFUA. The first part of this paper includes a brief review of the literature concerning the nature of the metropolitan scale, management of the development of functional urban areas, and deliberation procedures. In the second part, the author presents the results of his qualitative research revealing the way an instrument of ITI is implemented by the KMA. Tools used by the KMA, taking into consideration juridical and cultural conditioning, demonstrate how the ITI instrument can become, beyond financial support for communities, a real creator of a co-operative ecosystem of entities. The added value is to show that the ITI instrument, despite some bureaucratic sluggishness, can be, thanks to understanding the essence of “metropolitan governance”, an approach which builds real territorial co-operation.
