    This paper focuses on the lexical side of the emergency communication of German paramedics who are learning Polish as a foreign language for professional purposes. The aim of the study is to find out which lexical units arise during language courses and how often. To what extent can the acquired vocabulary be used to develop dedicated programmes for foreign language acquisition in medical emergency communication? The analysis shows that the vocabulary collected here depends on the subject, such as ból (pain) or leki (medicines). According to the participants, symptomy (symptoms) and duszności (shortness of breath) are also part of the common vocabulary. Emergency medical communication can be carried out with the question pronouns kiedy (when) and gdzie (where). Among the most frequently repeated lexical units of vital parameters during patient transfer are saturacja (oxygen saturation) and puls (pulse). The vocabulary collected here should help in preparing a description of the competences which should form part of a language course for professional purposes

    The research, conducted in 2021, constitutes a part of the dissertation I am preparing. I surveyed forty Polish high school students, twenty of whom are from Belarus and twenty from Ukraine (ten from eastern Ukraine and ten from western Ukraine). All the students were just beginning their education in Poland and their knowledge of Polish was at a basic level. The respondents repeated specific words after the teacher and independently read aloud sentences containing words that appeared in the first part of the study. In the first part of the article, I briefly describe the similarities and differences occurring in the segmental plane between Polish, Ukrainian, Belarusian and Russian, specifically between the pronunciation of the sounds [ɔ], [w] and [ʈ͡ʂ]. The second part of the article focuses on the most conspicuous results concerning the differences between the pronunciation of the sounds [ɔ], [w] and [ʈ͡ʂ] in Polish depending on the background of the respondents. I compared the results of respondents from Ukraine and Belarus, as well as the results of respondents from eastern and western Ukraine. Whether the words in question were repeated or read by the respondents was also an important factor. The main aim of the presented research is to help teachers of Polish as a foreign language to better understand the process of acquisition of Polish pronunciation by Slavic-speaking groups learning Polish depending on their country of origin, as well as to explain the reason for the pronunciation mistakes made by students coming from Ukraine and Belarus. The conclusions of the study are also intended to help in matching the appropriate teaching methodology for specific Slavic-speaking groups.
    Das Ziel des vorliegenden Beitrags ist es, die besonderen in meine Dissertation aufgenommene Ergebnisse der Forschung, die die Aussprache von Belarussen und Ukrainern im Polnischen beschreiben, zu erörtern. Im Jahr 2021 wurden vierzig polnische Oberschüler: innen, von denen zwanzig belarussischen Herkunft und zwanzig ukrainischen Herkunft untersucht. Wenn es sich um die Oberschüler ukrainischer Herkunft handelt, kommen zehn von ihnen aus westlichem Teil der Ukraine und zehn aus der Ostukraine hervor. Alle untersuchten Schüler: innen fingen ihre Ausbildung in Polen an. Sie beherrschten die polnische Sprache auf einem niedrigen Niveau. Die Sprecher: innen wiederholten nach der Lehrkraft bestimmte Wörter und lasen selbständig die Sätze vor, die in dem ersten Teil des vorliegenden Beitrags dargestellt wurden. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit wurden kurz die Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede beschrieben, die auf der segmentalen Ebene zwischen Polnisch, Ukrainisch, Belarussisch und Russisch auftreten. Der zweite Teil des Beitrags fokussiert sich auf Ergebnisse der Forschung, die die Unterschiede zwischen der Aussprache von Lauten [ɔ], [w] und [͡ʈʂ] im Polnischen in Abhängigkeit von der Herkunft der Untersuchte betreffen. Die Ergebnisse sowohl von Sprechern und Sprecherinnen ukrainischer und belarussischer Herkunft als auch west- und ostukrainischer Herkunft wurden miteinander verglichen. Die Tatsache, wie die Sprecher und Sprecherinnen die fragilen Wörter gelesen und wiederholt haben, bildete einen weiteren, aber auch wichtigen Faktor für diese Untersuchung. Der Schwerpunkt der vorliegenden Forschung ist es, den Lehrern für Polnisch als Fremdsprache auszuhelfen, den Vorgang des Erwerbs von polnischer Aussprache durch Polnisch lernenden ostslawische Sprachbesitzer in Abhängigkeit von ihrem Herkunftsland, kennen zu lernen und besser zu verstehen, sowie die Gründe für die Aussprachefehler von Schülern ukrainischer und belarussischer Herkunft zu erklären. Aus dieser Forschung resultierende Ergebnisse sollten auch bei der Anpassung von entsprechender Lehrmethodik für bestimmte slawischsprachige (in diesem Fall ostslawischsprachige) Gruppen helfen.

    This paper focuses on the emergency communication of German paramedics who are learning Polish as a foreign language. This is to be tested in a role play, in which speech acts occur. Can the recorded speech acts or certain pragmatic phenomena be used in foreign language teaching of emergency communication? The study shows that the majority of patients’ responses are understood by the paramedics, but they respond to them inappropriately. Therefore, it is concluded that language courses for paramedics should focus much more on fixed phrases in Polish. The analysis of the recordings shows that this would enable them to formulate their answers in Polish, and not in German or English. In addition, code-switching sequences were used as means to identify the areas where there is a need for a modification of the programme and exercises during the lessons. The emphasis should lie on non-medical answers to the patient’s linguistic actions as well.
