    Opis:
    On the basis of tombstone inscriptions in the cemeteries of the Lublin region and in the neighbouring Volhynia, the author tries to reconstruct the image of the woman, as it is reflected in the inscriptions. The analysis of positively valued aspects of women’s lives – to whom the inscriptions are devoted – was conducted (e.g., roles related to family axiology, occupation, education). It was found that the tombstone inscriptions reflect the traditional image of the woman, who is primarily a wife and mother. The tombstone inscriptions devoted to the memory of women, as well as the inscriptions in which women speak as senders, are strongly emotionally charged. Few examples of inscriptions (mainly from urban necropolises) refer to spheres outside of family life (e.g., work and education).

    This article is a review of a monograph on genological research on speech species. The objects of this publication are tomb inscriptions from over 60 necropolises in the north-eastern Lublin Region, which is situated within the borders of the Orthodox Lublin-Chelm Diocese and in the western part of the Volyn oblast in Ukraine. These are ethnically, linguistically, culturally and religiously non-homogeneous areas. The analysis takes into consideration the structure, the type of the functions fulfilled by grave inscriptions, the pragmatic aspect and cultural specificity of the analyzed texts. The subject of the review is to discuss the content of the publication and to implement the research goals undertaken by the author. In assessing the scientific value of the monograph, the current methodological solutions and the role of the study in the context of the state of research in Polish text linguistics were taken into account. The reviewed monograph is a reliable empirical study, however, the adopted description model does not take into account semiotic features that would complete the information about the analyzed texts. The book may be a contribution to Slavonic dialectological studies, especially to the indication of mutual Polish-Ukrainian interferences. It constitutes a source for studying the vocabulary of the borderland. The work may be used for comparative studies of funeral texts.

    The work presents the book Antroponimia pogranicza polsko-wschodniosłowiańskiego w świetle inskrypcji nagrobnych (Eng. Anthroponymy of the Polish-East Slavonic borderland in light of tombstone inscriptions) by Feliks Czyżewski. The author, a well-known researcher of the Polish-Ukrainian borderland, collected, classified, elaborated and presented in the form of a dictionary about three thousand anthroponyms from working and closed cemeteries of Eastern Lublin region. It was preceded by a historical description of the region. The author also presented the current and historical state of the cemeteries (Orthodox, Catholic and mixed). Valuable parts of the book are color photographs illustrating various types of inscriptions, as well as maps presenting most important phonetic phenomena in Polish and the Ukrainian dialects, maps with location of the cemeteries where the inscriptions were collected, and bibliography concerning tombstone inscriptions in the Polish-East-Slavonic borderland.
    Recenzja prezentuje książkę Feliksa Czyżewskiego Antroponimia pogranicza polsko-wschodniosłowiańskiego w świetle inskrypcji nagrobnych. Autor, znany badacz pogranicza polsko-ukraińskiego, zebrał, sklasyfikował i opracował oraz przedstawił w formie słownika ok. 3 tysięcy antroponimów z czynnych i zamkniętych cmentarzy Lubelszczyzny wschodniej. Całość poprzedził opisem historycznym regionu, przedstawił stan współczesny i historyczny cmentarzy wyznaniowych (prawosławnych, katolickich i mieszanych). Cennymi fragmentami książki są: kolorowe fotografie ilustrujące różne rodzaje inskrypcji, mapy przedstawiające ważniejsze zjawiska fonetyczne w gwarach polskich i ukraińskich, mapy z rozmieszczeniem miejscowości i cmentarzy, na których zebrano napisy, oraz bibliografia dotycząca inskrypcji nagrobnych na pograniczu polsko-wschodniosłowiańskim.

    Opis:
    The progressing globalization process and the accompanying changes in the approach to the role of borders influence the perception of border areas. For decades, borderlands were treated as peripheral. In many cases it resulted in impeding the processes of socio-economic development, which further deepened the isolation and peripherality of those areas. The article presents selected results of research conducted by the author in the area of the Polish-Ukrainian borderland, related to shopping tourism. Shopping tourism is a significant factor in the development of peripheral areas. According to official statistics, as many as 94% of foreigners visiting Poland in 2017 declared shopping as the purpose of their visit. It was the Ukrainian citizens who spent the most on shopping in Poland in 2017. They spent over PLN 750 on the purchase of products and services per one person crossing the border. In the same period, Belarusians spent PLN 624 on purchases in Poland, Lithuanians PLN 532, Russians PLN 455, Germans PLN 461, Slovaks PLN 315, and Czechs PLN 285 per person. In the Polish-Ukrainian border area, 91% of expenses of Ukrainian citizens in Poland are incurred at a distance of less than 50 km from the border (89% in an area up to 30 km). This means that in an area within 50 km from the border with Ukraine, revenues related only to the shopping of Ukrainian citizens travelling to Poland amount to over PLN 6 billion. Expenses related to shopping tourism affect the development of entrepreneurship on the Polish-Ukrainian border.

     Celem tego artykułu jest omówienie nazw potraw z mięsa w mowie Polaków na dawnych Kresach południowo-wschodnich. Przedmiotem moich badań jest nazewnictwo i charakterystyka pokoleniowa nazw lokalnych potraw przygotowywanych i spożywanych jako posiłki świąteczne – dania z mięsa przygotowywane na niedzielę, święta lub podczas świniobicia. Analizy koncentruję wokół dynamiki zmian w zakresie funkcjonowania nazw pożywienia.
    The purpose of this article is to discuss the names of meat dishes in the speech of Poles in the south-eastern borderlands. The subject of my research is the nomenclature and generational characteristics of the names of local dishes prepared and eaten as festive meals – meat dishes prepared on Sundays, holidays or during pig slaughter. My analyses revolve around the dynamics of change in the functioning of food names.

    Przedmiotem artykułu jest imiennictwo męczenników pogranicza polsko-ukraińskiego na przełomie XIX i XX wieku, przedstawione w kontekście ich życia i wydarzeń religijno-historycznych. Celem omówienia jest zbadanie w aspekcie diachronicznym i porównawczym wyekscerpowanego ze źródeł historiograficznych materiału antroponimicznego, w odniesieniu do dawnego imiennictwa regionalnego pogranicza i ziem etnicznych Ukrainy. Przeprowadzone badania wykazały ścisły związek analizowanych onimów z ukształtowanym w czasach historycznych ukraińskim systemem antroponimicznym: imiona w ukraińskiej wersji językowej w większości znajdują poświadczenie w kalendarzu bizantyjsko-ruskim, zaś nazwiska wyraźnie nawiązują do antroponimii tych części pogranicza polsko-ukraińskiego, z których pochodzili ich nosiciele, ujawniły też znaczne podobieństwo do imiennictwa terenów dawnej Ukrainy: Wołynia i województwa ruskiego. Antroponimy o polskich cechach językowych świadczą o specyfice uwarunkowanej typowymi dla terenów pogranicza kontaktami międzyetnicznymi.
    The subject of the article are the names of the martyrs of the Polish-Ukrainian borderland at the turn of the 19th ant 20th centuries, presented in the context of their lives and religious and historical events. The aim of the discussion is to examine in a diachronic and comparative aspect the anthroponymic material excerpted from historiographic sources in relation to the former regional names of the borderland and ethnic lands of Ukraine. The conducted research showed a close relationship between the analyzed onimos and the Ukrainian anthroponymic system developed in historical times: the names in the Ukrainian language version are mostly confirmed in the Byzantine-Ruthenian calendar, and the surnames clearly refer to the anthroponymy of those parts of the Polish-Ukrainian borderland from which their bearers came, also revealed a significant resemblance to the names of the former Ukrainian territories: Volhynia and the Ruthenian voievodeship. The anthroponyms about Polish linguistic features testify to the specificity conditioned by the interethnic contacts typical of the borderland.

    Wołodymyr Łys to jeden z najpoczytniejszych i najbardziej rozpoznawalnych współczesnych pisarzy ukraińskich, który w zasadzie już od dawna ugruntował swoją pozycję na arenie literackiej. Napisał wiele powieści, prawdziwą jednak popularność przyniósł mu utwór Stulecie Jakuba, który doczekał się kilku wznowień, a nawet ekranizacji telewizyjnej. Autor porusza w nim wiele ważkich tematów, jak chociażby kwestie tożsamości narodowej, skomplikowanej historii ukraińskiej, pamięci itd., celem niniejszego artykułu jest jednak spojrzenie na wspomniane dzieło przez pryzmat stosunków i wątków polsko-ukraińskich. Na kartach analizowanej powieści przewija się sto lat historii Ukrainy, w którą uwikłany jest także jej bohater – Jakiw Mech. Historię swego życia opowiada z perspektywy przeżytych niemal stu lat, na których przestrzeni był obywatelem Rosji, Polski, Niemiec, Związku Sowieckiego i wreszcie wolnej Ukrainy. Akcja powieści rozgrywa się na terenie należącego przed wojną do II Rzeczypospolitej Polesia, gdzie bohater ma wiele okazji do wchodzenia w interakcje w Polakami. Na początku są to doświadczenia niezbyt pozytywne (spotkanie ze zubożałym szlachcicem-„panem”), kiedy jednak Jakub trafia do wojska polskiego, udaje mu się nawiązać bardzo dobre relacje z polskimi dowódcami, a nawet ożenić się z polską szlachcianką. Niezwykle poruszającym momentem analizowanego utworu jest próba odniesienia się do tragicznych wydarzeń wołyńskich z 1943 r. Autor pisze o tych wydarzeniach z wielkim wyczuciem, nie wdając się w dywagacje o szukaniu winnych. Stwierdza, że każda śmierć jest wielką tragedią, a oba narody wiele podówczas wycierpiały. Wbrew licznym, nierzadko krzywdzącym stereotypom, a także różnym ocenom minionych wydarzeń, dokonywanym przez historyków oraz polityków z Polski i Ukrainy, Łys zauważa, że nie wszystko w relacjach między tymi Polakami i Ukraińcami było złe, że jedni i drudzy potrafili żyć obok siebie, tworząc wspólną historię. I choć w kontaktach polsko-ukraińskich czasem pojawiała się nierówność, zazdrość, protekcjonalizm, a czasem nawet pewna doza pogardy, to – jak przekonuje ukraiński pisarz – więcej te dwa narody łączy, niż dzieli.
    Volodymyr Lys is one of the most widely-read and recognisable contemporary Ukrainian writers, who has long established his position in the literary arena. He has written many novels, but he gained widespread popularity with the novel Jacob’s Century, which was reissued several times and even filmed for television. The author deals with many important topics within, such as issues of national identity, complicated Ukrainian history, memory, etc. However, the purpose of this article is to look at Volodymyr Lys’s work from the perspective of Polish-Ukrainian relations. The pages of the novel present a hundred years of the history of Ukraine in which its hero – Jacob Mekh – is also entangled. He tells the story of his life from the perspective of almost one hundred years, during which he was a citizen of Russia, Poland, Germany, the Soviet Union and, finally, a free Ukraine. The novel takes place in Polisie, which belonged to the Second Polish Republic before the war, and where the hero has many opportunities to interact with Poles. At first, these experiences are not very positive (meeting with the impoverished nobleman ‘master’, for example); however, when Jacob joins the Polish army, he manages to establish very good relations with his Polish commanders, and even marry a Polish noblewoman. An extremely moving moment in the novel is the attempt to deal with the tragic events in Volhynia in 1943. The author writes about these events with great sensitivity, avoiding a debate about who was guilty. He states that every death is a great tragedy and that both nations suffered a lot at that time. Contrary to numerous, often harmful stereotypes, as well as various assessments of past events made by historians and politicians from both Poland and Ukraine, Lys notes that not everything in the relations between these Poles and Ukrainians was bad, and that both were able to live side by side, creating a shared history. And although inequality, jealousy, protectionism and, sometimes, even a bit of contempt appeared in Polish-Ukrainian contacts, this Ukrainian writer argues that these two nations are more united than divided.
