The author considers the possible application of the cognitive approach to teaching Polish grammar to Ukrainians, both in its theoretical and practical aspect. She points to the differences in realization of grammar categories in Polish and Ukrainian and analyzes the relationship between the distinctions of categories in these languages and common system errors made by the Ukrainians speaking Polish. The author puts particular emphasis on those errors that can disturb communication between Poles and Polish speaking Ukrainians.
W artykule jest omawiana możliwość kognitywnego podejścia do nauczania Ukraińców polskiej gramatyki, rozumianej zarówno w aspekcie teoretycznym, jak i praktycznym. Wskazuje się na różnice dotyczące realizacji kategorii gramatycznych w języku polskim i ukraińskim, analizuje się zależności między kategorialnymi odrębnościami w rozpatrywanych językach a typowymi błędami systemowymi w polszczyźnie Ukraińców, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem tych błędów, które mogą powodować zakłócenia komunikacyjne w polskojęzycznym dyskursie Ukraińców z Polakami.

Artykuł przedstawia syntetycznie historię języka polskiego jako obcego, dotychczas pomijaną w opracowaniach historycznojęzykowych. Autorka przeanalizowała wszystkie istniejące opracowania książkowe dotyczące historii języka polskiego, zwracając uwagę na wzmianki i omówienia podręczników, słowników oraz gramatyk języka polskiego przeznaczonych dla cudzoziemców. Podkreśla, że w dobie średniopolskiej takie opracowania pisali nie Polacy, lecz cudzoziemcy (Niemcy i Francuzi). W tekście znalazły się też informacje dotyczące ekspansji języka polskiego w XVII/XVIII wieku na ziemie wschodnie i północne Rzeczpospolitej Obojga Narodów, także poza jej granicami. Na końcu artykułu autorka przedstawia ogólną ideę przyszłej monografii poświęconej historii nauczani języka polskiego jako obcego.
This article presents a synthesis of the history of Polish as a foreign language, which has previously been omitted in historical and linguistic studies. The author analysed all existing studies published in book form on the history of the Polish language focusing on the indications and discussions of handbooks, dictionaries and grammar compendia of the Polish language intended for foreigners. She stresses that in the Middle Polish age such resources were written not by Poles but foreigners (Germans and the French). In the text, she also includes information on the expansion of the Polish language in the 17th and 18th centuries onto the eastern and northern lands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and outside its borders. The author concludes her article with a general outline of a future monograph devoted to the history of teaching Polish as a foreign language.

The entire period 1944-2018 was divided chronologically into two parts: the period 1944-1989, which was the period of the Polish People’s Republic (PRL), when Poland was part of the Socialist Bloc, led by the USSR, and the period 1989-2018, when the Polish authorities and society built a free and independent Republic of Poland in unison. In the former period, special attention is given to the period 1978-1990, when Cardinal Karol Wojtyła’s election as Pope John Paul II first and the establishment and activity of the Solidarity movement next made Poland a country well-known and admired all over the world, which largely influenced the transformation of the awareness of the Polish community in many countries. All this constitutes a background for the presentation of the history of education of the Polish community abroad, foundation of schools of the Polish language and culture at numerous Polish institutions of higher education, with the University of Warsaw in the lead and fi nally, the process of developing Polish Studies abroad as well as the process of integrating Polish and foreign specialists in Polish studies in the period 1997-2018.

On the occasion of Poland’s regaining its independence in 1918, several papers have been written to depict the development and transformations of the Polish language over the period 1918–2018. However, none of the studies covered popularising Polish by emigrant communities in various countries around the world, preserving it and passing it down to new generations in a bilingual environment, and its teaching not only in ethnic schools but also in higher education institutions. This paper addresses the abovementioned issues by presenting relations between the Polish state and emigration communities in the period 1918–1939 first. A characteristic typical of this period was the fact that governmental authorities treated emigrants and their descendants as Poles around the world who may pursue the objectives of the Polish foreign policy. With this in mind, the World Union of Poles (Światpol) was established in 1934, which was opposed by representatives of the Polish American community. A further part of the paper presents the organisation of summer school of the Polish language and culture at the University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University in Kraków beginning from 1931, teaching of the Polish language in Polish schools abroad and aid provided to them by Poland, and finally, courses of Polish and programmes in Polish Studies offered at foreign universities.

The article presents the most important language rules and tendencies in teaching Polish as a foreign language. The author fully discusses word lists that are obligatory on different levels of proficiency in Polish language, pointing out to their advantages and disadvantages. She reminds about the necessity of completing such lists caused by intensive globalization and computerization. The article presents also problems concerning language used by young peo-ple nowadays, that is not only under the process of constant changes but it also becomes ‘out of date’ very quickly. Using fashionable words and words that have become commonly used as an example the author of the article proves the importance of language intuition while preparing lists of vocabulary for a certain level of language proficiency. The author concen-trates also on describing problems concerning methods of teaching Polish as a foreign lan-guage that are connected with the rapid evolution of the language.

This paper presents an analysis of sentences with language units jeszcze (yet, still) and już (already, yet), contained in textbooks for teaching Polish as a foreign language at levels A1 and A2. The aim of the analysis was to distinguish the meanings of these units. At the lowest levels of command of Polish, analogy particles jeszcze and już and temporal exponents jeszcze and już are the most common units. This paper also proposes preliminary forms of defi nitions adapted to the pre-intermediate level of command of Polish.

Celem artykułu było przedstawienie zagadnienia mniejszości etnicznych w Polsce w kontekście dydaktyki języka polskiego i kultury polskiej jako obcej. W tekście zostały opisane najważniejsze aspekty związane z tym rodzajem społeczności w Polsce i rozważania dotyczące tytułowej problematyki na zajęciach dla cudzoziemców uczących się polszczyzny. W pracy zawarto również ustalenia teoretyczne sytuujące tematykę mniejszości etnicznych w obszarze geografii kulturowej. Zamieszczono też wyniki badania orientacji jego uczestników odnośnie do tytułowej tematyki oraz ich preferencji związanych z podejmowaniem tego tematu na zajęciach z języka polskiego i kultury polskiej. Grupa ankietowanych obejmowała 91 uczestników lektoratów języka polskiego na poziomach B2, C1 i C2, a zaprezentowane dane pozyskano z ankiety złożonej z pytań głównie o kafeterii zamkniętej. Większość respondentów potrafiła wymienić dwie bądź jedną mniejszość etniczną, a także wyraziła chęć zgłębiania badanej tematyki i włączania jej do programu zajęć z języka polskiego i kultury polskiej. Najwięcej ankietowanych zadeklarowało zainteresowanie zabytkami i atrakcjami turystycznymi związanymi z kulturą mniejszości etnicznych w Polsce, co zawarto w podsumowaniu artykułu i opisanych w nim propozycjach praktycznego wykorzystania wniosków wyciągniętych z badania. Analiza teoretyczna i interpretacja wyników ankiety pokazały, że tematyka mniejszości etnicznych stanowi interesujący dla cudzoziemców element wiedzy o polskim społeczeństwie.
The aim of the article was to present the issue of ethnic minorities in Poland in the context of teaching Polish language and culture as foreign ones. The text describes the most important aspects related to such communities in Poland and reflects on the title issues during classes for foreigners who learn Polish. The work also contains theoretical findings situating the subject of ethnic minorities in the area of cultural geography. It also includes the results of a study on the knowledge of Polish language learners on the topic and their preferences concerning discussing minority issues during Polish language and Polish culture classes. The group of respondents included 91 participants of Polish language courses at the B2, C1 and C2 levels, and the presented data was obtained with the use of a survey consisting of questions mainly in the form of cafeteria-style checklist. Most of the respondents were able to name two or one ethnic minority, and expressed the willingness to explore the subject matter and include it in the curriculum of Polish language and Polish culture. The largest number of respondents declared their interest in monuments and tourist attractions related to the culture of ethnic minorities in Poland, which is included in the summary of the article and the proposals for practical use of the conclusions drawn from the described study. The theoretical analysis and interpretation of the survey results showed that the subject of ethnic minorities is an element of interest for foreigners learning about Polish society.

Artykuł poświęcony jest frazeologii porównawczej. Porównano w nim związki frazeologiczne znajdujące się w podręczniku E. Rybickiej Nie taki diabeł straszny… Podręcznik frazeologii dla obcokrajowców ze związkami wyrazowymi występującymi w języku słoweńskim. Podstawą podziału materiału było kryterium formalno-znaczeniowe oraz kulturowe – zbadano, które z tych związków mają taką samą, podobną, czy inną strukturę, które znaczą to samo lub co innego i jaki jest ich zakres użycia w obu językach.
The article deals with comparative phraseology. It compares phraseological units which can be found in the textbook Nie taki diabeł straszny… Podręcznik frazeologii dla obcokrajowców [The devil is not as black…Textbook of phraseology for foreigners] by E. Rybicka with the corresponding Slovene phraseological units. The main criterion for the division was that of formal and semantic correspondence, based on the semantics and the structural form of the phraseological equivalent. We examined which of the phraseological units have identical, similar or different structure, which carry the same or different meaning and what is the scope of their usage in both languages. The comparative analysis demonstrated three main types of equivalency – full, partial and substitutionary.

The article is devoted to comparative phraseology. The author compares Polish and Slovene phraseological units which include the words byk – bik, wół – vol, krowa – krava, cielę – tele. She analyses their usage and metaphorical meaning in both languages. The result of the analysis is a list of characteristics humans attribute to livestock.
Artykuł poświęcony jest frazeologii porównawczej. Zestawiono w nim ze sobą polskie i słoweńskie związki wyrazowe zawierające komponent byk – bik, wół – vol, krowa – krava, cielę – tele. Przyjrzano się również użyciom i znaczeniom przenośnym tych słów w obu językach. Efektem analizy związków było uzyskanie cech charakterystycznych, które człowiek przypisuje wymienionym zwierzętom domowym.

Teaching Polish as a foreign language is booming. What qualifies to make such a statement is the growing number of better and better coursebooks created on the basis of communicative approach, the increased number of methodological studies, where efforts are made to describe the character of teaching our language and the growing number of organizations, not only of university type, which offer courses for foreigners and postgraduation studies of teaching Polish as a foreign language. During lessons of Polish language the most modern techniques of communicative approach are used, which guarantees more effective acquisition of our very difficult flexive language by foreigners. However, there is a certain area where not much research has been done so far: there is still a shortage of satisfactory comprehensive methodological proposals of teaching literature. Therefore, it is worthwhile considering where this worrying shortage results from and making an attempt to formulate at least a few methodological directives, which could be translated into a modern curriculum of teaching Polish as a foreign language.

In the first part of the article, the author defines teaching Polish as a foreign language (Polish glottodidactics) as a field of scientific research, identifies its subfields, among which she pays to special attention to Polish glottodidactic linguistics. She indicates the possible directions of its development, both in the area of theoretical deliberations and practical studies. The second part of the article discusses the contents of the current volume of this journal.
W części pierwszej artykułu zdefiniowano glottodydaktykę polonistyczną jako naukę, wskazano na jej subdyscypliny, wśród których szczególnie przyjrzano się polonistycznemu językoznawstwu glottodydaktycznemu. Wskazano także na perspektywy rozwoju tej gałęzi nauczania języka polskiego jako obcego tak w aspekcie teoretycznym, jak i naukowym. Część druga stanowi omówienie treści zawartych w niniejszym tomie czasopisma.
