- The paper focuses on the idea of the professional teaching of oriental langu-ages in Poland in the 18th century. During the reign of Stanisław August Poniatowski, in 1766 in Constantinople the Polish school of oriental languages was established. The aim of this institution was to prepare young Polish and European men for their future duties as dragomans, that is interpreters of oriental languages. The school existed until 1795 and, during a period of almost thirty years, educated only eleven alumni in total. Another place where future dragomans were to be educated was a town located within Polish confines – Kamieniec Podolski. Unfortunately, the project of establishing another educational institution there was never carried into effect.
