Politeness is a phenomenon that has recently been linguistically studied. These are linguistic forms and formulas that can be used in certain communication situations. The so-called pragmatic component plays an important role here. This is particularly evident in the case of interspecific confrontation. This can be helped by bilingual lexicographical works, which can be of great help to all a foreign language learner. The article discusses the advantages of the recently published lexicographical works of Małgorzata Marcjanik, Silvia Bonacchi, and Agnieszka Frączek: Polsko-niemiecki słownik etykiety językowej.

This is a presentation of Polish immigrants who came to Brazil in the 19th and 20th centuries, now the second biggest Polish community in the world. In my presentation, I intend to describe the reason of the emergence of the population. Then, I continue to show the history of the community in Brazil, especially in Curitiba, the “Polish’’ capital of Brazil. Next in my presentation is the situation of the population of Polish origin in Brazil. I present different organisations which are a part of this community. What is more, I also describe the Parana region as a with the biggest concentration of residents with Polish roots. I also mention how Polish traditions are cultivated.

The meaning of bilingual corpora in the Polish-Lithuanian comparative studiesIn his article, the author compares and contrasts the results of his own research on the hypothetical modality in Polish and Lithuanian: a) carried out together with Danuta Roszko, using the traditional method (without use of bilingual corpora in the 90s); b) with use of parallel Polish-Lithuanian corpora resources. As for the contrast of the two methods, special attention has been drawn to the lexical exponents singled out. The use of the corpora resources resulted in the fact that the number of exponents of hipothetical modality singled out in the two languages has slightly risen. Moreover, the borders between the corresponding groups of exponents have become more distinct and obvious. There has been confirmed a possibility of using the corresponding groups of exponents to express the meanings of the adjacent groups. The conclusion has been drawn that this phenomenon is as obvious now as it was earlier expected (in studies without use of bilingual corpora). The separate analysis of corpora resources with the division into the material being a) mutual Polish-Lithuanian translations (i.e. from Polish into Lithuanian and vice versa) and b) translations into Polish and Lithuanian from third languages (here: from German, English or Russian) does not significantly influence the number and diversity of the lexical exponents applied in the two languages. This fact proves a high competence of the translators. The formal resemblance of some of the Polish and Lithuanian exponents does not have a significant influence on which form to choose in the target language. In the translations from Polish into Lithuanian, part of the lexical exponents are conveyed with morphological exponents (lack of such in Polish). The hypothetical modality understated in Polish is sometimes clarified in translations into Lithuanian with the help of morphological forms. In some translations from Lithuanian into Polish the total omission of meanings (also the hypothetical) can be noticed, which results from applying the Lithuanian modus relativus forms. In several cases where some Lithuanian-Polish divergences in translations from Lithuanian into Polish have been noticed, a preliminary comparison of a Lithuanian original material and its translation into Russian can suggest that despite the confirmed direction of translation (from Lithuanian into Polish), it can indeed be a translation from Russian into Polish. However, proving this hypothesis requires the establishing of a trilingual Polish-Lithuanian-Russian corpora for the selected material to allow systematic and consistent studies in this direction. The author gives statistical data for the Polish-Lithuanian lexical exponents of hypothetical modality to distinguish between the mutual translations (Polish-Lithuanian) and those of third languages.

In the article the emotion of love is discussed, based on reference books for travelers. Selected phrasebooks for German and Polish users were researched, starting from their first issues dating back to the 16th century to new publications from the early 21st century. The aim of the paper is to establish, whether in the phrasebooks, which in principle present language behavior in typical everyday life situations, love motifs are present, and whether there are any differences in this area in the perspective of time. In addition, picture motifs, which are related to the above mentioned topic, are also briefly discussed here.

The aim of the paper is to explore the process of r obstruentisation which can be found in Polish in the ‘trapped’ context, i.e. between two obstruents or at the end of the word after an obstruent. More specifically, in order to explain the mechanics of the [r] > 'rz'/'sz' shift, the author looks at the phenomenon of sonorant devoicing and some historical facts concerning the development of r. Since r obstruentisation can also be found in a closely related Czech, the data from both languages are confronted and discussed. The solution offered here is based on the analysis of w obstruentisation proposed by Cyran and Nisson (1998).

The aim of this paper is a comprehensive examination of the contemporary collections and dictionaries of Polish proverbs for the young audience. The abundance of such publications in Poland enables the author to have a close look at numerous issues related to paremiography itself as well as the youngest readers. The paper analyses the content of the collections and dictionaries with a special focus on the selection of proverbs, the presentation of their semantics and pragmatics, their arrangement in the books and the illustration of their usage. The analysis reveals many differences between the collections regarding the number of items, their typology, the description of their meanings and use as well as the illustrative content. The paper suggests integrating the description of the contemporary proverb dictionaries for children with educational material with an eye to describing the ways in which proverbs are presented, explained and taught.

In this paper, I wish to present the complexity of Jewish-Polish relations from the 19th century until the interwar period, with emphasis on sociolinguistic issues. I will illustrate the circumstances of the contact between the Polish and Hebrew languages. Poles and Jews, who lived side by side, developed successful relationships, but mainly in the criminal underworld. That was reflected in a sociolect – a dialect of criminals that constituted a mixture of Polish, Yiddish, Russian, and several other languages, including quite a few Hebrew words, which with time adopted new meanings. Moreover, I will provide some examples of Hebrew words used in Polish criminal jargon, as well as those which have been coined in every-day Polish. Then I will refer to some Hebrew words that are not connected with a world of crime and are still in use in spoken Polish.

The aim of the article is to show the Polish-Brazilian evolution of bilingualism throughout ages. his paper shows different definitions and types of bilingualism, taking into consideration a comparison between the Polish and Portuguese language. Furthermore, I present a review of 150 years of Polish citizens’ history in Brazil. It presents their difficulties and the approach of the Brazilian government from the 19th to the 20th century. The most significant  subject are Polish schools and organizations. Their history shows how the command of Polish and Portuguese changed throughout ages. There were different conditions, affecting the command of languages in the Polish Diaspora, such as the familial approach or access to Polish culture. I also mention which organizations and people had the biggest impact on Polish citizens in Brazil. I also describe the existing attitude to both cultures and languages in Polish communities. Apart from that, I try to understand the identity and acquaintance of Polish culture nowadays and show actions as a resultof which Polish language and history are promoted nowadays.

The article is devoted to the structural basics of The Large Polish‑Ukrainian Phraseological Dictionary. Until recently, there had been no significant bilingual phraseological dictionary, which had made it difficult to comparatively study the phraseological systems of Polish and Ukrainian. The dictionary is based on lexicographic publications of various types, national language corpuses, and content. The article explains the principles of selecting phraseological units for the dictionary. Some phraseological units/idioms became the subject of lexicographic study for the first time. In detail is described the structure of the word explanations. During the selection of Ukrainian equivalents to the Polish output, taken into account is the fact that there are phraseological interlanguage homonyms – phraseological units/idioms that sound the same or similar in the two languages but that have different meanings. The dictionary contains an alphabetical register that includes all the components of the expressions/units. Thanks to such referencing, the reader can find the appropriate phrases in a single one word. The article describes the possibilities for the theoretical and applied solutions in the dictionary’s composition.

Vernon Lee, pseudonym of the writer Violet Paget (1856-1935), was born in France, daughter of a Polish refugee. After having chosen Tuscany as her new homeland, she began composing several of historical, artistic, essayistic and literary works. Mostly important, among the narrative, are the Fantastic Stories and Ghostly Tales where landscapes and characters of ancient Italian history are combined with memories of her origin country. Polish people are the main characters of the “noir” tales “Amour Dure” and “The Legend of Madame Krasinska”, both of 1892.

The reception of refugees on Polish territory remains a subject of tensions between Poland and the European Union, following the question of migrant relocation on European soil, which emerged in 2015. However, beyond the various political, economic or even cultural questions that may have been raised, we can wonder about the exact meaning of the Polish lexeme uchodźca (“a refugee”), which is at the heart of the debates. The study of the semantic features that the Poles themselves associate with this word is decisive for better understanding this nation in its positions towards the “refugee question”. These semantic features, deriving from the representations of the speaking subjects rather than the dictionaries or the international law is called in cognitive ethnolinguistics cognitive definition. Therefore, the numerous features of such “refugee” definition may be not only related to politics and economics but they can have also a strong sociocultural, geographical, biological, psychical and even religious dimension. These features will allow us to present three portraits: the portraits of the threatening-refugee, of the threatened-refugee and a portrait of another kind: the benevolent-refugee.

This paper argues that a cognitive, constructional, view of the English categories of tense, aspect, and mood (‘TAM’) influences comprehension resulting in a more accurate grammatical performance by Polish users of English. Five English constructions considered to be transference pitfalls for Polish users are highlighted through juxtaposing original examples from The Hobbit by Tolkien (1937/1978) with three Polish renditions. The pitfalls addressed in this paper concern absence of equivalent Polish constructions to English expressions in the perfect aspect, the progressive aspect and to English constructions which ‘lexicalize’, i.e. convey with words, a compilation of the perfect and the progressive aspects. The Polish versions of the examples analysed and discussed in the present paper demonstrate a variety of means in which Polish grammar is used to handle the disparities between the English and Polish versions. The objective of the paper is to apply a cognitive interpretation to the aforementioned English constructions.

The end of taboo? – Linguistic and functional view on the Arsch / dupa lexeme in German and Polish phraseology The analysis center includes idiomatic expressions in German and Polish with the Arsch / dupa component. The aim of the analysis is to indicate the catalog of functions that are expressed with this type of idioms and to answer the question whether the analyzed component of idiomatic expressions still exhibits features of vulgarism and is covered with language taboo. Due to the richness of the material and the multiplicity of functions of the lexeme in question which can be pointed out, one can formulate a thesis about a progressive process of taboo removal.
