Opis:: In laboratory tests, the influence of allelopathic substances present in the soil under Lolium perenne on seed germination and its initial growth and development as well as that of Phleum pratense and Poa pratensis, was evaluated. Results of bioassays point that water extracts from the soil under Lolium perenne sward inhibited the germination of seeds of tested grass species as well as clearly modified their initial growth and development. Negative influence of water extracts from under Lolium perenne sward can be the proof of allelopathic properties of this species.

Opis:: Low percentage of Lolium perenne on phytosociological releves of plant communities of Molinio-Arrhenatheretea, orders Molinietalia (1.0%) and Arrhenatheretalia (12.4%) and high in Plantaginetalia maioris (75.0%) was found due to studies performed. The highest percentage of Lolium perenne was observed on phytosociological releves of Lolio-Cynosuretum pasture community (78.3%) and treaded Lolio-Plantaginetum (75.0% ), but only 10.1 % in cut-pasture community of Poa pratensis + Festuca rubra in Wieprz river basin. Set of tall grasses Arrhenatheretum medioeuropeum was characterized with significant percentage of Lolium perenne (27 .5%). In total, only 9.2% of Lolium perenne, 62.3% of Festuca rubra and 78.7% of Poa pratensis percentage was found on phytosociological releves of plant communities from three discussed orders of Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class.

Opis:: The grazing studies were conducted in two experiments established in 1996 and located on peat-muck soil. A randomised block design with four replications was used. The investigations with two sward types in every trial aimed to compare the maintenance of Lolium perenne and Poa pratensis in the pasture under postboggy habitat. The mentioned species were the main grass components in grass-clover mixtures, fertilized with 40 kg ha⁻¹ N and also in grass mixtures, fertilised with 40, 80 and 120 kg ha⁻¹ N. Seven cultivars or Trifolium repens were included to grass mixtures. As the white clover cultivar was never significant then the results from the seven grass-clover treatments were pooled in the data presentation. The pasture swards were grazed rotationally with Limousine cattle four times a grazing season. Samples of the herbage were analysed for the botanical composition by manual separation and expressed on a weight basis. Lolium perenne grew well in postboggy habitat and became rapidly predominant species in grass and grass-clover sward. Low resistance to frost in December and January in 1996 to 1997 was the most important reason of Lolium perenne content variation in the pasture sward. However, during the vegetative season of 1997 proceeded good regeneration of this species. Development of Poa pratensis in the sward also depended on climatic conditions. High rainfalls in late autumn of 1996 and 1997 influenced negatively stability of this specics in the grass community. Presence of Trifolium repens in the pasture sward affected beneficially the wintering of Lolium perenne and favoured the expansion of Poo pratensis.

Opis:: Drought is the main environmental factor hampering world agriculture production. In the face of warmingclimate and reduced fresh water resources it become obvious that search for any factors decreasing water useis strongly recommended. Turf grasses able to withstand drought period longer could be recommended for turfareas as parks, lawns, home gardens etc. and relatively lower amounts of water should ensure satisfactory turfquality. Therefore, twelve turf varieties from three major cool-season turf grass species: perennial ryegrass(Lolium perenne L.), Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and red fescue (Festuca rubra L.) were tested inglasshouse pot experiment and in the laboratory for determination of their relative ability to withstand greenlonger in the face of water deficit.The different response of the examined forms to drought was noted. Conditions that favor fast water depletionwere the most suitable for the expression of water deficit-related traits. Therefore, sandy mixture of 16%volumetric moisture content at field water capacity was mostly suitable for observation of the variation oftested forms. Turf condition of Kentucky bluegrass, as contrary to red fescue, was strongly connected with thesoil moisture. Different manifestation of drought resistance was observed in tested species. Kentucky bluegrass,as rather no resistant to drought, exposed low level of drought avoidance. Red fescue was able to survivedrought mainly due to leaf blades resistant to desiccation. In perennial ryegrass some other mechanismsevolved to survive drought. Early leaf wilting and senescence contributes to nutrient remobilization duringdrought and avoids large water loses during the transpiration. Therefore, perennial ryegrass turf was able toregenerate better after drought, as compared to the other tested grass species.Search for new turf forms should focus on searching for ability to maintain acceptable conditions longer ina presence of increasing water deficit. It will then reduce the duration of period of poor turf conditions andfurther, turf water demands.

Opis:: The ergot (Claviceps purpurea) incidence in seed samples of Poa pratensis, Lolium perenne, L. multiflorum, Festuca rubra and F. pratensis cultivars originating from different regions of grass cultivation in Poland was detected in 1999 – 2002. Each year, about hundred twenty cultivars of different species were tested. It was found that number of seed replaced by sclerotia significantly varied and depended on the year of seed harvest, species and cultivar tested and region of grass grown for seed. The highest level of Claviceps purpurea sclerotia almost for all grass species was detected in 1999. The highest number of seed replaced by sclerotia was found in sowing material of Poa pratensis for all years of testing. Ergot in seed lots of L. multiflorum and F. pratensis were detected at trace levels. Differences in susceptibility to Claviceps purpurea among cultivars were observed. However, significant variation in occurrence of ergot sclerotia were noted for the same cultivar harvested in different region of Poland. It was found that size of sclerotia depended on the host - grass species and the year of seed harvest. Significant differences were noted particularly in the length and weight of sclerotia.
