Opis:: The present paper focuses on the two works of Plato’s first tetralogyso as to bring out and generally characterize the Socratic dimensionof Plato’s philosophizing. It is common knowledge that Socrates’ trialand defense inspired Plato to engage in dialogical writing which culminatedin the famous logoi Sokratikoi. The article deals with the followingissues: 1. Philosophy as a ‘care for the soul’ in the Apology; 2. “The unexaminedlife is not worth living for a human being” (Ap. 38a); 3. Philosophyas a service to the god in the Euthyphro; 4. Socrates’ elenchos;5. Plato’s logoi Sokratikoi. While the issues are lively debated in thesubject literature, the present paper makes references to several importantstudies and to the broader account of Plato’s philosophy that is to befound in Erler 2006 and Erler 2007.

Opis:: The article deals with several issues related to the concept of happiness that emerge from Plato’s triptych: the Gorgias, the Republic and the Laws. The focus is on (1) the question of the alleged overcoming of the eudaimonistic imperative, i.e., natural human pursuit of happiness, in the didactic message of the Republic; (2) the question of to what extent the path of cognition ending in the contemplation of the perfect being is at the same time a strive for the supreme happiness; (3) the dilemma of choosing between a reductive and a cumulative model of complete satisfaction in human life; and finally (4) the problem of affiliative conditions of full life satisfaction.

Opis:: The paper presents Lewis Campbell (1830–1908), his research on Plato, and the collection of letters sent to this Scottish scholar by: James Martineau (1805–1900), William Hepworth Thompson (1810–1886), Paul Shorey (1857–1934), Wincenty Lutosławski (1863–1954), Eduard Gottlob Zeller (1814–1908), Franz Susemihl (1826–1901), and Theodor Gomperz (1832–1912). This collection supplements the knowledge of the research on Plato’s dialogues at the turn of the 20th century, since Plato scholars in their letters touched on the issues relating to the methods and results of the research on the chronology of Plato’s dialogues. They made judgements concerning the works of other academics, they sent to each other their own publications, and reported on the progress of their studies. They also did not shy away from making personal remarks and communicating personal reflections.
Artykuł prezentuje postać Lewisa Campbella (1830–1908) i jego badania nad Platonem, a także korespondencję do tego szkockiego uczonego, której nadawcami byli: James Martineau (1805–1900), William Hepworth Thompson (1810–1886), Paul Shorey (1857–1934), Wincenty Lutosławski (1863–1954), Eduard Gottlob Zeller (1814–1908), Franz Susemihl (1826–1901), Theodor Gomperz (1832–1912). Korespondencja ta stanowi uzupełnienie wiedzy o badaniach nad dialogami Platona na przełomie XIX i XX w. Badacze Platona poruszali w niej bowiem problemy związane z metodami i wynikami badań nad chronologią dialogów Platona, wypowiadali oceny dotyczące publikacji innych autorów, przesyłali sobie własne prace i relacjonowali postępy badań. Nie unikali także uwag personalnych i refleksji osobistych.

Opis:: The paper is a penetrating analysis of the character and function of the eschatological myth. Plato crowns his three dialogues: Gorgias, Phaedo, and Republic with various images of this myth. The theoretical basis for this analysis is L. Brisson’s Introduction à la philosophie du mythe, vol. I: Sauver les mythes (Paris: Vrin, 2005) and his solutions on the meaning and function of myth in Plato’s discourse. We assume that Plato understood myth as a discourse on the kind of reality that cannot be verified. Despite that the myth can be true, inasmuch as it is compatible with logical argument, concerning forms knowable by reason or the senses. Therefore, in all three dialogues the eschatological myth is subjected to an analysis in its strict relation to its preceding logical argument and functional concurrence has always been found between them. Despite the variety of images in the three representations of the myth, the same symbolical function has been found. They illustrate the interpenetrating cosmic, moral, and social orders based on the pillars of justice.
