Opis:: The paper presents variability in morphological traits of trees in mature Scots pine stands exposed to wind. The analysed parameters included breast height diameter, tree height and length, diameter, lateral area and crown base area. Except for the crown base area and crown diameter, values of the other traits increased with an increase in the distance from the edge of the stand. Crown diameter in trees with average exposure to wind was smaller than diameters of trees growing on the edge of the stand (strong exposure) and within the stand (weak exposure).

Opis:: The aim of the study was to determine the effect of selected tree stability indices described by individual biometric characteristics on the formation of their wind resistance. The analysis of tree stability was based on easily measurable tree traits, such as height, breast height diameter, crown parameters as well as the centre of gravity and slenderness factor. Investigations were conducted in wind−damaged Scots pine stands, where a total of over 600 trees were measured, of which almost 40% specimens were wind−broken. Results indicate that a significant role in the modification of tree stability is played by the slenderness factor, the location of the centre of gravity and crown parameters. Most of the analysed traits are strongly cross−correlated. However, these are slenderness and crown length that describe tree stability the best.

Opis:: Paper analyses relationships between radial growth and seven crown−related parameters (crown length, relative length, width, slenderness, projection area and volume as well as single tree space) for ten alien and native tree species growing in 'common garden' conditions in the WULS−SGGW Forest Experimental Station in Rogów (central Poland). Significant correlation was found between 10− and 15−years mean tree−ring width and all analysed crown parameters as well as single tree space for Abies grandis, Abies nordmanniana and, except for crown length and its relative length, for Pinus sylvestris. No relationship was observed between radial increment of Larix decidua, Pseudotsuga menziesii and Quercus rubra and any of analysed crown parameters.

Opis:: The aim of this study was to determine relationships between selected properties of juvenile wood and characteristics of the stem and crown of Scots pine. Analyses were conducted in northern Poland in eight mature pine monocultures. Nine trees were selected in each experimental site and their stems were divided into five sections. The centers of the sections were established at a height of 1.3 m from the tree base and at points corresponding to 20, 40, 60 and 80% tree height. Samples were taken from these locations, and these samples were prepared for analyses of basic density, compressive strength along the grain and static bending, as well as the modulus of elasticity during bending. The mean height of the investigated group of trees was 26.0 m with an average diameter breast high of 33.6 cm. The mean crown depth was 7.8 m and crown diameter was 3.6 m, and the mean basic density (Qu) of juvenile pine wood was 416 kg/m3. The average compressive strength along the grain (CS) was determined to be 22.3 MPa, while static bending strength (BS) was 45.8 MPa. The recorded modulus of elasticity (MOE) was 4726 MPa. Both in general terms and when dividing stems into sections, the wood properties correlated with tree characteristics to various degrees. All indexes were negative indicating that trees of greater dimensions produce juvenile wood of inferior quality. Properties of juvenile wood formed during various periods of tree life were mostly related to diameter breast high and crown depth. They were also correlated with tree height, but only to a limited extent. In contrast, properties of wood from the middle stem sections were significantly correlated with crown diameter.
