Opis:
In the paper the authors compare the growth of plantations established with 1−year−old container−raised small root−ball and bare−rooted pine seedlings. The planting dates were: late summer, early spring, late autumn and spring. The experiment results showed that irrespective of the type of seedlings used the growth of plantations originated from the summer and autumn planting was not inferior to those established in spring. The percentage of root−ball seedlings was higher. After two years they showed better height growth than the bare−root seedlings however the effect depended on planting date. The obtained results proved sufficient to begin experimental planting on a large commercial scale. The establishment of plantations in summer and autumn can make the seedling storage unnecessary and reduce nursery production costs.

The paper evaluates seedling performance in a forest culture five years after its establishment. Three pre−winter and one spring planting dates have been tested using root−balls and bare−roots seedlings. Both types of seedlings planted before winter showed the same quality, while the quality of seedlings with root−ball planted in spring was higher. Seedlings with root−ball were not affected by the time of planting. Differences between root−ball and bare root seedlings planted in spring increased throughout the entire five−year test period.

Opis:
The paper provides a description and analysis of the provenance experiment established in Zielonka Experimental Forest District. The greatest productivity was found for Scots pine from the Milicz Forest District known in literature as Kubryk provenance followed by the local population from Stęszewko. The poorest productivity revealed pine from Nowy Targ. The observed differences amounting to 120 m3·ha–1 are statistically and economically significant. Negative correlation of taxation parameters with east longitude has been ascertained. The regularity that local provenances occupy high−ranking position in provenance test results has also been proven. A high rank of the local provenance when compared to known provenances showing high plasticity and productivity (Miłomłyn, Prószków and Milicz) allows to state that the pine selection programme for Zielonka and other neighbour Forest Districts should be based on local resources.

The paper reports on the results of the provenance experiment with Pinus sylvestris L. of the SP IUFRO 1982 series. The analysis comprised taxation parameters, specifically productivity. Polish populations appeared to be superior ones. Northern and southern provenances were found to represent an inferior quality of the analysed parameters. The dependence of traits on latitude of origin can be described by parabolic equations. Southern populations show poorer adaptation to the Supraśl environmental conditions than the northern ones.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to compare growth and survival of plug and bare−root seedlings planted at different dates. The experiment was established in 2003 in the Oleśnica Forest District (south−western Poland). Seedlings were planted at four dates: the end of August, September and October 2003 and the beginning of April 2004. The two−factorial experiment comprised eight treatments. It was established in the randomized complete block design in five replications. In each plot a total of 390 seedlings were planted. The objects were measured in the years 2004−2008 and 2013. At first height of all trees was measured using a scaled rod. In 2013 diameter at breast height was measured on all trees and height was measured for some randomly selected individuals. The ANOVA was supplemented with with Tukey's multiple comparison test. The height and diameter distributions in analysed variants were compared with Kolmogorov−Smirnov test. Treatments were found rather not to vary in terms of their survival rates (fig. 1). No variation was found for mean diameters at breast height (tab. 1). The difference between the treatment with the maximum (August planting, bare−root seedlings) and minimum (April planting, bare−root seedlings) tree height equaled 69 cm. No significant differences were recorded between mean heights of trees planted in August, September and October regarding the planting material type. Variation in basal area results both from survival rates and diameter at breast height. Only spring planting of bare−root seedlings was found significantly different from all other variants (tab. 1). Differences in height between the control and the mean for the experiment increased continuously (fig. 4). Scots pine seedlings may be successfully planted in late summer and autumn. Under relatively advantageous conditions, particularly moisture levels, 1 year old bare−root pine seedlings are not inferior to plug seedlings. Plug seedlings tolerate soil drought conditions better than bare−root seedlings. The effect of stress connected with drought after planting, measured by mean height, rather than disappearing, is continuously increasing with age.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the practical feasibility of two forest regeneration methods using Scots pine Pinus sylvestris L. To this end, comparative experiments were established in the Złotoryja and Legnica Forest Districts. The site in Złotoryja had been clear cut, while the experimental plot in Legnica was established at a location damaged by wind in 2009 and cleared from wind throws and wind-broken trees before the experiment. Four different dates for sowing and two for planting were chosen in order to investigate the potential forest regeneration with respect to time. Both experiments were established according to the same design: a complete random block design with five replication blocks. To each plot we applied approximately 53 g (1.2 kg/ha) of seeds and planted 230 seedlings (10 200 seedlings/ha). In 2017, the height of the pine trees was recorded and their increment in height was measured in 2016 as well as 2017. A preliminary analysis of results was conducted using ANOVA for multiple experiments in order to identify significant differences and to then combine variables to form homogeneous groups to which the Duncan multiple range test could be applied. For growth traits, the ANOVA showed significant differences between experimental sights as well as a significant interaction of factors with the experimental site. In terms of planting, April was the most advantageous resulting in the greatest tree height in both forest districts, while in the Legnica Forest District the saplings planted in April also showed the greatest annual increments. Among the sowing dates, the most advantageous was the winter sowing, while the April sowing date produced the least desirable results. In conclusion, both sowing and planting are effective methods to establish pine cultures in coniferous forest. Furthermore, both methods may be performed at the currently recommended spring date, but they may also be postponed to summer and winter dates provided favorable weather conditions prevail.

Opis:
The experiment area was located in the territory of the Góra Śląska Forest District (western Poland). The plantation was established in 2000 on former agricultural land. One− and two−year−old Scots pine seedlings were used in the experiment. The planting methods applied included wedge planting with a traditional forest and Huff’s dibblers, a garden planting spade, a ‘Junack’ spade and three types of planting machines. Measurements were taken in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2008. Differences in the growth characteristics of plantations and young stands are not only statistically significant, but also of great practical importance. The operation of planting machines was significantly more effective, which was manifested in a higher survival rate, height growth, and larger breast height diameters and total basal area. Huff’s dibbler fell short of expectations as a hand tool.

Grey alder (Alnus incana Moench.) in Poland is a recommended species for dry and oligotrophic habitat improvement and land reclamation. In Poland these issues have not been thoroughly investigated. The field experiment with Scots pine and grey alder in the mixed plantation was carried out on the fire−burnt area in the Potrzebowice Forest District. The proportion of grey alder in the species composition of plantations notably improved the growth of pine, but only with a 50−75% share of alder. This created some disturbances in the tending of plantations. The impact of pine on alder was negative.

Opis:
Provenance trials with forest trees provide valuable information about growth and adaptability of populations often transferred over large geographical and climatic distances. In this study we evaluated growth and survival of 19 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) populations representing most of the natural range of the species in Europe, growing in a 30-year-old provenance trial in the northeastern Poland. We used cluster analysis to investigate differentiation among those populations in growth and survival. We also used published data on needle morphology and allozyme and DNA marker variation for those same populations to compare groupings of populations based on growth and needle traits and markers. We found significant variation among tested populations in all investigated traits – the largest variation was found for stand volume which integrates information on growth and survival. Variation in growth traits was related to the latitude of population origin with populations from the latitudinal band between 49° N and 54° N showing the best performance. Populations originating from both north and south off of that region showed lower productivity, which for southern provenances resulted from their particularly low survival, reflecting the lack of adaptation to the environment of the research site. Grouping of populations based on growth traits revealed three clusters corresponding to the three latitudinal regions – northern, central and southern. Needle morphological traits were not appropriate as markers of productivity. Clustering of populations based on needle morphology, and especially based on biochemical and molecular markers, did not correspond to the grouping based on growth traits.

The experiment was established in the Potrzebowice Forest District in the area after the fire of pine forest. The planting was performed in April 1994, using 2/0 pine and alder seedlings in a different proportion: 0%, 25%, 50% and 100%. The seedlings were arranged in six complete blocks. A mixture planting of single trees and row of trees was applied. The soil was prepared in furrows without subsoiling (deep tilling). Preliminary results indicate the beneficial effect of alder on the size of breast height diameters of pine already with a 25% participation of this species. No effect on pine height was observed.
