Opis:
In July 2002, the very strong hurricane appeared in northern Poland, which caused destruction of forest cover of area more than 10,000 ha. The permanent thinning research plot in a 53-year-old pine stand located in Myszyniec forest district (150 km north of Warsaw) was lying on the edge of damaged area. The following treatments were tested on this plot: 1) control plot (without thinning); 2) schematic cut in 20-year-old stand, selective thinning to 40 years, then thinning from below; 3) schematic cut in 20-year-old stand, then selective thinning; 4) selective thinning in young stand (20–40 years), then thinning from below and 5) selective thinning all the time. A significant part of this plot was completely destroyed and in the other part of the plot, some trees survived. A small part of the plot resisted the wind attack. An analysis of the amount of destroyed trees (measured by basal area) showed no differences between particular silvicultural treatments. The level of damage differed between particular parts of the plot. Another plot located in Ostrów Mazowiecka forest district (100 km NE of Warsaw) with the same thinning treatments was touched by heavy wind in July 2011 when the stand was 62 years old. Unlike the hurricane of 2002, this storm did not destroy the experimental plot which was located outside the zone of heaviest calamity. Therefore, damage on this plot had point and group character. Although on particular measurement units, share of broken or fallen trees did not exceed 10% of total basal area, it can be observed that the lowest level of damage was noticed on plots with selective thinning in young age and thinning from below in older stand.

Opis:
The research aim was to evaluate the influence of different thinning methods on future crop tree growth. Investigations were conducted on permanent Scots-pine experimental plots, established in 1960s and 1970s in Kozienice, Łąck, Parciaki and Janów Lubelski Forest Districts. To assess the response to thinning of future crop trees, their dominance coefficients were used. These are defined as quotients for each given future crop tree diameter and average stand diameter (WP1), the average dominant layer diameter (WP2) and the average diameter of 100 thickest trees per hectare (WP3). The difference between each coefficient value at the beginning and at the end of the measurement period was used as a measure of the thinning effect. On Kozienice, Łąck and Parciaki plots the differences between treatments were significant, especially in the period after first thinning. The increase of WP3 coefficient occurred in a case of strong thinning – TS1 and TS2. On plot Parciaki also the moderate thinning TU1 and TU2 had a significant influence on change of this coefficient. On plot Janów Lubelski the influence of treatment has not been stated in the first 5-year period but in the next one. Analyses of changes in the dominance coefficients confirmed the hypothesis that the WP3 coefficient is very useful as it is the most stable indicator of future crop-tree position in a stand. On Kozienice, Łąck and Parciaki plots the significant differences between treatments were stated, especially in the period after first thinning. The influence of thinning treatment on the plot Janów Lubelski was not considered for the first 5-year period but in the next one. All reactions to thinning were slower on this plot, possibly because of the relatively poor site conditions. This was a longterm effect. The results obtained suggest that very intense thinning of Scots pine stands should only be implemented under a restricted set of conditions – in healthy, not neglected, forest stands. Classical moderately-selective thinning is preferable to intense thinning and is the most convenient option for pine stands.

Opis:
The paper describes a case study of thinning experiment established in 1976 with a use of random block design in 21−year−old Scots pine stand in Janów Lubelski Forest District (south−eastern Poland). The stand was subjected to no thinning (control variant K), weak thinning with removal of 10% of basal area (variant S1), strong thinning with removal of 30% of basal area (variant S3) and extreme thinning, where only future crop trees and some reserve trees were left (variant TE). S1 and S3 treatments were repeated each 5 years, while in TE treatment the 20−year interval was applied. During the period of 40 years all trees were measured each 5 years and current basal area increment was calculated for the whole stand and for future crop trees population. The relative increment of future crop trees population calculated as a percentage of stand total increment was taken into account too. Data were subjected to ANOVA and differences were compared with Tukey test. The results showed that total stand increment was not influenced by thinning intensity. The future crop trees increment was significantly higher in a case of extreme thinning in comparison to weak thinning and to the control treatment during the first 20 years of experiment (age 21−41). During the second 20 years (age 41−61) only relative basal area increment of future crop trees population was significantly higher on the plots with extreme thinning in comparison to other treatments. The results suggest that a weak thinning brings no silvicultural effect meant as increased growth of previously selected future crop Scots pines. Strong or very strong thinnings give a long−term growth effect and they can be acceptable, but in healthy and well−tended young pine stands only.

Opis:
One of the main tasks for the forest managers is to form the highly productive stands, and it is mainly performed by applying intermediate cuttings during the stand development. As the impact of thinning on the premature Scots pine, commercially most important species in Lithuania, has not been sufficiently investigated yet, our objective was to evaluate the impact of such treatments on the growth and yield of the pine stands by using data from the long term experimental plots. The described thinning experiment was established in 1983 in Kazlu˛ Ru−da (54.760395°N, 23.517736°E), in the 30−years−old Scots pine forest, growing in oligotrophic site conditions. Four square plots with the size of 0.25 ha each were set. The first one (5) was left as a control variant with no thinning, while the others were subjected to the treatments of different intensity. In variant 5A (slightly thinned) 15% of the basal area compared to the control plot was removed. Accordingly, in variant 5B (moderate thinning) 25% and in variant 5C (heavy thinning) 40% of basal area was subtracted. No additional thinning was implemented further during the experiment. Plots were re−measured at least 4 times with the last measurement in 2016, when the stand was 63 years old. The main result of this study was that after the 33 years no evident effect of various intensity of silvicultural treatments can be seen as the growth and yield of the un−thinned forest stand was the highest compared to the thinned ones. Growth and yield in the most intensely thinned stand reached 86 and 85% compared to the control variant, respectively. The best productive results were found for moderate thinning (92 and 89% of growth and yield of the un−thinned stand), while the worst – in the slightly thinned 5A variant (77 and 83% of values for the control stand). Further on, the number of trees and competition level in all plots were very different when the experiment was established. Yet after 33 years, these differences were remarkably reduced. Accordingly, the diameter distributions, being very different at the beginning of the experiment, eventually became very similar in all experimental plots. Finally, the results showed that in un− −thinned forest stand, natural mortality (self−thinning) of trees adjusted its density just in time. Thus this stand managed to keep its growing energy in later periods, avoiding degradation or destruction predicted by some theories.
