Opis:
The paper is an attempt to determine the testing standard of root growth potential of European tree species: pine, spruce and larch. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse during the dormancy season (February−March). The experimental variants consisted of two methods of seedling storage: the cold store and traditional storage pit. The obtained results revealed that the tested species had poor root growth capacity when compared to Burdett scale and their response range is between 0 and 3. It was noted that the storage method stimulates root production. As a rule the seedlings stored in the pit had higher root growth response than those stored in the cold store.

Opis:
Pinus sylvestris L. seedlings grown for 12-17 months in pure culture after inoculation with S and P strains of Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. were studied with the help of light and transmission electron microscopy. Standardized inoculation procedure and uniform in vitro conditions allowed evaluation of the host/pathogen interactions. Necrotic reaction of the bark cells associated with the accumulation of dark-stained material in vacuoles, and lignification of their walls in root regions in proximity to mycelium were the common host reaction. Hypertrophy of the bark cells in areas invaded by hyphae caused a tension that was responsible for strong deformation of the bark cells. Injury to the vascular cambium resulted in formation of barrier zone parenchyma and abnormal xylem elements. High amount of polyphenolic material accumulated in new formed parenchyma cells was an effective chemical “barrier” to the centripetal spread of hyphae. Resin-plugged tracheids and row parenchyma cells rich in polyphenolic material were common in wood areas colonized by the fungus.

Opis:
The research was carried out in 2006 within the area of forest nursery in Okalewo, the Forest Inspectorate Skrwilno (Central Poland, at 53º02´N, 19º23´E). The aim of the study was to determine the effects of root pruning in one-year Scots pine seedlings (Pinus sylvestris L.) on their growth after transplanting. The vertical roots of one-year Scots pine seedlings were pruned to the length of 5, 10, 15 i 20 cm and measured. The scope of measurements included: stem length and thickness, total root length, root length within thickness classes, surface root area, root volume as well as the number of root tips and ramifications. The measurements of root systems were performed with the use of a scanner and WinRhizo software. The seedlings were transplanted and were growing in the nursery all through the vegetation season 2006. In October of this year the seedlings were lifted from the ground and measured again at the same scope. Reiterated measurements allowed evaluation of increment characteristics after transplanting. The results indicated negative impacts of intensive root pruning before transplantation on seedling survival rates. Severe pruning of seedling vertical roots had negative effects on increment gained by both above- and underground seedling parts. Pruning roots to 5 cm of length significantly decreased pine seedling survival rate of. On the other hand, 20 cm long roots have no significant effects on seedling survival and increment but they can cause difficulties in seedling nursery cultivation.

Opis:
Prepenetration and penetration phenomena after inoculation of roots of Pinus sylvestris seedlings grown in vitro with the P-, S- and F-group isolates of Heterobasidion annosum were observed using scanning electron microscop. There were no differences in the behaviour of hyphae and in the appearence of mycelia formed by the three IS-group isolates. Four types of the root penetration by hyphae were observed. In the first, the entrace of hypha into root was achieved throught tiny pore formed in walls of the cortical cells. In the second, swellings resembling appressoria were formed by the hyphal tips at the points of contact with the root surface. In the third, the hyphae penetrated cells through holes in eroded areas of roots, and in the fourth by the natural crevices at points of the cortical cell junctions. It is concluded that the different frequencies of the four types of penetration observed after inoculation with isolates of the three IS group should be carefully explained in term of their different pathogenic and saprobic capabilities on pine.

Opis:
The paper presents research on influence of nursery soil compaction, composed of peat (90%) and perlite (10%), on the growth of seedlings of Pinus sylvestris grown in containers. Polyethylene nursery are containers used for the seedling production. These containers were filled with three different densities of the peat and perlite substrate (0.3, 0.5 and 0.7 g·cm-3). During the experiment, nursery containers were initially placed in a plastic tent for a period of two months, and then for three months further months in an open nursery field. Growth measurements for individual plants were the length of shoots and the root system, root collar diameter, root and shoot dry weight and photosynthetic rate. There was a relationship between the extent of compaction of the soil substrate and all analyzed growth parameters of seedlings. A more compact substrate adversely affected on the number of grown seedlings and their length but positively influenced the dry mass of pine seedlings.

Opis:
In the paper the authors compare the growth of plantations established with 1−year−old container−raised small root−ball and bare−rooted pine seedlings. The planting dates were: late summer, early spring, late autumn and spring. The experiment results showed that irrespective of the type of seedlings used the growth of plantations originated from the summer and autumn planting was not inferior to those established in spring. The percentage of root−ball seedlings was higher. After two years they showed better height growth than the bare−root seedlings however the effect depended on planting date. The obtained results proved sufficient to begin experimental planting on a large commercial scale. The establishment of plantations in summer and autumn can make the seedling storage unnecessary and reduce nursery production costs.

Opis:
This paper presents results on the restoration of Scots pine stands established on post-agricultural lands undergoing conversion into mixed stands. Sessile oak (Quercus petraea), common beech (Fagus sylvatica) and small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) seedlings were planted in artificially created gaps (0,02 ha to 0,05 ha each) cut in six experimental plots (Forest Districts: Bielsk, Krynki, Sobibór, Dobieszyn, Skrwilno and Łupawa) located in 20–25-years-old pine stands. The experimental plots were spread across northern, central and eastern Poland and affected by root-rot fungus (Heterobasidion annosum). Nine years after planting, the number of individual trees and shrub species, their height sum and average height were calculated for fenced artificial gaps (LSO) as well as non-fenced artificial gaps (LSN) and compared to natural gaps (LN) and non-disturbed neighboring stands (D). Results were calculated separately for the planted species (oak, lime and beech) but combined for all other species. The results indicate satisfactory restoration in all of the investigated plots except in Krynki, which is located in a relatively poor site. Significant differences appeared between height sum as well as average height of planted species in fenced compared to non-fenced gaps. Furthermore, in both, natural and artificial gaps, the species composition of the young generation was enriched with natural regeneration of pioneer species, mainly silver birch (Betula pendula), rowan (Sorbus aucuparia) and aspen (Populus tremula).

Opis:
The effects of pine and oak forest litter on mycorrhizal status of 2−year−old Pinus sylvestris L. seedlings grown in a bare−root nursery was investigated. The research was carried out in the nursery of Vilnius University Botanical Garden in Lithuania. Ectomycorrhizal communities were assessed by a combination of morphological and molecular techniques. Statistical analysis revealed significant effect of litter treatment on some growth parameters of seedlings: seedling height, needle dry weight and total seedling weight. The survival rate of seedlings was significantly highest for oak litter, intermediate for pine litter, and lowest for control soil. Pine seedlings were colonized by indigenous ecto− and ectendomycorrhizal symbionts. Seven mycorrhizal species (Suillus luteus, S. variegatus, Wilcoxina mikolae, Tuber sp., Tomentella sp., Cenococcum geophilum, Amphinema byssoides) were distinguished on the roots of pine seedlings as well as one ectomycorrhizal symbiont not identified to species level. In total, 6 mycorrhizal types were found in control soil, 5 in pine litter, and 8 in oak litter. Suilloid (S. luteus and S. variegatus) and Wilcoxina mycorrhizae were dominant on tested seedlings, irrespective of litter addition. Seedlings grown in untreated nursery soil were 34% colonized by W. mikolae, while suilloid mycorrhizae were dominant after litter treatment (81% in pine litter and 63% in oak litter). We may conclude that suilloid mycorrhizae are better adapted to the conditions related to litter addition than W. mikolae.
